North Canton Hoover 12, Central Crossing 0: Central Crossing falls hard

Last week, Central Crossing coach Rona Dorsey named five-time state champion North Canton Hoover the favorite to advance from a four-team Division I softball regional at Ohio State.

Wise choice.

Hoover dispatched Grove City in a semifinal on Thursday and rolled to a regional championship in a five-inning, 12-0 win over Central Crossing yesterday.

Hoover sophomore Tara Thacker, perhaps the smallest player on either roster, pitched a one-hitter.

“She’s sneaky fast,” Hoover coach Jerry Goodpasture said. “She’s not a big girl, but she locates the ball very well. As a sophomore, she’s ahead of most. We let her on the roster toward the end of last year, and she got a taste of what this is all about.”

Thacker (15-1) struck out seven and walked three.

She did not pitch in the tournament last year but was on the roster for Hoover’s run to its third state championship in five seasons.

“I saw how everybody acted, and the intensity of it,” Thacker said. “It’s different being in the stands than it is in the dugout, so I think that helped.”

Goodpasture preached plate discipline against Central Crossing ace Savannah Dorsey (25-3), who entered the game with 339 strikeouts and had allowed only two hits in a regional semifinal win over Pickerington Central.

But Dorsey walked two of the first three Hoover batters before Erika Warren smacked a two-run triple to the base of the center-field wall. Warren scored on a sacrifice fly by Sarah Nist, and Central Crossing (26-4) trailed 3-0 after a half-inning.

“(Savannah) let that first inning get to her,” Rona Dorsey said. “She kept bringing that ball up in the zone, and a good hitter is going to hit when it’s up in the zone. She didn’t have her best stuff. It’s unfortunate.”

Dorsey walked the leadoff hitter in four of five innings. Hoover (28-3) scored five runs in the second and led 12-0 after the third.

“You have to have a little bit of patience, and that’s where I thought our kids did a great job,” Goodpasture said. “We made her throw the ball into the strike zone. I give my kids a lot of credit for laying off the rise ball and making her bring it in.”

Hoover leadoff hitter Mackenzie DiPietro drew four walks and scored three runs.

When Dorsey threw strikes, the Vikings pounced.

Sophomore Jenna Lilley tripled twice and had four RBI. Junior Ally Farrah was 3 for 4 and drove in three runs.

Hoover played mistake-free in the field. It turned an inning-ending double play and did not allow a runner beyond second base.

All Saturday results have (finally) been posted.

Apologies to fans of the Covington Buccs -- had your team beating Triad in the semifinals, but mistakenly put Triad in the championship game. This has been changed and updated.

Also note the Region 15 title game was Friday night, and I didn't catch it.
