$15 Entry Fee, $900 Tournament Fee, Play on a Soccer Field

Go Buckeyes
I've watched the craziness of high-priced tournaments in volleyball and basketball. Now softball has decided to join the crazy club.

I saw a tournament this weekend where it was $900 for a tournament fee for a 5-game guarantee. The parents were charged a $15 entry fee each day of the tournament. The worst part is the games were played on a soccer field with temporary fencing that was built for crowd control. They were waist-high fences with rails that had gaps and space below the "fence" for the ball to roll through.

But there were "college coaches" there!!!!

I was surprised when the gate fee at our tournament was $15. I thought for sure it was for all 3 days, but the lady said daily. A lot of greedy people these days. However I did see a couple college coaches there on Friday, but Saturday and Sunday none.

......but your daughter may get some financial assistance in college that will be a fraction of what you paid to be on these teams.

Greedy SOBs, no doubt about that.

it is all about the benjamins baby

"scouted' event and you see the fine print and all the means is they send box scores to college coaches...like they GAF about box scores of a stupid tournament.

This was a 12U, 14U, 16U, 18U tournament. I can't imagine too many scouts will waste their time at a 12U game. 14U and 18U won't have many scouts either. Maybe there is some benefit to playing in the 16U division but at that price, it would be better to put the money in the bank and just pay for tuition.

After adding up the cost for both teams, the tournament collected $600-$700 per game!!

D1 Super Select Summer Showcase - North Ridgeville

On their website, it said $10 entrance fee:

It still says it:

When I told the lady that the website said it was only $10, her response was "this is a TOURNAMENT!"

Oooh...SUPER Select....must be really important as it's Super.

Said it before and will say it again....you're kid is not special because they play on one of these teams.

The best ability a kid can have is their par3nts ability to write that check to be on the team....

lol you sound like you or your kid didn’t make 1 of these travel teams 😂, sound bitter.
In all honesty, I’ll be glad when she’s done with summer ball. Unless you’re at a top level tournament, the umps are about as bad as it gets. I get it, it’s hot, it’s a long day, especially a 3 team rotation for 6-7 games, but you signed up for it, so you might as well give effort and not let a coach intimidate you to change a call. Or on the opposite side, as soon as you question a call, they immediately threaten to throw you out. I witnessed both this weekend.

I believe it is impossible not to make a travel team. Someone, somewhere will take the money.

As to top-level tournaments, I'm not impressed. I wish we could go back in time and have everyone play local competitive softball and play a few late Summer tournaments. Also wish that all tournaments led to a bigger tournament that you have to qualify for. (Writing a check should not be a qualification).

There was a local all-star game a couple days ago held at Firestone Stadium with teams formed based on the county they played in. Summit County had two teams and both were very good teams. They were fun games to watch but they were still missing dozens of the top players in the area. There are plenty of talented softball players within a few miles. Traveling several hours to play in a showcase seems to be more about ego than actually working on becoming a better softball player.

It's just like everything else, money might get you there, but that doesn't mean it's (you) (are) legit.
