Living up to a top ranking....
Toughest part is teams get up to face you in season. You may play a team you should handle easily and are looking past them only for them to be fired up.
It's on the coaches to keep the players zeroed in for those lesser opponents.
Heard a thing about Saban last year that made me reflect on our coaches. It was said the weeks they had an easy opponent he was a bear on them. Tough, mean, loud, etc. And in rivalry weeks he was the opposite.
I recall the times when our coaches were the most vocal and urgent and that was the easier games. They didn't want us to lose focus. The big games.......those were the easy ones!
Definitely, agree. The mental game and sport psychology are so crucial to success in baseball. Coaches of course want to help athletes focus on the process and have the players worry about what they can control and not worry about what they do not have control over. As Dr. Ravizza, former Chicago Cubs mental training consultant, would say, "Control the Controllables" and become "Comfortable being Uncomfortable.
Saban highly values the mental aspects of football. He has had a variety of mental performance coaches work with his teams at Alabama. Saban constantly talks about focusing on the process.
I am not sure how much mental training has become a part of high school baseball in Ohio, but every MLB organization has mental performance coaches within their organization. In addition, we are starting to see MLB organizations also begin to focus more on mental health issues as well. Mechanicsburg has to get by a very very good Ben Logan team. Their only loss came to Northwestern behind a 1 hit performance from their pitcher. They hit the ball hard.
