Ignatius is likely headed to a 1-8 season, but the St X game is unpredictable. I think the Cats could conceivably play with (and possibly beat) everyone in the region except St Eds and Medina. Very unlikely to see a playoff rematch in Week 11 if they lose out, but maybe Week 12. As a Mentor...

    Mentor Football 2023

Yesterday was a surprise. I expected Mentor to handle Shaker pretty well. Most of the first half looked that way. Mentor’s defense didn’t have the same push up front that I saw them get in their most impressive performance against Cleveland Heights. Offensively, too many times they got into a...

    Greater Cleveland Conference (2023)

No, I had no issues of safety when I was at the Cleveland Heights game. They do have a policy prohibiting visiting fans from going into the home side. That implies to me that they have to take certain precautions that I don’t typically see at most schools. I didn’t bring up race. You did. I am...

Anybody know how the freshman game went yesterday? Any clue on the records of our current 8th grade teams? We know the sophomores have talent. As long as the 8th graders do, the program can handle one class in between that is a bit down as long as there are a few key varsity contributors. 6-0...

    Greater Cleveland Conference (2023)

Euclid announced that their home game this week is being moved to Brunswick. Unfortunately, they don’t have enough trust in a safe environment to host a game. Two weeks ago we saw that Shaker and Maple had to have a “no fans” game. That is probably more of a reflection on Maple than Shaker, but...

Ok thanks, I didn't realize. I looked up all of their playoff appearances and checked those records. Amazingly, 8-2 was only good enough for the 14th seed in a time when 8 teams made the playoffs. Looking at 2012 Region 1 is such a far cry from what we are dealing with currently. Partly due to...

    Mentor Football 2023

The last time Shaker (6-0) beat Mentor was in 2004 in an overtime game that ultimately was the last straw that kept Mentor out of the playoffs. That was also the last season that Shaker won more than 6 games in a season. Games at Shaker over the years have occasionally caused some headaches for...

Ugh, closer than I expected. Defense at the freshman level is not very good this year.

    Mentor Football 2023

With Wadsworth's win over Hudson this weekend, Mentor's chances at snagging a top four seed and two home games took a huge hit according to Drew Pasteur's projections. Mentor's most likely seed at this point is 5 or 6. Mentor was one 2 point conversion stop away from being in really good...

Solid start for them. 2024 season has the makings to be a step forward. Freshman struggled early, but they have put together some wins. Anyone know how did they did against Solon?

Nice bounce back for Mentor. So long Solon. It’s been a lot of good over the years. Glad Fox got back tonight too. The last four games will be good opportunities to improve and refine things heading into the playoffs.

That is unfortunate but my advice about the issue with the kids in practice is to keep that stuff off the public boards. I’m sure the kids involved, their parents, and the coaches would agree. Besides that issue, we saw some starters on defense getting banged up against Heights. So defense...

Fox is a 21 or 28 point swing I predict Mentor wins either way. With Fox, maybe something like 42-7. Without him, possibly 20-10.

An ode to Solon: Mentor plays Solon this week for what appears to be the last time in a while. Solon is making a logical move to the Suburban in football next season. Mentor will be open in non-conference play going forward, but I don't see the Comets chomping at the bit to play Mentor going...

    Division I Region 1 - Top 8 Teams

Ranking Region 1 after St Eds is incredibly difficult. I would put Medina at #2 personally, but of course the contradiction is that Mentor beat them head to head. St Ignatius beat Mentor head to head, but not many people would rank the Cats ahead of the Cardinals. Cleveland Heights beat Mentor...

    Mentor Football 2023

https://www.fantastic50.net/r01proj.html On second thought, Drew Pasteur's simulations look somewhat favorably upon Mentor's chances at two home games with a 7-3 record. Had they beaten Cleveland Heights (or Riverside), a top four seed would've been a lock. Probably a top two seed. 1...

    Mentor Football 2023

There are two teams that are almost a certainty to be ahead of a 7-3 Mentor: St Eds and the Medina/Heights winner. The Medina/Heights loser is probably also incredibly certain The McKinley/Jackson winner (especially if it's Jackson) is another. The Medina/Heights loser is also very likely to...

    Mentor Football 2023

We arrive at the halfway point of the regular season. A 2-3 record...could be better, but absolutely could be worse. That win over Medina was very much needed. I feel like 1-4 would feel like a complete mess. We know that the past four games have all come down to a final play at the end...

    Week 5 Mentor (2-2) @ Cleveland Heights (3-1)

Absolutely. But a different scheme for the starting QB would’ve opened up the running game. As it was, Heights just stacked the box and dared Mentor’s backup QB to beat them. That worked on that night. But in a rematch, that won’t be the case.

    Week 5 Mentor (2-2) @ Cleveland Heights (3-1)

What was a frustrating offensive night in a lot of ways (execution, player availability, and play calling) was a game in which Mentor’s defense did everything you could’ve asked and more. The point of attack up front was winning the battle in the trenches. Because if they didn’t, “Do it Allllll”...
