2024-2025 Ohio State Basketball

2024-25 roster as of today
my top 6 who could be possible starters*

Mobley
Johnson* SG
Thornton* PG
Chatman -inj
Bradshaw* C
Parrish* SF
Bauhmann
Mahaffey
Stewart* PF
Nash
White
Royal* SF/PF
Etzler
Parks

Very guard-heavy.
Still a product of Holtmann and I hope the Diebler looks to begin changing that as he goes. Bringing in Bradshaw and Stewart could be the start of that but Felix leaving late hurt. It could be nice to see Etzler and Parks give some meaningful minutes but I won't hold my breathe.

Little recruiting news. Just spoke with Darryn Petersons Mom who is not a sports fan at all. She really doesn’t care about where he goes to school, the reason Darryn left Ohio is because teams like Huntington Prep are paying kids in NIL to go play there.

Have heard some interesting comments this week regarding strength/conditioning practices during the Holtmann era that makes me wonder if that particular facet of the program was a major Achilles heel factor in their yearly losing skids in January. Along the lines of being “dead” or “heavy” legged and less twitchy/bouncy due to the weight lifting philosophy.

I’m curious to see there are any noticeable strength/conditioning changes in the Diebler era.

Added a grad transfer via portal in Ques Glover…sat out last year at Kansas State with a knee injury. Looks to be the one year patch for losing Chatman for the year.

Had two very productive years at Samford averaging 19.2 ppg in 2021-22 and 14.7 ppg in 2022-23.

That is interesting. There is probably some truth to it.

My son's college baseball coach was a maniac for strength training and conditioning. Running up hills carry teammates, sprints carrying cinder blocks, crazy stuff. Then he wondered why the pitchers lost a few mph on their fastball and the team ran out of gas. I asked him once "You realize this is baseball, right?" He was not appreciative of my thoughts. My son always was a way better pitcher in the summer leagues when properly rested.

Nice offensive skillset between passing ability and legitimately being able to stretch the floor some.

Sneaking suspicion that like a lot of these foreign big guys he probably needs to get a lot stronger. Hopefully adds competent depth for this year but probably more of a 2nd/3rd year to play regularly.

A little of what I read said the leagues he was playing in was made up of kids as young as 16 years old. And seeing his stats the highlight video must have included every 3pt shot he made because they only list 5 makes. I feel this player is a project for the future. One thing is certain, you cannot teach 7 foot. But I wish we could have kept Felix.

Diebler picks up another 2026 commit today with Upper Arlington’s Alex Smith. Kid seems to have grown some in the spring/summer and appears to be 6’8 possibly closer to 6’9 going into his junior year.

Have seen some summer stuff between playing for Midwest in AAU and for UA at team camps. Legitimate floor spacer as a shooter and does have ability to score off the bounce. Probably a stretch 4 and maybe could play some as a 3 in college.

Other offers from Indiana, UC, Xavier, and Nebraska.

Not a difference maker.

I am a huge fan of adding lengthy shooters.

If this kid is legitimately 6’9 he’s going to rocket up the recruiting rankings when the sites update and expand the rankings later in the fall/early in the winter. Probably high 3 star/low 4 star.

Not everyone is a 15-20 ppg scorer.

Seems to fit a very clearly defined role that IMO increasingly matters. Good teams have taller guys that can shoot and space the floor for your guys that can get at the rim.
I agree, but I’m hoping for Diebler to land a program changer at some point. I am excited about Mobley, but I want more.

Well, they did have such a guy on an official visit this weekend.

Unfortunately, I’d think that kid would be a lock to Kansas due to his Adidas NIL deal, assuming he goes to school for a year and doesn’t just jump to the G-League.

It would take a miracle IMO to get Peterson in the scarlet and gray for a year.

You know that how? Watching video on him he can finish inside with contact and appears to be a good 3 pt. shooter. Prep Hoops has him ranked as no.3 in the 26 class in Ohio ahead of TJ Crumble so he must have a good skill set to be ranked that high. Go Bucks!!!

Where were Etzler, Parks and Hardman ranked in Ohio?

Don't know and don't care not every 5 * plays like a 5* and some 3* play like 5*. But if he did not have a good skill set, I doubt if prep hoops would rank him that high. Smith avg. 14.5 pts per game for a D1 HS as a soph. that is not bad. I trust Diebler's judgement on bball talent more than some yappi expert.

Parks — 5th, Etzler — anywhere from 4th to 7th, Hardman — anywhere from 12th to 18th. Hardman seemed like a nice kid and is a solid shooter, but at his (lack of) size, he had zero business being at any school above a MAC level.

Dunno where this kid ultimately ends up in the rankings, but I trust the background and skill set a lot more than those other guys. Big shooters generally translate, and it’s one of the physical/skill profiles it seems most often there are kids that “transfer up” from smaller schools to bigger schools after 1-2 years of college ball.

UA generally has a good to very good program and plays in a strong league. Developmentally, I’d trust the circuit teams for Midwest over just about anybody in terms of AAU. Seems like in their short history they’ve had a lot of dudes that didn’t have plus athletic profiles that have been very legit players in terms of skill or role fulfillment.

Smith is no string bean appears to be a physical player who can shoot the 3. Needs to work on his ball handling but put 20 - 30 lbs. on him and OSU may have a Tyler Wahl type player.

Darryn Peterson trims his list to four…Ohio State, Kansas, Kansas State, USC.
It’s nice of him to include the local-ish school but it’d be better if he just ripped that bandaid off so OSU could allocate resources on guys they actually have a chance of landing.

The KSU inclusion is interesting though.
