I'm using this thread at the 2021 Worlds thread. Here's a quick primer on the first five weights, all guys who have medaled at Worlds/age groups listed, Senior world medalists bolded.

57kg:
Khasalov, AZE- 3rd at 2021 Euros, 3rd at 2019 U23s, 2016 Junior World Champ (Fix 3rd)
Naim, BUL- 2nd at 2017 U23s
Sarlak, IRI- 3rd at 2019 U23s
Abe, JPN- 2019 Junior World Champ (beat Vito)
Erdenebat, MGL- 3rd at 2017 Worlds, 3rd at 2015 Worlds, 2012 Junior World Champ
Mutaliev, RUS- He’s Russian, just trust me
Atli, TUR- 2021 Euro Champ, 2nd at 2019 Worlds, 3rd at 2018 Worlds, 3rd at 2017 U23s, 2013 Junior World Champ

Gilman, USA- 3rd at 2021 Olympics, 2nd at 2017 Worlds, 3rd at 2014 Junior Worlds

Gilman is the only Olympic medalist this year who has chosen to compete at 57kg, as Uguev (Russia), Ravi (India), and Sanayev (Kazakhstan). Erdenebat and Atli are the only other 57kg Olympians, and the only ones who have medaled at worlds before as well. If the Olympic Thomas Gilman shows up here he is the favorite to win a World title. He looked amazing in Tokyo and will look to improve on that bronze medal.

61kg:
Harutyunyan, ARM- 3rd at 2018 Junior Worlds (Fix 3rd), 3rd at 2017 Junior Worlds (Fix 1st)
Alibegov, BRN- 3rd at 2021 Junior Worlds
Vangelov, BUL- 2nd at 2012 Junior Worlds
Lomtadze, GEO- 3rd at 2021 Euros, 2nd at 2016 Worlds
Ravinder, IND- 2nd at 2021 Junior Worlds, 2nd at 2019 U23s, 3rd at 2018 Cadet Worlds
Amouzadkhalili, IRI- 2021 Junior World Champ, 2019 Cadet World Champ, 2018 Cadet World Champ
Hasegawa, JPN- 2018 U23 Champ, 3rd at 2013 Cadet Worlds
Zholdoshbekov, KGZ- 2019 U23 Champ
Tumenbileg, MGL- 3rd at 2018 Worlds
Grigorev, POL- 3rd at 2021 Euros
Magomedov, RUS- 2021 Euro Champ, 2018 Junior World Champ, 2nd at 2015 Cadets (Fix 3rd)
Micic, SRB- 3rd at 2015 Junior Worlds

Fix, USA- 3rd at 2018 Junior Worlds, 2017 Junior World Champ, 3rd at 2016 Junior Worlds, 3rd at 2015 Cadet World

Really a battle of young and upcoming guys at this weight I think. Amouzadkhalili, Magomedov, and Ravinder are all young talents in power countries who could both medal here and be factors for the next half decade. Harutyunyan, Vangelov, and Micic are all Olympians who failed to medal and will look to improve their year. Daton Fix is looking for his first Senior level medal after failing to win a match at 2018 Worlds.

65kg:
Tevanyan, ARM- 3rd at 2018 Junior Worlds
Rahimzade, AZE- 3rd at 2021 Euros
Yazdani Cherati, IRI- 2nd at 2015 Cadet Worlds
Yamaguchi, JPN- 2019 Junior World Champ (Tagg 3rd)
Sacultan, MDA- 3rd at 2021 Euros, 3rd at 2019 U23s, 3rd at 2018 U23s
Bienkowski, POL- 2nd at 2021 Euros
Shakhiev, RUS- 2021 Euro Champ
Kilicsallayan, TUR- 2013 Junior World Champ
Shuptar, UKR- 3rd at 2015 Worlds

Diakomihalis, USA- 2016 Cadet World Champ, 2015 Cadet World Champ

What a cleared out weight. No Olympic medalists, nor do we see stalwarts like Valdes Tobier, Gadzhiev, Muszukajev, or Niyazbekov. Tevanyan and Tumur Ochir are the only Olympians, but I’m not sure either is the favorite. Yianni can most certainly win this weight, but watch out for Shakhiev of Russia, who won Euros and is competing at his first world championships here. Rutgers’ Sebastian Rivera is also registered here for Puerto Rico.

70kg:
Bayramov, AZE- 3rd at 2021 Junior Worlds (lost to O’Toole), 2019 U23 World Champ, 3rd at 2019 Junior Worlds, 2018 Cadet World Champ, 2nd at 2017 Cadet Worlds
Batirov, BRN- 2nd at 2018 Worlds, 2nd at 2003 Junior Worlds
Iakobishvili, GEO- 3rd at 2018 Worlds, 2017 World Champ
Elahi, IRI- 2021 Junior World Champ (Andonian 3rd), 2nd at 2019 Cadet Worlds
Motoyama, JPN- 2nd at 2019 Junior Worlds (lost to Carr), 3rd at 2018 U23s, 3rd at 2016 Cadet Worlds (Yanni 1st), 2nd at 2015 Cadet Worlds (Yianni 1st)
Grahmez, MDA- 3rd at 2018 Junior Worlds, 3rd at 2014 Cadet Worlds (Lee 1st)
Enkhtuya, MGL- 3rd at 2018 Junior Worlds (Deakin 2nd)
Gadzhiev, POL- 3rd at 2019 Worlds, 2nd at 2017 Worlds,2008 Junior World Champ
Kaya, TUR- 3rd at 2012 Junior Worlds

Green, USA- 2nd at 2017 Worlds, 3rd at 2015 Worlds

I think people are sleeping on this weight. Bayramov and Gadzhiev are Olympians, along with perennial 70kg contenders Iakobishvili from Georgia and Adam Batirov of Bahrain. Bayramov you might know as getting pinned by Keegan O’Toole this summer, but he’s an excellent wrestler who can challenge Green. Motoyama is very tough, Elahi was a Junior world champ this year at 70kg, Mustafa Kaya is just always in the way it seems. James Green hasn’t medaled the last two world championships but may be fresher than the other guys at this weight who have competed all summer. Either that, or he will be flat footed and get beat by one of the several talented guys here.

74kg:
Kentchadze, GEO- 2018 U23 World Champ, 2nd at 2018 Worlds, 3rd at 2017 U23s
Yash, IND- 3rd at 2021 Junior Worlds (O’Toole 1st)
Emamichoghaei, IRI- 3rd at 2019 Worlds, 3rd at 2017 U23s (McKenna 3rd), 3rd at 2017 Junior Worlds (McKee 2nd), 2nd at 2013 Cadet Worlds
Diacon, MDA- 2nd at 2019 Junior Worlds, 3rd at 2018 Junior Worlds (Berge 3rd)
Bizhoev, RUS- 3rd at 2018 U23s, 3rd at 2013 Cadet Worlds
Cabolov, SRB- 2nd at 2017 Worlds, 2014 World Champ, 2011 Junior World Champ
Salkazanov, SVK- 2021 Euro Champ, 3rd at 2019 Worlds, 2018 U23 World Champ

Dake, USA- 3rd at 2021 Olympics, 2019 World Champ, 2018 World Champ

So Kyle Dake is the best wrestler at this weight, and if he’s healthy he should win his third world championship. Kentchadze has been pretty good in the last quad, as has Emami from Iran. Bizhoev is Russia’s rep, and I don’t believe he has made a world team before, but he’s a very solid wrestler who should be a tough matchup. Mitch Finesilver (Duke) and Malik Amine (Michigan) are also competing at this weight.

On you go Yank. Primers are all yours. Appreciate it. (y)

Looking forward to brackets.

Great stuff Yankee.

79kg:
Ashirov, AZE- 2nd at 2021 Junior Worlds
Alekma, FRA- 2nd at 2021 Euros
Kentchadze, GEO- 3rd at 2021 Euros, 2018 U23s Champ,
Kougioumtsidis, GRE- 2nd at 2018 Cadet Worlds
Gourav, IND- 3rd at 2021 Junior Worlds, 2nd at 2018 Cadet Worlds (Facundo 3rd)
Nokhoditarimi, IRI- 2nd at 2019 U23s, 3rd at 2017 Cadet Worlds (Lewan 1st)
Byambasuren, MGL- 3rd at 2018 Junior Worlds (Lewis 1st)
Valiev, RUS- 3rd at 2019 U23s, 2nd at 2014 Cadet Worlds (Manville 1st)
Gulaev, SVK- 2nd at 2017 U23s

Burroughs, USA- 3rd at 2019 Worlds, 3rd at 2019 Worlds, 2017 World Champ, 2015 World Champ, 3rd at 2014 Worlds, 2013 World Champ, 2012 Olympic Champ, 2011 World Champ

Jordan Burroughs will be in search of his sixth world title, tying him with John Smith for the most by an American wrestler. His competition will mostly be unproven and untested, with U23 stars Kentchadze, Nokhoditarimi, Gulaev, and Valiev looking to dethrone the champ. Guessing Valiev is the biggest threat here, but traditional rivals of Jordan like Sidakov and Chamizo are not competing in Oslo.

86kg:
Abakarov, AZE- 2nd at 2019 U23s, 3rd at 2019 Junior Worlds, 2nd at 2018 Junior Worlds (Lewis 1st), 2016 Cadet World Champ (Carr 3rd)
Aminashvili, GEO- 3rd at 2015 Worlds
Dudarov, GER- 2nd at 2012 Junior Worlds
Yazdanicharati, IRI- 2nd at 2021 Olympics, 2019 World Champ, 3rd at 2018 Worlds, 2017 World Champ, 2016 Olympic Champ, 2nd at 2015 Worlds, 2014 Junior World Champ (Pico 2nd), 2nd at 2011 Cadet Worlds
Kalashnikov, ISR- 3rd at 2017 U23s
Ishiguro, JPN- 3rd at 2019 U23s, 2018 Junior World Champ (Brooks 2nd)
Naifonov, RUS- 3rd at 2021 Olympics, 3rd at 2019 Worlds, 2nd at 2018 U23s, 2017 Junior World Champ (Valencia 2nd)
Makoev, SVK- 2nd at 2017 Worlds
Friev, ESP- 3rd at 2018 Worlds
Gocen, TUR- 3rd at 2019 U23s, 2nd at 2016 Junior Worlds

Taylor, USA- 2021 Olympic Champ, 2018 World Champ

This bracket looks exactly like the 2021 Olympic bracket and the 2018 Worlds bracket- David Taylor is the best wrestler, Hassan Yazdani is second, and Artur Naifonov is third. Those three should medal, with the fourth coming from someone like Friev or the youngster Abakarov, who I am very high on. The Taylor-Yazdani rematch will be one of the highlights of the weekend should it occur, with both wrestlers exhibiting excellent offense and relentless pace.

92kg:
Nurmagomedov, AZE- 3rd at 2021 Euros
Mtsituri, GEO- 3rd at 2019 Worlds, 3rd at 2017 U23s
Patil, IND- 3rd at 2021 Junior Worlds (Elam 1st)
Kurbanov, RUS- 2021 Euro Champ
Yaylaci, TUR- 3rd at 2018 Junior Worlds

Cox, USA- 2019 World Champ, 2018 World Champ, 3rd at 2017 Worlds, 3rd at 2016 Olympics

Well this weight is a bunch of nothing. Healthy, primed J’Den Cox runs through all of these guys in a weight with one former medalist and (I think) zero Olympians. Kurbanov is alright from what I’ve heard, but nothing special. If J’Den doesn’t win it’s a pretty big upset.

97kg:
Randhawa, CAN- 3rd at 2015 Junior Worlds
Odikadze, GEO- 3rd at 2018 Worlds
Kadian, IND- 3rd at 2013 Junior Worlds (Snyder 1st)
Goleij, IRI- 2019 U23 Champ, 2017 U23 Champ
Nurov, MKD- 3rd at 2019 Worlds
Sadulaev, RUS- 2021 Olympic Champ, 2019 World Champ, 2018 World Champ, 2nd at 2017 Worlds, 2016 Olympic Champ, 2015 World Champ, 2014 World Champ, 2013 Cadet World Champ, 2012 Cadet World Champ

Snyder, USA- 2nd at 2021 Olympics, 3rd at 2019 Worlds, 2nd at 2018 Worlds, 2017 World Champ, 2016 Olympic Champ, 2015 World Champ, 3rd at 2014 Junior Worlds, 2013 Junior World Champ

Once again, Snyder and Sadulaev look to do battle, with Sadulaev holding the 2-1 record over Snyder. Kyle hasn’t won Worlds since 2017, after winning three straight years. Personally, I think Sadulaev is just the better wrestler and will beat Kyle again, but it was closer than expected in the Olympic finals. Yergali, Karadeniz, Hushtyn, Odikazde, and Nurov are all 2021 Olympians looking to medal here, and any of them can win bronze medals.

125kg:
Dhesi, CAN- 2014 Junior World Champ (Coon 3rd)
Hemida, EGY- 2nd at 2018 U23 Worlds
Petriashvili, GEO- 2nd at 2021 Olympics, 2019 World Champ, 2018 World Champ, 2017 U23 World Champ, 2017 World Champ, 3rd at 2016 Olympics, 3rd at 2015 Worlds, 3rd at 2013 Worlds, 2013 Junior World Champ, 3rd at 2012 Junior Worlds, 2nd at 2011 Cadet Worlds (Coon 1st)
Zare, IRI- 3rd at 2021 Olympics, 2019 U23 Champ, 2nd at 2019 Junior Worlds (Parris 1st), 1st at 2018 Cadet Worlds
Akgul, TUR- 3rd at 2021 Olympics, 2nd at 2019 Worlds, 2nd at 2017 Worlds, 2016 Olympic Champ, 2015 World Champ, 2014 World Champ, 3rd at 2013 Worlds, 2nd at 2010 Junior Worlds

Gwiazdowski, USA- 3rd at 2018 Worlds, 3rd at 2017 Worlds

The top three here are Petriashvili, Zare, and Akgul (in that order, in my opinion). No Gable Steveson for Team USA here, with 2x bronze medalist NIck Gwiazdowski returning to represent the team. Gwiz was beat pretty good by Gable earlier this year, which doesn’t give me much hope against guys like Geno and Akgul. Think the big three all medal, with maybe someone like Baran or Khizriev taking that other bronze.

Fix, Dake, Taylor all wrestle int the Semi beginning at 10:30.
Fix has been fantastic! Dake and Taylor are handling things as well.
Gwiz was beat 10-0 in the quarter. We expected a loss there.
USA!

Great morning of wrestling. The US had given up zero points until Gwiz quarter match.
And in the "way to early" team race, Team USA leads RWF (Russia by another name - they were ROC in the Olympics) 30-20 in guaranteed pts.

I'm pretty sure it's just flo. I didn't click on it during the live stream, but if you click on it now it takes you to flo.
When I click on it it takes me to the UWW site with four mats and it says, 'Will resume shortly."

What a morning for Team USA. Four wrestlers, three in the finals!

Perhaps the most impressive and surprising was Daton Fix, who put up three straight techs over Bulgaria, France, and India, without being scored against. He will face Abasgadzhi Magmoedov in the finals and has secured his first senior world medal.

Both Kyle Dake and David Taylor made the finals as well, Dake beating Moldova, Turkey, and Belarus, and Taylor beating Slovakia, France, and Azerbaijan. Taylor's win in the semis was especially impressive, using a bar + half to beat young Azeri Abakarov. Dake will have Slovakia's Salkazanov in the finals, while Taylor will get another battle against Hassan Yazdani Charati.

Nick Gwiazdowski went 1-1, beating Dhesi of Canada but losing 10-0 to Zare of Iran. Zare just beat Akgul of Turkey, so Gwiz gets pulled back and will have to beat Bulgaria and Akgul to win bronze.

Another "way too early" team race update:

Team USA 60 - 3 in finals, 1 rep, 0 eliminated
RWF 30 - 1 in finals, 1 in 3/5 match, 1 in rep, 1 eliminated
