I heard Yanni on my daughters phone this morning and clearly Laurel when they played in on The Five today. 2 panelists on The Five heard Yanni, 3 heard Laurel.

Just listened to the link embedded on this here. Clearly Laurel. Never a hint of Yanny.

People's frequency filters are different and can even change dramatically over age. Words that were one thing last year are something different, this year. Depends upon both the sensor (the ear) and the cognition (brain processing based upon experience and environment).

If interested in that sort of thing, of interest might be the McGurk Effect.

I have 40% hear loss in my left ear and 20% in the right. I can't ear crickets chirp with my left ear. So the high freq thing is BS.

Through my speakers it's garbled and I can hear both if I concentrate on high or low sounds. On my headphones it's only Laurel.

You presume others talk business at parties because that's all you have, I'll bet.

your turn.

I tried to share an anecdote, no different than anyone else here when they are talking what they know. I appreciate the insight, particular investments and vacations. I might even challenge it if I've any experience but I certainly don't knock it. To each their own insecurities.

For you.

For me it's a scientific excuse. "Sorry dear, I misheard you. All those high frequencies..., says so in this textbook."

"Seasoned and refined ears" = ears that are damaged and not able to hear higher frequencies as well.

I figured it may be the speakers, but wife and I listened to it at same time and heard different words. After she said Laurel multiple times out loud, I started hearing laurel instead of Yanni. Then I'd play it again and hear Yanni. She never heard yanny. wierd wild wacky stuff.

She now thinks it explains our mis-communications...glad I brought it up...

More buzzkill?
- Perception isn’t reality
- We couldn’t survive as a species if it were and magic shows would suck.

Think of echoes. An echo is the same sound, traveling and reaching the ears at different times. But there are billions of reflections of that sound, reaching the ear. Yet we “perceive” only one, or in the case of an echo, a couple. Now it gets weird. Same thing is happening with your eyes. In computer terms, there is so much information coming in, that if the sensors (eyes, ears…) didn't filter (mostly frequency, phase and amplitude) and a level of processing before the cognitive parts of the brain didn’t occur, you’d lock. Like a two year old, who gets frustrated because their sensors have matured enough to bring in more information but their processor isn’t up to speed enough to filter out what it doesn’t need.

Simply, we have sensors to “focus” and favor parts of the information. We have nerve, chemical and initial brain filters to cut down the data, sometimes leaving out important stuff (that it might not have left out on a different day or time). We have pattern recognizers to match the data to things seen and done before, to narrow down the possibilities. If it’s “new” then the brain can fart trying to figure out where to put it. And finally we have the cognitive. Interpretation of the patterns and this can and does change based upon experiences, fatigue, day, time, mood…. drugs ( mentioned for certain members of the DB ).

It’s still weirder, how extremely powerful the brain is. Someone mentioned hitting a fastball. Light travels so fast, we can rule out (mostly) its effects. But it takes very measurable time for information to travel from the sensors, along the nerves, to the pattern recognizers and then be perceived. Base only on that timeline, the ball would be in or very nearly in the catcher’s mitt before the batter even realized it had left the pitcher’s hand. Even if it were only half way, the batter would perceive that it had just left the pitcher’s hand, so why swing? The batter performs the ultimate act of time-travel: anticipation. Based upon? Still being studied. Patterns the batter has picked up. The pitcher’s body movement. Stance. Studied throwing pattern…. Best not to think about it, and that’s exactly what the batter is doing. Not thinking about it. It’s “subconscious.”

Ever catch something that was falling off the table, something you impressed yourself doing? If you’d waited to “perceive” that thing falling, you’d have never caught it.

Crazy stuff. I studied it, doing military and NASA contracts, mostly. Too much going on, under stress, how do you “limit” the data arriving to the person that needs to make real-time, life-dependent decisions upon it, with a very, very small chance of leaving out something important or worse, including something not part of the original information?

My function was to write algorithms and code to allow computers to mimic that middle portion of the chain I mentioned: the data reducers and pattern recognizers. I would take the data from the sensors, then implement digitally, algorithms, some around centuries waiting for computers fast enough to implement them, some recent or original or modified by the team and then feed the results to an "AI," or directly to an operator.

Do you think you can use all this to figure out who the Zodiac Killer is?
