Remembering Kent State May 4th, 1970

Quote:
On May 4th, 1970, Ohio National Guard troops opened fire on Kent State students protesting the invasion of Cambodia, the escalation of the Vietnam War - and the presence of the guard on campus. In this documentary from 2000, WKSU takes a look at the personal stories and larger lessons that grew from May 4, 1970.

As a kid seeing that on the news, I was just dumb-founded. I had no concept of the ongoing protests and paid no attention to news casts beyond the space program previously. The gasps from the adults got my attention from the back of the room, and I was as riveted as they were.

It had a real effect on my willingness to trust non-family adults going forward, and especially authority and "leadership". I'm sure my dad's subsequent comments following these events shaped that, but I recall nothing specific.

I went up to KSU last night for Dan Rather's speech. Lots of cliches and advice, almost like a graduation speech. Not as much historical reference and stories from his career as I had hoped.

I don't think people under 50 have any perspective as to what the May 4th shootings mean in history and how it changed the public perception of the war.

After the protesters were shut down at Kent some of them headed to Akron's campus to start again. The university closed and cancelled the yearly May Day weekend festivities to prevent trouble.

I'd assume the traveling rabble-rousers stayed out of the line of fire. Were the four killed and nine wounded all KSU students ?

Yes. All the killed and wounded were students in good standing at KSU.

Of those who were shot, the closest student was 71' from the soldiers. Another was 110' away. Two were 225' away. These were all wounded.

The 4 who were killed were from 265' to 390' away when shot.

The rest of the wounded were 300'-750' away.

Of course, all were unarmed.

The thing I remember was that the girl in the picture kneeling on the ground over a victim turned out to be a run away from Florida.

A very sad day in our history. If I remember right, most of those shot, were on their way to classes, or watching from afar, and not even part of the demonstration. I was absolutely amazed at some of the hateful comments made, those wishing that many more should have been killed. I lived in Kent in 71 and 72, a very interesting time, and a time in my life I will always remember.

As I was there, you might imagine that I would remember the date, but I never do. Every year it's "Oh yeah, that was today."

An interesting observation I made when reading an article contemporary to the incident that I read some twenty years ago (I wish I could find the article now). That article criticized the National Guard for using M1 garrands (30-6 rifles from WWII and Korea) rather than the smaller caliber M16. Funny how that argument has been flipped on its head now when AR15s, the civilian version of the M16, are so vilified now as scary looking "assault rifles".

It was a very sad day for Ohio and the nation. I find a lot of fault, all the way around. I remember petitions in church for prayers for all involved and for our nation.

Schroeder was fairly close when shot, according to this drawing. Doesn't seem to match written accounts. Not sure which is correct. Shot walking to class. Eagle scout. Had applied for ROTC. The others more than a building away. Oddly, three were Jewish. One was from NY. The others: Cleveland, Lorain and Youngstown.

So sad when you think that the Guardsmen were the same age as the students.

Bad times in our country, but I feel that our divisions are becoming just as wide now.

Interesting that two of those killed were there technically as protestors, while the other two just were walking to get to their classes.

I watched the news of this through the lens of an 11 year-old mind. A year or two later, a Readers Digest issue featured in their condensed book section a detailed look at the KSU shootings and the protests that led up to them. As I think back, the book leaned a bit conservative but did its best to look at the victims objectively.

I recall a lot of attention focused on the rabble-rousers doing the damage, and got the impression the student body had just lost their minds. At the time, I don't know if anyone had identified them as non-students. traveling from campus to campus for the sole purpose of stirring the pot.
