POY in Ohio

Yeah, given Elder's record and Maune's dominance, he should win easily. I also agree that Bianco should probably finish higher in voting than the other regional POYs

State awards are voted on by the coach of every team across the state, regardless of region. D1 coaches vote for only D1 players, ditto for D2 coaches.

So does anyone know when this is voted on, and who actually votes for the award.
It'll probably be voted on sometime this week or next since all regional meetings are done. Also, like everything else, coaches can't vote for their own players.

No disrespect to Maune. IMO Bianco is Elder's MVP.
You can make a case for either one, but Maune gets extra attention from defenses which allows other hitters to thrive and, even then, he still finds a way to get his kills. Bianco, on the other hand, does a great job of mixing up the offense and using himself as a weapon. Both are pretty solid at blocking, too, despite that not being what they're out there for. This kind of discussion is a great, great problem for Elder to have.

Hitters tend to get the glory. Take for instance last year. Gilbert was a beast but the only beast on his team thus gaudy numbers thus POY. However JJ from Moeller was the best player in state on the best team in the state thus, in my opinion, should have been player of the year.

Maune is so smooth, so consistent, and has such a great all-around game to go with great numbers. However he nor the rest of Elders offense is nearly as effective or efficient without Bianco running the O (and all the other tools he brings to the game). Bianco is probably MVP of his team, but not POY in state.

Same might be said for Rings in Centerville. A friend was telling me that they are 3-7 when he is out of the lineup. However Buirley and Holbrook put up big numbers thus they get the all region nods. Rings is still probably mvp on the team.

I'm sorry, I stopped reading after you said JJ was the best player in the state. Obviously you didn't watch Gilbert play last year. He was the best player in the state and it wasn't even close.

Gonna have to agree here. Players like Gilbert are once in a lifetime and he is something that may never be seen again in Ohio high school volleyball

I’m not always sold on the your offense is not nearly as effective without your setter argument. That would hold true pretty much for every team that is out there. Take out a setter and they are not as good. Period. Use the same argument with attackers. Would Centerville be as good without Buirley? I doubt it. You still have to have someone on the court that can put the ball away. Same could be said about Maune. Take him away and how does that Elder team look? I would say totally different and definitely not as good. Nothing demoralizes a team more than a devastating hitter. But still, someone has to get them the ball. The better setters make every ball that they play better. I think Bianco does that. Always a tough call at the end of the season and I am sure coaches want their big time players to step up. We will see here in about a week! Looking forward to it.

I totally see and hear what you all are saying. Maybe in my goofy brain I think of POY vs MVP. POY is best player i.e. talent, stats, dominance, etc. MVP is value to team, winning, culture based on skill, leadership, as well as talent, stats, etc. With that being said Gilbert is POY and JJ is the MVP (not that it matters since MVP isn't an award handed out).

Maune will win POY. 1st team All-State last year and an even better player this year. But like most great players he'd gladly give up POY for winning a state title.

And agreed...it's going to be a great run down the stretch. Really fun to watch if you live in those regions.

Ohio POY will be Maune. Absolutely hate how regional and state voting are set up. Players have always been posted on the regional all star sheet in order from most votes to fewest votes. South region, Maune got the most votes and therefore won POY. Then Wheatley, Patterson, Meyer, Bianco in order. Bianco deserved to be at least 2nd in votes if not first, but voting is set up so that coaches have to put all their eggs in one basket, so Tierney put the majority of his in for Maune. If state voting goes the same way it has most of the time in the past, Bianco could be on 2nd team or even HM all state when he really should be the top vote-getter along with Maune. Hopefully next year OHSAA changes the way voting is done so that coaches don't have to bank on one player. OHSVCA (volleyball coaches association) runs girls' all state voting and there have been years where I've seen as many as 3 girls from the same team get 1st team all state. Should be same with boys.. best players no matter if they're on the same team should be able to get equal votes. If Bianco doesn't get 1st team all state, I have no respect for this voting system anymore. Also, all regional POYs will make 1st team all state so there will be room for 3-4 additional players besides them. Will be interesting for sure.

Coaches can vote the entire Elder team 1st team all region, they just don't. If that were to happen, the 3rd and 4th Elder players would flex down to 2nd team, and the 5th and 6th guys would be HM. Max 2 players from each school on each team/HM.

Coaches generally spread it around which which is why you don't usually see the top 2 players from the same team.

Couldn't agree more than that. If Bianco isn't first team, it will be one of the big snubs (due to how voting works) of all time. Not a better setter in the set than Bianco.

coaches must submit their votes for State by Wednesday so they can have all of that information ready to put in the program for the state tourney the following week.

Seeing as Maune was POY for D1 south, I would think he will be POY for the state.

In D2, I think Halverson will probably win it, but I think Bennison from St Charles should have a shot. He's a beast.

The D2 should definitely be close. Both are great, great players and both mean an incredible amount to their respective teams. It just depends on what coaches think a POY should be.

Hopefully nothing serious. Would love to see how far he can take his Badin team.
Halverson seems to be fine. Maybe just a rest game before the post season. Bernie Lampe stepped up against West that next game. Ethan Gibson filled in for him against Beavercreek and held his own. Lampe has been a catalyst for Badin all year on the bench and comes in as a serving specialist. Want to see how to be a true teammate. Take notes from Lampe. The kid does it all.

All-State has been posted on the OHSBVA website.

Maune D1 POY, Bianco also made 1st team. Only one member on all teams from each of Moeller, X, and Walnut....

Bennison D2 POY
