I hate to say this, but Browns fans do need to be patient. With all the upheaval associated with the Browns management since 1999, has left their roster short on talent. They lack depth (and playmakers). "Staying the course" is the smart thing ... I'm glad they realize that. Starting all over again is the last thing we need. Holmgren realizes that the Mangini was a mistake and slowed the process down. Looking at the roster now ... their is more young talent on it than when H & H took over. I don't expect miracles next year, but I would like to see some improvement ... say 7 or 8 wins. I don't think we need a "playoffs or you are fired" mentality. Stability is the biggest thing this franchise has been missing ... so like it or not, I feel H & H & S should get at least two more years unless next year is a complete disaster.

I don't mind being patient (been patient with the Browns for 34 years), but the thing that bothered me was the thought of building through the draft without getting FA's, and them knowing where the lack of talent was, while bringing in players from other practice squads on the cheap to address those needs (looking for that diamond in the rough).
The good thing about this is, next year they will have to spend cap money, so we won't see those somewhat meaningless transactions we saw last season.

Here's the problem....it's ONE thing for the fans to be "patient", we've had this asked of us since 1999....it's completely ANOTHER when your team president says after firing Mangini "5-11 in unacceptable", the team lays a 4-12 "egg" and the new regime shows NO sense of urgency to turn this around.
It's NOT going to happen overnight but if Heckert doesn't start infusing this roster with QUALITY/IMPACT free agents we're going to be lucky if it happens in another 3-5 years, relying mostly on the draft.
I don't know how impressed you can be with Flynn. The sample size is too small to determine if it's the system or him. If the Browns want RGIII, they let Washington go after Flynn.
Flynn was a development type draft pick; has excellent QB tutors in GB, has only started 2 games, but went 24/37 251 3td's 1int against a 11-2[at that time] NE last year and had the monster game this year. GB's system? the one that produces good QB's?

What happens if they only spend cap money to give contract extensions to Thomas, Peyton Hillis, Ahtyba Rubin, D'Qwell Jackson, Steiny, and Colt McCoy? Last I heard the Browns are $33.3 million under and the league as a whole has to spend 99 percent of the entire cap on player contracts prior to 2013.
Guess what I'm saying is, I'd hate to see them exhaust the cap money on players they currently have in place, and rely strictly on the draft for upgrades, with this team basically looking like the one fielded in 012 all over again.

Wonder if GB will want to keep him as a backup. I'd rather see them get Flynn than RGIII (then they could take a WR with the #4 pick). We have seen that he can perform at the NFL level, while RGIII (or any other drafted QB) would be a question mark.

GB can't afford him, he is an unrestricted free agent; so unless they franchise him, he is gone. Franchising him is a gamble, that makes him a $14million dollar QB, not many teams can afford to have a $14million player sitting on the bench.
I don't understand the sudden hype around Matt Flynn. The guy had one good game and now there are talks about Green Bay giving him the Franchise Tag, Browns going after him, etc. I just don't see why the Browns would want Flynn when someone like RGIII may be out there in the draft.
+1 Kelly Holcomb could light it up everyone once in a while too
This is a QB league. If you don't have one, you have nothing. The playoff QB's that aren't 1st round picks, or at least very high 2nd round (Brees and Dalton) are becoming increasingly rare.
The Browns D needs some work, for sure, but they did finish in the NFL top 10, so they don't have as far to go as the offense.
Adequate WR's and RB's can be found beyond the first round. QB? Not so much. If the Browns believe RG3 is a legit NFL QB, they must take him. You build the team around him. Great QB's make everyone look better...receivers, line, RB's, even the defense (which gets to stay on the sidelines longer).
If the Browns think RG3 can be a playoff QB, there is no more need for discussion at pick #4. They take Griffin and make the Browns into his team.

Thomas & Rubin have been extended already. I think they will let Hillis walk. DQ Jackson will be a priority. Steinbach I doubt they extend (dicey injury) and I certainly don't see them wasting money on McCoy.
I think I might change NFL teams by next year. Can't take these sh*t stain Browns anymore. Who to pick hmm. Then again I will probably just keep on being a loser Browns fan

Hang in there. This lousy season forced H%H to get on the stick.

Of the 32 starting Qb's in the league, 20 were taken in the first round. Of the top 15 passers in the league, 10 were taken in the first round. Of the 12 playoff QB's, 8 were taken in the first round.
The most notable non-first round QB's are Brady (6th round), Brees (2nd), Romo (undrafted), and Shaub (3rd).

Koknis 2009 (1/2 year)
Mangini 2009 (1/2 year)
Heckert 2010 to now. ..... That is 6 GMs in 13 years
That is the definition of instability ... I don't care that they went from 5-11 to 4-12 ... Changing again is flat out stupid! Anyone who didn't see the Browns taking a step backwards this season is fooling themselves ... We canned a veteran coach with mostly veteran players and replaced them with a rookie coach and young players ... I know the record didn't show it, but I feel better about this year's roster than last years roster. The Browns where competitive in 13 of 16 games this year ... with an infusion of a little more depth and some offensive playmakers they could make some significant improvement next year. Next year they need to be around .500 and the following in or near the playoffs ... if that doesn't happen, then change would be understandable.

Didn't say anything about changing the coaches. Just said they needed a greater sense of urgency (by using free agency). After seeing three other teams in this division make the playoffs, one would think they would realize that.
If we could get Flynn in FA and draft Blackmon, that would be ideal. Completely new offense if that happens. If we don't get Flynn, then I want RGIII with the 4th pick, and a receiver or tackle with the next pick.
I don't think you can put much into a single game or two games over two seasons. QBs aren't really "exposed" until there's sufficient tape on them. He played very well, that's true, but how do you project his performance once teams are actually dissecting his game and scheming to stop him specifically? He wasn't even named the starter until the day before the game, I believe.
I don't have an issue with giving him chance, I just have an issue with throwing a bunch of money at him when he's mostly an unknown. Let the Redskins do that.
