Whit parks is new fort loramie football coach

WHIT PARKS IS NEW FORT LORAMIE FOOTBALL COACH

34 year head coaching veteran Whit Parks was hired on Monday night as the head football coach at Fort Loramie High School, becoming the school's third head coach in a sport that enters its second decade of varsity play. Parks succeeds Matt Burgbacher who took each of his six Loramie teams to the OHSAA playoffs, appearing in the regional finals in 2009. Parks will not occupy a teaching position.

"We've gotten used to making the playoffs," said Superintendent Dan Holland who headed a six person interview committee. "We believe we've identified the coach who can build upon this foundation." Holland noted the overall quality of the 32 candidate field including seven finalists, "We spoke to a number of head coaches who saw Fort Loramie as a great opportunity. All were impressed that our football boosters have raised well over a million dollars in our short football history, and that we've won a lot of games. Our community supports its schools and their programs."

Parks is no stranger to Fort Loramie and the west-central Ohio areas, having served as head coach at neighboring Minster from 1999-2005. The two traditionally meet on opening night and Parks will visit his former home on Friday August 28 to open the 2015 campaign. He's also very familiar with his new team through his son, Ty, who's already on the Redskins coaching and teaching staffs. The elder Parks attended the majority of Loramie games last fall and also broke down game film. Ty will continue as a football assistant and has also overseen the weight room during the head coaching transition.

Whit's 194-148 career includes stops at Danville, Fredricktown, Mount Vernon, Zanesville, Zanesville Rosecrans, Minster (34-38), and Maysville. Two of his three playoff appearances came at Minster. "I'm anxious to move to Fort Loramie and get started," said the father of three adult children. His wife Beth is a teacher. "We've lived in this area and are anxious to return. We have friends here. Fort Loramie is a great personal and professional opportunity."

The Zanesville resident and Newcomerstown (OH) native will meet his new team this Wednesday afternoon. He will then be introduced to the community that night in a public 6:30pm high school gymnasium event.

Fort Loramie continues to play football in the Northwest Central Conference along with Lehman Catholic (Sidney) and others. In 2017 the Redskins will become a football-only member of the Cross County Conference. They compete in OHSAA Division seven. Their conference affiliation for other sports continues to be the Shelby County League.

It will be good to see Whit and Beth back in the area. I only wish Paul was still around to be part of it.
