#1 vs #8 The official upset prediction thread

I've got Talawanda D3 R10 over Wapakoneta.

I don't think there will be a win for a #8 over a #1 this year.

Per Fantastic50.net, these are the closest #8 vs #1 match-ups:

DII Region 4: #1 Midview by 6 (63%) vs #8 Walsh Jesuit
DVII Region 24: #1 Arlington by 13 (79%) vs #8 Delphos St John's

I'm thinking Walsh will win, DSJ is a real possibility!

Based on history, Tri-Valley would seem susceptible as a one-seed.

Based on opposition, Midview (Walsh Jesuit) and Arlington (Delphos St. John's) are susceptible.

In terms of DSJ, though they have a losing record - and have been outscored 99-0 over the last two weeks - this is a MAC team playing against non-MAC opposition. We know how that normally goes come playoff time.

Somehow, I think that Garfield Heights might be able to give Bedford a game.

I wouldn't be shocked if DSJ beat Arlington.

If they do it would be a playoff first. Can anybody tell me what that is?

I think Bedford drops 40+ and gives up very little. Bedford is the real deal, IMO.

I think TV will be OK. They beat New Philadelphia in the 1st round of last year's playoffs. Some think this TV team may be one of their best ever, and I would argue that this New Philadelphia team is nowhere near as good as last year's.

It certainly wouldn't be the first team with a losing record to win a playoff game, would it? That seems too obvious.

Sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one. Good job.

To my knowledge this DSJ team is the 10th team to qualify for the playoffs with a losing record. The previous 9 all lost in the first round.

Care to take a stab at naming the other 9?

I know Walsh at 3-6 was one of the nine. Their three wins that year all went 9-1 I believe. Might be the only time a 3 win team ever makes the playoffs.

Pretty sure Walsh won their opening-round playoff game. That was 2001 and Walsh went 3-6 with wins over 9-1 and 8-2 squads. Pretty sure all three wins were Div I or II schools as well.

Walsh lost to Youngstown Chaney 13-7 in the first round of the playoffs in 2001. They beat Mayfield, Strongsville and St. V St. M.

A number of people have been picking DSJ over Arlington mostly on name and league recognition.

A couple of footnotes:
Last year DSJ beat Arlington in the playoffs 33-0.

+DSJ was SHUT OUT in 4 of their last 5 games.
+6 of their last 8 games DSJ scored 7 or less.
+both beat Parkway this year. DSJ won 43-12 and arlington win 34-6.

I am hoping DSJ pulls this one out, and if they do then that really does show how week football is in some areas.

Here are a few of them:

Garfield Heights Trinity/4-6 (2013)
Youngstown Ursuline/4-5 (2013)
Waynesfield-Goshen/4-6 (2012)
Cleveland Benedictine/4-5 (2005)
Uniontown Lake/4-6 (2003)

Games to maybe keep an eye on:

R2: #16 Lakota West vs. #1 Centerville (Lakota West has played a tough schedule and Centerville tends to not blow you out)
R4: #8 Walsh Jesuit vs. #1 Midview (Walsh Jesuit is maybe the best #8 in the state)
R20: #8 Wayne Trace vs. #1 Tinora (Rematch of a 40-24 win by Tinora in Week 9)
R24: #8 DSJ vs. #1 Arlington (MAC School which scares everyone)
R25: #8 Danville vs. #1 Shadyside (Danville has played a pretty brutal schedule, playoff tradition)

My upset picks would be:

#8 Walsh Jesuit over #1 Midview
#8 DSJ over #1 Arlington

DSJ isn't what they typically are but they'll make that one a close game. It's a rematch of the 2013 Regional Final that DSJ won 33-0.

Way down year for DSJ, who lost to every average and better MAC team, only beating the bottom-feeders. I expect Arlington to win it this time.
