Gilmour won last night 108-1. I heard 92.3 the Fan talking about it this morning. It was something like 98-0 at the start of the fourth quarter. This is at least what they were saying.
 
 
I, was at the game. Gilmour, used their entire bench by the middle of the first quarter 36-0. (Prep had 8 players Gilmour maybe 9, three from the JV roster.) There was a technical on College prep at the end of the quarter making it 38-0 by the beginning of the second quarter (illegal line-up) It was 73-1 by the half. Prep took many shots and none of them fell. This team is only in their second year of their program. Most of the game it was Gilmour's subs against Preps starters. Gilmour out scored Prep 35-0 in the second half. Prep did play hard till the end of the game, pressing and trapping but nothing worked,. Gilmour stalled and passed as much as they could. Prep's zone defense had all 5 players within a foot of the key and pretty stationary, not challenging any outside shots.
 
How does stalling not work? I think there are things that could have been done to avoid this. It doesn't sound like they were capable of scoring more than 1 point, I get that. But 108 doesn't have to happen. Can't the coach make certain players do certain things? For example, only opposite hand shots from outside of the key, or pass the ball for one minute before taking a shot. It doesn't matter if it's your bench vs their starters.
 
Gilmour did all of that plus Only the JV players shot. There was no challenging of shots by Gilmour. They shot 0-30. You had to be there. Some of their shots hit the time clock. This team is not developed at all. I, don't want to say much more then that. They need a lot of work, running with the ball, etc. They are not strong at anything, no concept of spacing,dribbling, shooting,passing, etc etc. This school is a charter school and a lot of their programs are in the embryo stage. They have to start somewhere.
 
This is one time taking the bye in the first round would have been a good idea. Probably would have ended up playing the #12 seed in the second round but I would guess that everyone in the district knew how the #13 seed stacked up.
 
Sorry, I just don't buy into all of the justification for 108 points. If you have the option and are that good, take a first round bye. If that was not an option, there are only 32 minutes in a game and why not instruct whomever is on the court to hold the ball for 1 minute or even 2 minutes before a shot goes up. If you lose the ball, big deal. You know you will be getting it back shortly for another 1 or 2 minutes before the next shot. What possible things can a team work on with a disparity between 2 teams. If a coach wants more work, hold an intense practice after the game. If that were my school, I would call for the coach's resignation and a disciplinary action for the AD for not pulling the coach aside at halftime and give the above instructions.

I couldn't disagree more. The teams showed up for a compitition and it's not Gilmores fault that the other team was not ready to play. The bench players for a team work as hard as the starters all year, and when they get to play they should be allowed to play. If the other team wanted to forfeit at halftime then their AD and coach should have made that decision.

As long as there has sportsmanship and every one was doing their best let them play. Turn off the scoreboard if you need to. I would rather see teams compete, then one team playing keep away and running the clock without trying to score. In my opinion, that can be more damaging to the other team then the final score was.

I agree. How about the Gilmour players miss their shots on purpose? There is nothing to prove at this point. If the other team was that bad, then hit the backboard with every shot. Or air balls. Anything except to keep making baskets. Shameful.

So, your kids study really hard and did their homework every day. Their teacher gives a surprise quiz. do you encourage them to miss some questions on purpose when they find out some of their classmates were not prepared for the suprise quiz?

My point is why is it the responsibility of the winning team to "miss shots on purpose and throw up some air balls".

My guess is Gilmour was not pressing or playing aggressive defense. Why didn't the other team cross over mid court and just hold the ball for the quarter and run out the clock themselves.

Why do they get to be the victims and Gilmour be the villains. I don't have a dog in this fight, but I did have a chance to meet the Gilmour team while we shared a hotel with them in Berlin for the Classic. I was impressed with how well mannered and polite these young women were. For them to be degraded for playing hard is insulting.

Because it would have been the respectable and sportsmanlike thing to do. Whether the score was 20-1 or 50-1 or 108-1, Gilmour still would have won the game. It simply was not necessary.

I'm not saying it was the athletes faults. Quite the contrary. They do what their coach tells them to do. And, if this wasn't such an outrageous thing to have happen, why is it on the national airwaves? Because everyone knows it was just plain wrong.

The reason why it made national media is because most people love the victim mentality. It Makes you feel warm and fuzzy. Oh, those poor girls...

What should happen is the other coach should release a statement that says thank you to the Gilmour Acadamy for,the well played game. It was obvious that they were well prepared and coached, and I appreciate that they did everything possible to not make the scoring margin even greater then it was. I am proud of my team for giving their all for 32 minutes, and not quitting. This will only make us better next year. My team saw what the best team in our division looks like in the State of Ohio. We were able to,see the amount of hard work and dedication that is needed to compete at that level, and we will start working tommow on getting to that level.

Please do not pity us or make us a victim. Our team has too much pride to be labeled in this negitive light.

You need to,save your pity party for sometbody else. Not,everyone will get a State championship ring this year. It's an important life lesson learned at a teachable age.
 
I can't believe some of you are defending that score. You can as the winning coach control the score. Stop with the "it's their job to stop us" nonsense. Slow the game down, no running in transition, run sets for 10 passes or more. There is no need EVER imho to get to 100 points. How are you getting better? The problem as others stated is not the 1 pt... the problem is scoring 108.

FWIW, I'm not against letting the jv kids play/score.. just saying there's PLENTY you can do to avoid scores like that. It's also not the first time (or the last) that said coach has done stuff like that. In my experience, it comes back to bite you in the end. Karma's a cruel-hearted B.
 
As stated in my earlier post on this thread, the blame should fall directly on the head coach with the AD also being suspect (I am assuming that most if not all ADs would attend a school's playoff game). Poor example shown to the athletes and fans of both schools. No place in sports for that.

True... Seems like it would have been a great opportunity to work on "4 corners" or some form of stalling... Might need to use something like that down the road...

And, the freshman (who's a VERY good player) was kept in the game until the buzzer. UHS was up 82-16 to start the 4th quarter and the starters were still in the game...that was after EP scored 1 point in the 3rd quarter. I'm not sure if the UHS coach has an issue with EP or something...I thought it was odd for them to pump EP like that.
 
Missing shots on purpose, not shooting, not playing hard and dribbling out the clock is far more embarrassing to the opponent than the final score. You still have to play the game, if prep didnt want to play the game they could have always opted out of the tourney.

I guess I just don't understand how the mentality of Gilmour having to account for the other team's poor performance or low talent level to make everyone feel better makes sense. Based on comments in this thread, it seems like the other team's head coach had an opportunity as early as the second quarter to stall and hold this score down without Gilmour forcing the issue. Clearly the Prep coach did not take that tactic and was okay exposing his team to this margin of loss.

When you read some of these posts you start to understand how radical liberals and socialists can get elected. When feelings trump thought, reason and rationality, we are in trouble. We have been gifted with equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. The sooner many folks get a grip on that, the better we will ALL be.

But if it makes any of liberal crowd on here FEEL better, they should take solace in the fact that the score could probably have been 170 - 1, but the winners took it easy.

I'm with McGal and 20/20 on this one. You couldn't run your offense where you're required to make 20 crisp passes before taking a shot or layup? How about on a defensive rebounding, running a half court offense instead of pushing it up? Why not try to work on execution with making them run through two plays/offenses before taking a shot? Gilmour should be lucky they didn't have an injury in a game that was already decided. Why not give JV kids more time to give yourself a deeper bench if needed down the road? That's in general. It may not be a solid point for Gilmour because I don't know their number situation, but no excuses having your starters in the entire game. How many JV players are in Gilmour program? The fact only 2-3 is alarming to me. You don't have the others on the bench at least? Doesn't make sense to me.

Some situations really are no-win.

You want to give the poorer team a game. Those kids showed up to play a game, they should get a game. But you aren't being respectful if you treat the whole team like the disabled kid you're trying to pump up by letting them score, particularly when you do try to let them score and they still can't. :shrug:

This seems to me more a problem with the system than with the schools that played. A match-up system more dynamic than enrollment might be reasonable in sports that are struggling to grow, which would apply to many girl's sports which do not have the talent and coach vetting of boy's sports.

Another poor rationalization eib. It is not a system breakdown. You are always going to have mismatches. Call it sportsmanship, life lessons being taught to 15-18 year old young women, appreciation and empathy (yes empathy) for the other team as well as their parents and fans. I can't believe all the fans of the winning team felt comfortable with the final score.
