Yanny vs Laurel

What do you hear, Yanny or laurel. It is 100% Yanny imo. This is so baffling to me

Only ever heard Laurel. I can't pick out any of the Y N or second Y sounds at all. No clue how anyone hears Yanny.

Same here. 25 and younger generally equals Yanny, more seasoned and refined ears hear Laurel.

I heard it was Linda Evans.

Okay, couldn't resist. Check this video out, saved me the trouble of doing it myself. The "spectral analyzer" of a DAW like Adobe Audition is great for looking at the different frequencies of speech.

My perception is that it is clearly Laurel, but that the first one has a subtle difference to it. I can hear a hint of a "Y" sound at the very beginning of the first utterance, but not nearly enough to mask "Laurel".

I wondered if the creator blended two recordings together at different frequencies. After listening, I tend to think there may be some subtleties added which mask some frequencies and give the illusion of a second word. As Joaquin Andujar might say, one word says it all: youneverknow.

I surmise that those who perceive "Yanni" do so because:

- they are younger and/or still hear higher frequencies better than most adults 30 and older. I'm 59, and I know I've lost some of my upper-register hearing, especially when I listen to music.

- there are some harmonic sounds in those upper freqs (see video below from the 2:00 mark) that sound different than Laurel - maybe "Yerrel"?

- they are listening on cheap speakers/headphones/earbuds that reproduce mostly higher freqs.

At the 4:22 mark of that video I finally heard Yanny. Sounded like a woman saying it. That is the only time I heard it.

It's weird. At first all I could hear was Yanny, but now I pretty much can't hear Yanny at all.

Heard "Yanni" definitively on WKYC news in morning.

Heard "Laurel" definitively on AM850 later on in morning.

I would wager you will hear either one based on the frequency it is broadcast on.

When I listen for them, I hear both. Initially, I just heard Yanni.

Just found this- "What you hear is based on the bass levels, so if your speakers or headphones have better bass, you’re more likely to hear laurel. "

Heard Yanni this morning on TV and I was to the side of the TV in the bathroom. Heard Laurel on the radio in the car heading to work.

Like Clark said I think it depends on the quality of the speakers you heard it on and maybe even your relationship to the speakers.

Part of my job at one time had to do with perception and freq analysis. I only hear "laurel," but then I was already biased by the thread title. I'd like to hear it with some of the high end frequencies attenuated or accentuated. It might change my perception.

People's frequency filters are different and can even change dramatically over age. Words that were one thing last year are something different, this year. Depends upon both the sensor (the ear) and the cognition (brain processing based upon experience and environment).

If interested in that sort of thing, of interest might be the McGurk Effect.
