St. Edward (4-0) @ Massillon (3-1)

Missed him and Beasley defensively for sure. Didn't see Welch either. Wonder if we had a covid issue (?). All looked fine last week, and how would our kicker be out?
Yeah something is up. We definitely missed him and Beasley. Dang I forgot about Welch what the hell is going on?

Yeah we had a lot of regulars out. Injury, discipline or covid? On to the next.

Slaughter gives us an opportunity to throw the ball downfield. I like the fact that even when scrambling he keeps his eyes downfield. Don't know if he'll be "the man" from here on out but he definitely need to have some packages. We still need work on our coverage defensively and our tackling has regressed bad. Credit to the St. Ed rb's, they ran really hard (always do) they ran like they were in a street fight. BUT....there were so many plays where we made contact at or near the LOS and they still got 5, 7 or 10 yards.

As an alumni of St Edward, I enjoy the Massilon experience. St Edward and Massilon are not rivals. They've only played something like seven times in history. Hardly a number you can build or claim a rivaly on. They're not even in the same division anymore, but its great to see the competition between two great programs. The traditional St Edward fan doesn't expouse the hate directed at Massilon that you see on so many of these threads. The truth is St Edward fans love the atmosphere at Massillon. How can you not? Go to Kindler's Pub for a re-game burger. Take in the next-level tailgating. Its really great history. As a Cleveland Brown's fan I'm very proud to see how Massilon has kept Paul Brown's legacy alive. The St Edward kids getting a chance to play at Paul Brown stadium is truly a great lifetime opportunity. Win or lose, that in itself is an honor. Good luck to the Massilon Tigers going forward.

What took Massillon so long to open it up? Everyone knows Power is your favorite play, and you only ran one PAP off of it. Young team that sounds like had some guys out, but played tough to the end. Made it interesting and with the expanded playoffs, the Tigers could be dangerous. The next two years will be interesting in Tigertown.

Freshman QB still finding his way.

Some encouraging things to take away from this loss for a very young Tiger team. Couple of big plays over the top really killed us tonight, St. Ed's Qb just had too much time on those plays. Anyway we knew running between the tackles was not going to work and when we finally had to open it up in the 2nd half and some nice things happened. We continue to struggle with the offensive play calling, not sure why we threw 4 consecutive fade routes to end the game? We can play with anyone in the State, we've got a bright future, but the play calling offensively is head scratching at times.

Agreed play calling I just don’t understand sometimes. However young stud QB missed Campbell for a TD on the last drive but to your point, play calling smh

The good: The effort was awesome, especially since several starters were out or injured during the game. They played like Tigers! Brawley is amazing and is all over the field. Slaughter did an admirable job after the injury to McElroy. To be a freshman playing against an elite team, he showed a lot of composure.

The bad: St. Ed had 450 yards of total offense, split almost evenly between run and pass. I understand St. Ed is the cream of the crop in the state this year, but that must be cleaned up.

The ugly: 0-10 on third down and 0-2 on fourth down. Ouch!!!

Build on the effort and come into Austintown strong. Go Tigers!

No, what killed Massillon was a lack of an offensive or defensive front, coupled with a lack of playmakers. If Moore can develop the players, you might have a chance, but with the David Center there is no reason he can’t.

We knew that we weren't going to match up well upfront with Ed's and that's why they were able to make those plays over the top, we couldn't get any pressure. Conversely, on offense we weren't going to be able to run between the tackles because we don't have the talent upfront.
We've got more than a chance, this program is rolling and the future is really bright. As always we've got things that have to be addressed and cleaned up, but overall we're in great shape.

Excuses? No sweetie, that's me being positive about moving forward. St Ed was probably going to win had McElroy, Hartson, Rue and Beasley played. No excuses here, the Pick Central and St. Ed's are always going to be a challenge but....you wouldn't understand....congrats on the big Ellet win though.

No probably about it, St Edward was going to win regardless of the injuries. In any case the kicker wasn't going to make a difference.
In case you missed it McElroy and Hartson played, but were knocked out of the game by the hard hitting Eagles.

That largely sums it up. Talent/size differential in the trenches. The loss of Hartson early was a blow, but he was going to have deal with getting hit in the backfield or LOS the whole night. It was going to be tough sledding regardless. While the Massillon fans may have wanted to take more downfield shots in the pass game, the protection was simply not there to afford the freshmen time. The quick hitters and slip screens were the right calls to get the ball into the receivers hands quickly and hope that your playmakers could make plays.

As for the young QB, a lot to look forward to there for the Tigers. What impressed me most were those throws in the rare trips inside the red zone. He put the ball where it was supposed to be to allow only his receiver an opportunity at the football. You don’t see a lot of young QB’s with the wherewithal to throw guys open like that. It was birth by fire, and he responded well. It should only get “easier” for him moving forward. I say you guys roll with him and prepare for the future.

Ankle injuries are rarely caused by hard hits. But thanks for proving my point on the youngens holding their own. ??
