NCAAs By The Numbers

I saw my first NCAA championship since wrestling in one back in 1975. Although, disappointed that tOSU couldn't win it all, I drove back home to Columbus with a smile on my face after the Snyder Coon match. The Buckeyes had a season that was razor close to shocking PSU and the wrestling world. Throughout the season we were in the hunt, and still in it until the 184 match of the championship bout. And for a brief moment it looked as if MyMar might pull his magic again. It didn't happen, but what a great ride.

Thanks to Coach Ryan and the great tOSU Buckeyes for a totally entertaining season. I can't wait for next year.

Now, on to the numbers.

By the Numbers
Final Scores

1 PSU 141.5
2 tOSU 133.5
3 IOWA 97
4 MICH 80
4 NCST 80

PSU just missed making the top 10 for highest point total by 1.5 points, finishing with the 11th highest total for a champion. tOSU broke IOWA's 2001 record for the highest number of points scored by the runner-up (125.5) by scoring 133.5. And tOSU broke team records for most AAs (8) and most team points in the NCAAs.

PSU and tOSU combined for the 2nd most combined points for the top two finishers at 275, 8.5 points behind #1 IOWA and #2 OKST in 1997. That was Dan Gable's last year as Iowa's coach, with Iowa breaking the record for most points scored in the NCAAs (170).

Wrestling to Seed
Projected points per seeds (w/o bonus points):
PSU 112
tOSU 125
IOWA 58.5
MICH 68.5
NCST 65

Placement and advancement points (w/o bonus):
PSU 119 (+7, + 6%)
tOSU 108.5 (-16.5, -13%)
IOWA 66.5 (+8, +14%)
MICH 67 (-1.5, -2%)
NCST 60.5 (-4.5, -7%)

Obviously, this is where tOSU lost the championship, as NaTo (3/2), Pletcher (3/4), Hayes (5/DNP) and Moore (1/4) fell short of their seeds. McKenna (4/3) Micah (7/6) and BoJo (6/5) exceeded their seeds. IOWA had the best performance by any of the top 5 teams in this category.

Bonus Points
PSU 26.5
tOSU 24
IOWA 30.5
MICH 11.5
NCST 17

tOSU neutralized PSU perceived bonus advantage by staying with 2.5 of the PSU bonus machine. Shockingly, IOWA bested PSU along with the rest of the field.

Other Numbers of Note:
NaTo, BoJo and Captain America became the first 4x AA trio from one college to conclude their career together.

Captain America became the first 285/HVY to win 3 NCAA titles since Carlton Haselrig (Pittsburgh-Johnstown) in 1989. Nelson, MINN tried for his 3rd title in 2014 and got upended by sophomore Gwiz, NCST. Gwiz tried for his 3rd title in 2016 and got upended by sophomore Captain America. The 285/HVY curse has been broken by Captain America.

Cleveland broke NCAA Wrestling records for highest all session attendance and highest final session attendance.

That's an interesting perspective. Sincerely, no sarcasm. Personally I was placing a lot of the burden on both of them (i.e. 'chokers'). I, like most, had expectations significantly higher for both; as I'm sure most did. Looks like the "seeders" largely nailed it.

Seeders place wrestlers where they deserve to be placed. I thought both Jordans could have placed higher than they did, even though they did beat their seeds. Sometimes wrestling fans forget that the NCAAs is a pretty tough competition and under performance by a wrestler might be over performance by his competitor.

It wouldn't have taken much for tOSU to have pulled this one out. It didn't happen, but the season, right up to the end was great entertainment for Buckeye fans.

Obviously Moore is the biggest choker. 1 seed and can't even get a top 3 finish. Gets completely owned twice by an unranked guy, making zero adjustments in the 2nd match between the two.

Just wondering how many times you AA'ed? And that unranked kid just placed 3rd in the NCAAs, so he's not that bad.

The two biggest shockers and fan favorites both took third and are Ohio boys.
Conel and Wilson. Gratz to them. Hell of a tourney and fun to watch!

The close finish made it interesting to the end. after the disappointment of missing out on a great opportunity at 184 when for a brief moment it looked like Martin was getting a pin or at least a 6-0 lead, it turned into the end of the team race. I just wish it had been to someone other than Nickal. But OSU fans got a little relief when Snyder showed again why he should never be doubted.

Moore seems like he does need time off the mat and he has said as much. I also think he felt the pressure of expectations based off last year and his ranking entering this year. He was an under the radar recruit who has massively over performed relative to his high school career. How may upper weights have his resume after their sophomore year? I think he will come back really strong next year.

We were at Little Caesars Arena in Nov. and it was one of the nicest arenas I've been to in some time. I believed it was 'brand new' in Nov?

One I forgot to mention in my list above
St Edís extends their D1 AA streak to 28 years as Abounader, Mich, places 5th.

It's the specific Ohio State team record. Not team record for the whole NCAA.

If you read my edited post, you'll see it was a good natured, tongue in cheek comment.

You were indeed correct and I was indeed wrong. So much for infallibility!
