Hilliard Darby District Thoughts?

I coached there for several years at the District meet and I have zero complaints with Darby. In fact, they were one of the better district locations I have coached at. I coached in all 3 divisions over 20 years so I have been to: Steubenville, Heath, Marion, Claymont, Coshocton, Cardington, Darby and I'm sure I am missing one or two places. I can't think of a single place that does it better than Darby. I had just as good of an experience at Claymont and Heath, but not better.
Mr.RR

why coach so many schools? You get fired? No loyalty? Or just bad coach?

also naming a bunch of other districts that also are bad doesn’t validate your argument.

I think the poster in question is coaching at a school that has moved up through the divisions over the last 20 years.

I appreciate the reply and information. In this comment "In doing so we discovered different ways to configure the gym, reduce some gym clutter, and allow for a better and less distracted environment for the competitors, coaches, referees, and table workers." you mention everyone but the spectators. I think this may not be so nice for spectators. Also, why does the head table HAVE to be in the main gym? Why can't it be in the aux gym? Just asking out of curiosity?
Prob best observation yet…why can’t the head table be in the aux gym????? Seems like wasted space for the main gym…

Mr.pug and Mr.mit

you bring up good points. I now am curious why the head table has to take up so much space in the gym.

my guess its to make the people from darby feel important. Must let everyone know they are from darby by standing 20 inches off the ground with a staff shirt on.

Housed at the Head Table is the bout board operator, bout board spotter, bout sheet runners, worker who runs baumspage, announcer, the IT specialist, the tournament manager (Darby AD), and most importantly the floor manager, ect.... Every year there is about a dozen things that go wrong... from scoreboard malfunctions to mat tape coming up and everything in-between; the floor manager usually springs to action fixing those things before anyone typically notices. Not really an option to have any of those workers in a different room than where the tournament is taking place. The actual stage was thrown in by the AD last year. From my understanding the stage will be much smaller this year to take up less room as we do not have Wrestle One running trackwrestling this year.

Also, we won't know until the set-up is complete late tomorrow night, but we think we will manage to have enough space on the floor to allow coaches and competitors to flow back and forth from the field-house and gym bullpen area (space in front of the head table) without restriction. It may make that space tight, but we will still have the live feed in the field-house for those coaches and kids who want out of the gym and have a more quiet space to relax and focus while still watching the matches. All coaches and competitors will be able to use the same hallway as last year to go out the the cafeteria and spend time with family and fans. We will still ask that all team personnel (with wrist bands) stay out of the bleachers to allow for as much spectator seating as possible, as well as all spectators to stay out of the competition area to save as much space on the floor for wrestlers and coaches.

We should also have the matches streaming to the cafeteria TVs, for those who would like to share a meal with their families and still watch the action. Plus the bout board will be on the large digital board in the gym, on a couple of TVs in the field-house, as well as a QR code that can be used for anyone to have the live bout board on their phone.

And yes, the spectator experience is important to us as well; we are certainly taking a gamble by doing this set-up, but we hope that, for the betterment of the wrestlers and wrestling environment, that we can keep all wrestlers and coaches out of the bleachers and make up for the lesser seats. We shall see.

I have my hands full the next couple of days, so I probably will not be able to get on here to further defend the tournament, ha... So, have fun beating us up on your keyboards in my absence. Best of luck to all of the wrestlers; I hope that you enjoy your experience and leave everything you have on the mats!

Mr. Ozzie

that was a good response. Hope things go well for everyones sake and sanity.

still dont know what was so bad about the way before but ill try new things i guess.

Ozzie, the Darby district has always been ran top notch and the hospitality room is the best around. Most of the things that would make it better are physical or administration things beyond your control at this time. Some of the things that were issues like the 4th mat blood rounds wrestling without required boundary space against bleachers is gone. Reducing blood round to 3 mats was good. If there was short break to pull out opposite bleacher before blood round it would help as team mates won't have to climb up and sit on collapsed bleachers if wrestlers helped it would be 15 mins top and worth the better experience.
If administration would have early release or even school off maybe you could start a little earlier and go two championships one consi or even wrestle consis after 2 championships. We would get done hour later but we could push the start time to 10 the next morning.
I'm sure you've thought about these things but "there are no solutions just trade offs" Thomas Sowell. Trade offs will get a different set of problems from other groups that wants it a certain way. In the end nothing will be equal but it can be fair so moving 4th mat off bleachers was fair. Random order of bouts to wrestle on random mats is fair. Mathematically it's impossible to have big matches for host team on certain mat over and over again. I like baums page but switching to Trackwrestling would take care of bout board, team scores and it will randomly assigns bouts to mats being much more fair. Anyhow running a tournament is incredibly tough and until you do it you have no idea of the bureaucratic layers and obstacles to overcome.

I bet it felt good when you wrote this and hit that send button. I'll never understand the psychology of insulting someone whom you never met or know anything about except that he doesn't 100% agree with your opinion about the seating arrangements of an HS wrestling tournament if which neither of you has any ability to influence, especially on this board.

SO....will there be any wrestling at the Darby District or just a discussion on interior design and event management skills? 3 pages of posts and about 5 have to do with wrestling. The rest is an op-ed about lay out. good grief.

I think Coffman wins it, who takes 2nd? O. Liberty or Marysville? Can't wait for the blood rounds.

Rather than go through and make picks (have horses in the race) Ill comment on some of the predictions made by Boro...

Brackets: https://www.baumspage.com/cedist/hi1/2021/2022 Brackets.htm

106

Consi Semi1: Jordan over Mokros
1st Place: Krysty over Havens
The last two spots look wide open!

-I also like Jordan to get out. Id take Havens over Krysty though.
Food for thought though, should Krysty win, does this put him into title contention? Already a threat to place imo.

120

Consi Semi1: Walls over Parks (I have Parks wrestling all the way back)
This weight could go VERY DIFFERENTLY!

-No kidding.
Id say the favorite is as close to a lock as you are going to get at this weight. 2-4 completely up in the air. Super interesting weight to watch. Not certain how much success we will have here as a district next week. I think that at least 1 state qualifier will emerge from match number 019, could be the winner or the loser.

126

QF3: Spurgeon over Gardner
QF4: Cerny over Agin
SFT: Ayoub over Cernus
SFB: Cerny over Spurgeon
Consi Semi1: Cernus over Agin
Consi Semi2: Spurgeon over Fowler (I have Fowler wrestling all the way back)
1st Place: Ayoub over Cerny
3rd Place: Cernus over Spurgeon

-Seems every few years something like this happens and there is an uproar that the draw system should be overhauled. I do not like this take. Should both Cernus and Ayoub win their final match (1st, 3rd), which I am 99% sure they will, they will be separated at the state level. Which is what their eyes are on anyway. Which is more important, a District title, or state title? Just ask Ty Wilson and Coach Huddle (They'd tell you they want to win it all, I'm sure.).
I like Cernus to win here. I am SUPER interested to see what happens in the bottom bracket. There is potential for tons of controversy. Insane weight.

138

QF2: Speakman over Sferrella (WIDE OPEN QTR)
QF3: Boothby over Witt
Consi Semi1: Witt over Speakman
Consi Semi2: Boothby over Numan

-In truth I was not too excited about this weight, but between last week and now looking at the bracket I am really interested.
If you told me Giordano, Speakman, or Sferrella made the Semi Final I would not be shocked. I actually like Witt over Boothby to make the bottom semi.
The go-to matches at this weight will be ultra-competitive. I have Speakman v Boothby, and Sferrella vs Witt. (Sferrella v Numan in the previous round - whew).
I'll take Boothby, and Sferrella to qualify.

157

QF1: Euton over Henderson
Consi Semi1: Halliday over Sauter (I have Sauter wrestling all the way back)
Consi Semi2: Goffin over Henderson

-I actually have Sauter making the Qtr, losing to Euton, then coming back to place.
I Also have Will over Goffin. Goffin/Sauter to go. I have Goffin winning.
Unfortunate bracketing here, because I do think Halliday could be a finalist if not for Euton.
Dropping down I think Halliday faces Henderson/Carl to go. I went with Henderson, who I then have losing to Halliday to go.
In the end you have Euton, Will, Halliday, and Goffin advancing to State.

There are a few more I might go through. We'll see!

Full football stadiums and we limit spectators for wrestling? Does that grow the sport? Yes, I respect volunteers. I don't have to agree with the decisions. Limiting capacity doesn't grow the sport. Kids are wrestling, so that's the most important thing happening.

Awesome job adding the links. Thanks

I love Neil Krysty but I don't think he beats two seniors and a junior. I think Havens is the clear fav. Krysty quarter final (I think he wins) and semi final against seniors will be great to watch. Neil is the 2nd best wrestler in this group but he is a bit small. His time will come but not a district title this year.
I think he is podium potential at state just a step below Havens. But so is everyone else.

Update: There are only two juniors and two seniors at 106. Neal has to beat all four to win the district. Nice side story to watch.

Not insulting. Real questions. How do you know i dont know Mr. RR? Thats a bold assumption Mr.luc.

Have a bunch of close friends down that way. Was there for state last year and didnt have a good experience.
Well ...........while i may not like some of your comments, or agree, there is something to be said for an outside opinion/observation. This is the only district i have been to for 15 yrs. If we were on Amazon and adding a rating there is a 1 to 5 scale. It SEEMS like Darby listened and made changes to last year district and state setup. Hopefully it goes well.

Hopefully that is in fact the case. Last year may have been different due to all the restrictions. But some above comments how teammates cant watch each other is silly.

Should be a good race for 2nd. Marysville is my pick but bucksman appears to be choosing Lancaster based on his picks. I think it is as follows
Coffman takes their 3rd straight
Marysville
Lancaster (a lot will depend on 126 where they will likely have a 2nd or dnq)
Liberty (have a couple hammers but most of there 13 will struggle to get on the podium IMO)

Looks like everyone caught my Krysty over Havens error. As always, I use a hybrid of my almanac and sectional results (upsets) to put together my predictions. I fixed it. Sorry for the confusion.

I respect that Darby is doing there best. If you can find a seat this configuration will be better. Im thinking that it might be a problem finding a seat but time will tell.

It's too bad a gym like fairmont in the southwest district doesn't exist in central ohio to my knowledge. I'm sure the folks at Darby could run an amazing district with a facility like that.

Agree 100%. Darby absolutely makes the most of the situation they have. it is a shame we don't have any colossal schools in the 614 like they do in SWO. You mention Fairmont. A place like Lakota East would be outstanding as well.

Good luck to all this weekend. if you are fortunate enough to have a kid competing this weekend, you are fortunate enough.

Okay, I will take the bait... As one of the team members that helps organize and execute the Central District Tournament, I can help with some of the misconceptions that some may have "heard".

First, there will be floor seating. The floor bleachers on the South end of the gym (across from where the head table was last year) will be open for spectators. The remaining space for spectators will be in the balcony.

Second, we will use the "cube" gym configuration due to a high approval rate from the coaches. With that said, we are making small adjustments to add as much space as possible between the head table and the mats to allow for coaches to remain in the gym throughout the tournament; that was important for the coaches and we completely understand and agree with that. If that space is not too congested, then we may be able to have competitors come in and out of that space as well; that decision will be made as the tournament proceeds. One reason for trying to limit that space in the gym is due to the fact that one of the most consistent complaints that we receive is that the "bullpen" area in the gym is too congested.

Thirdly, we will ask that all team personnel (competitors and coaches / stats with a proper wrist band) not sit in the bleachers, as the "cube" configuration does reduce the seating capacity roughly 150 seats. So, if team personnel can remain in the "gym bullpen", field-house, or cafeteria, then spectator seating should not be an issue. Live feeds will once again be available in the field-house, however it will not be with trackwrestling; it will be a different streaming software, so our hope is that the delay will be minimal, if at all. Testing on the streaming took place today and went well. Most of the feedback that we received was positive about the projecting the live stream last year... The decision to livestream that way (instead of on TVs) was to help people social distance, instead of be huddled around a TV; but if someone has four 75" HD TVs that they would like to donate, then that would be great. I would like to add that 99% of the wrestlers and coaches were very respectful with social distancing and wearing of masks last year... There was some real leadership shown by many in a tough situation.

Fourthly, there are multiple schools that help with different aspects of the tournament, and we are appreciative. Hilliard Bradley donates scales and mats, Mount Vernon donates scales, and Dublin Jerome donates scoreboards for the tournament. We are very appreciate for any and all help and constructive suggestions.

Lastly, I do not quite understand some of the negativity about this year's tournament before it even starts. Last year we were given a moving list of restrictions and did the best we could. In doing so we discovered different ways to configure the gym, reduce some gym clutter, and allow for a better and less distracted environment for the competitors, coaches, referees, and table workers. The goal is for everyone involved to have a positive and memorable experience in such a tense tournament. By no means would we not want to allow teammates to take part in each others post season run, but I did witness a ton of kids run back through the tunnel to the field-house only to be mobbed by happy teammates after a big win; it is different than the past but neat to watch. We would love to have a facility large enough to hold 8 mats and run the DI and DII Central District Tournaments at the same site, but that is just not the case; so we try to do the best we can... If that is not good enough for you, then feel free to call me with better ideas.

Brendan Moody
Not being from your district but experiencing the state tournament last year I felt you guys did a tremendous job. Keep up the great work and ignore the haters and keep listening to the stakeholders who have a vested interest in wanting a quality tournament for the wrestlers/fans and are willing to put forth effort instead of just complaints.
