2023 Bengals

Derrick Henry for Joe Mixon trade makes sense for both teams.

Extend him on a 3 year deal with 2 years or less guaranteed and bring his cap hit down to about $6m this season.

The Titans can cut Mixon and end up saving more than if they cut Henry.

That doesn’t feel like a good move to me. The Bengals is Burrow’s team and will win/lose by his passing, not handing it off to Henry 20+ times a game. Henry is 29 with some serious mileage and his receiving skills/pass blocking is questionable. Plus, in a trade I think the $$$ can stay with the team if there was some bonus $$$ paid out - not sure about Mixon & Henry contracts. Henry seems like a Baltimore or New England type move.

I think former Det & GB rb Jamaal Williams is one to consider. Williams is 27, coming off his best year and has been a 3rd down back with the Packers. Plus, he’s a FA. A lesser option could be Phi rb Miles Sanders who is a FA.

Best guess, how much will either of those two guys cost? 6M a year?

That sounds about right. Another guy who’s a talented FA but has baggage, Kareem Hunt.

Cutting Mixon will cost the Bengals 5.5M in dead cap. Add in a signing with a $6M cap hit and you have a RB1 for 11.5M in cap.
In my scenario the RB1 would be around $6M in cap.

The question then becomes, who is the best RB you can get for $6M in cap?

I don't think weighing down the team with big future cap hits for a rb like Henry make sense.

The Bengals really only lose when their lines fail.

The available options at RB are now minus Mile Sanders (Car) and Jamaal Williams (NO). Damien Harris, Kareem Hunt & Devin Singletary would be the next 3 highest available FA’s and per CBS.com they would go for $5-$7 mil per year.

Bengals have signed Orlando Brown for 4 years at $64M including a $31M signing bonus.
HUGE move. Less about Orlando Brown Jr (although he’s their best OL since Whit) and more about how they structured his contract. THIS AINT YA GRANDPAS BENGALS!! Joe Burrow with an owner willing to spend is a dangerous combo for the rest of the league.

I haven't seen the contract structure.
What is the cap hit this season?

$31M Signing Bonus is likely to be the only amount fully GRTD at signing (48%) but this is how the Bengals can structure a deal with enough Yr-1 cash which serves to effectively guarantee at least the first 2 years.

$16M AAV & taking him from KC!

^ via Andre Perrotta on Twitter who is a phenomenal follow for contract stuff. Have not seen the cap hit yet, though.

Edit: about $9m cap hit year 1. Haven’t seen anything official on it though.

It looks like Brown took less so he can be a LT, which is a great deal for the Bengals. I've heard differing reports on how much the Bengals save by cutting Collins. Does anyone know for sure? I think his injury complicates it. If it doesn't save much, the Bengals could put him on IR to save a roster spot until he's ready mid-season.

Not likely to happen. Not really in the style of the FO to do something like that, even if it does make sense money wise.

Based on Perine leaving, which for almost $4M per year as a backup RB that was a smart move by the Bengals, I expect Mixon to be back in some capacity UNLESS Williams and Evans prove in camp/preseason they can handle the load. I also fully expect the Bengals to draft a pass-catching RB - would love Gibbs from Alabama, but we'll see if he's there in the middle rounds to take.

If the Bengals take a RB such as Gibbs, and a RB room of Williams, Evans and rookie RB can handle it, then Mixon could be cut in camp/preseason. It saves the Bengals more money to cut him after June 1, if I remember correctly, so I don't see it happening before then, if it happens at all.

I realize it is not likely to happen.
I'm just saying if we are looking to add an expensive star RB then Henry for Mixon could work for both teams.

Keep Williams and Collins, move Williams to G, when one of our T get hurt, Williams shift to T.
I would try to trade Williams for the salary relief.

Perhaps the Colts would be interested in Williams for Smith (RT). Throw in a 4th round pick as well. Colts get some long term salary relief and a pick. The Bengals get a long term RT.

Cutting Collins and Mixon and trading Williams would allow Smith and still have money to add a TE and S in FA and probably even a corner back.

I feel like this is more of a depth piece but competition is welcome for a line that all of a sudden, feels almost solidified.

I love this new age Bengals. They aren’t relying on current players, they are always bringing in new guys to push others for jobs.
I'd still like to see them upgrade the RT position.

As of now I don’t like their options with Colllins making a week 8 return at the earliest. I don’t trust him to put in the work to get back ASAP. Maybe Williams will make the move and it will work out best for all involved.
