Personally, I would like to have seen them do this quietly instead of looking like it was a reaction to the current news. It seems strange to have had that mascot in the first place for a school from Ohio.

We have a county and school named after a confederate general. John Hunt Morgan. Morgan High School Raiders. South Gallia is the Rebels. South Gallia is called the Rebels because the state forced them to consolidate with other schools, after a few years South Gallia broke off and made their own school

Not really weird. Just a tie-in with the fact that the school name is "South."

Same thing with old Indian Valley HSs before they merged. Indian Valley North was the "Big Blue," and Indian Valley South was the "Rebels."

As the article points out, Cleveland John Adams is also the "Rebels." Seems odd as well until you consider that those who were key players in the American Revolution were by definition "rebels."

I remember when Willoughby South had the Confederate Battle Flag on their unis, thought it was stupid for a school located in Ohio to do this. Wasn't Westerville South at one time called the Rebels too?

Snowflakes upset about the name change should go back to their safe spaces.

I can't understand why a school would want Rebels as a nickname with a Confederate soldier as a mascot - THEY lost!!!

The ironic part is Willoughby Union School split in 1958 to form Willoughby South and Eastlake North. This in an era of school desegregation and nobody batted an eye to make a North school and a South school.

I attended John Adams in Cleveland. We changed the mascot from a Confederate rebel to a revelutionary war type Rebel in 1989.

I hope you are kidding about Che. I mean obviously a joke post but Bowie or dean would be insulted to be grouped with him even in that

. I mean democrats do love castros right hand man and hitman for some reason. But these idiot liberals that support him need to realize he's just as bad as Hitler's go to guy ...

Then again they like to rewrite history so who knows.

That's way more offensive than a simple fake rebel mascot

I know someone who is a "Crusader" could fit into a lot of contexts but if you are looking at some of the more prominent crusaders in history it's a rather violent (and humbled) group if it has any connection to the Middle Ages/Middle East.

A part of me is surprised that there were not more high schools in the country that went the way of Ole Miss when they decided to do away with Colonel Reb, Confederate flags etc. Same when Miami U got rid of Redskins.

Fairfield High School, the Indians, have used this silhouette of a brave/warrior for years and put it on everything:

Purely an observation but I find it interesting that they chose to put their "redesigned" version of the Florida Gators "F" at midfield of their new artificial playing surface. It has crossed my mind that it may have been done intentionally to avoid a costly maybe unfeasible replacement if a phase out/name change may be forthcoming. They also put Fairfield in both end zones rather than Indians in one. Just me turning the rumor mill on all of this = )

1) Only reasoning being they're on the "south" end of town. Stupid, get rid of.

2) Supposedly named after a fire station team but seems more like a cover. But there's enough blood in the neighborhood and no one complains so....

3) Would actually seem a more fitting name for Waite (Supreme court justice).

"Redmen" and "Redskin," I do see the complaint. Those absolutely were used as demeaning terms, can't see why they were adopted as team names? Just use a nation name, it's more colorful anyhow.

Westerville South has always been the "Wildcats" to the best of my knowledge. The Wildcat was the mascot of the original Westerville HS.

Not long before any endangered species is taboo too.

Funny, no one has problems with crusaders, saints, or "fighting Irish"

I suppose I could be offended by "Pirates" being stereotyping Hispanic shipment in the Caribbean... I mean, it is my ancestry and all.

Do you think a segment of the LGBT community is offended by the "bear" mascot at some schools?

Were those used as ethnic slurs?

We could debate peoples' sensitivity levels all day but really, you're getting upset because someone else doesn't like some icon that you do or you are indifferent to. If you're indifferent, why whine? If you're upset, then you're really coming from the same POV.

If they were using a drunken down irish icon, you don't think there'd be some upset? I don't know that pirates were ever considered oppressed in anyway but I'm pretty sure we could come up with some demeaning Hispanic imagery that you would feel unfair you had to explain to your kids.

I do "get it." It's not a clear topic. I've seen (and it's not rare) local Mexican restaurants run by Mexicans use images other Mexicans call demeaning, when done by non-Mexicans. The complaints SOMETIMES seem also to me over the top or more about someone trying to puff themselves as opposed to right a wrong but I can still listen to the complaints with reason or without demeaning the pretty legit POV.

If a team/school "changes" their mascot, they really do it at the risk of their own history and donations from disenfranchised alums... It's their business, no? Why should I get upset? Why you?
