First surprise of the morning: Centerville's Yariel Soto is a DNS in the Boys' Pentathlon. Hmmm. He did get 2nd in the Emerging Elite PV yesterday. He's still scheduled for the boys' LJ at 12pm today.

Taylor Ewert just beat all the girls...AND BOYS...at the NBNI mile walk a few minutes ago. Her winning time of 6:34.53 was 6 seconds off her national record set at Millrose last month, but she still be fellow SW Ohioan Sean Blaze by over 7 seconds, who won the boys' 1 Mile walk by 0.02 seconds!

Lakota East qualifies both Heath & Clark in the girls' 60m to the semis tomorrow. They stand 14th & 15th overall, so they'll need to drop well down into the low 7.40s to make the final, if not the 7.30s.

None of the 4x200s qualified thru. Lincoln's G/B 4x2 teams no-showed.

On a non-Ohio note, Morgan Smalls out of NC moved to No. 2 All-Time in the Girls High Jump with her 6' 3 1/4" leap, moving ahead of the 6' 3" leap of Lisa Bernhagen (1983) and trailing only Vashti Cunningham's 6' 6 1/4" leap in 2016. I've got T&F New's picture of Bernhagen clearing 6' 3" at the Simplot Games of '83.

Tre Young ties for 2nd (15' 3 3/4") in the unseeded boys' pole vault with Brock Shellhaas placing 9th with 14' 10".

Have other things to attend to. Will return around 4:30

Well, that took longer than expected, but here are the updates since I was gone:

Boys' LJ - Both Del'Mario Hairston & Yariel Soto ( he did decide to long jump after DNS in the Pentathlon) over 22' placing 25th & 19th, respectively.

Girls 4x1 Mile - Hiliard Davidson's team places 2nd with a great 20:43.12 for an average of 5:10.2 per leg.

Girls' LJ - Soph Paige Floriea manages a fine 18' 9 1/4", within 6" of her PR.

Boys' SP - Nolan Landis improves his seasonal best to 61' 1 1/2" for 4th place. Michael Shoaf was down almost 5' on his best with his 10th place 58' 3 3/4"

Boys' 400m (prelims) - Evan Matthews squeezes into Sunday's finals on time with his 48.78 win in Heat #2

Boys' HJ - Cameron Stine cleared 6' 5" in a tie for 12th

Girls' 200m (prelims) - Unfortunately, Serena Clark's legal PR 24.25 win in Heat #6 was only good enough for 11th overall, not enough for tomorrow's final.

Girls' 4x800m - Thomas Worthington comes thru in 3rd place with their outstanding 9:09.21. Kings ran a fine 9:20.19 for 11th overall in Section 2

Additional Updates from Saturday:

Boys' PV - Seeded: Dalton Shepler (Vandalia Butler) essentially matched his PR by clearing 5.02m (16' 5 1/2") for 4th place overall. With one year to go, maybe Jake Blankenship's Ohio record is under threat...Dalton has vaulted higher than Jake did at this point in his junior year.

Boy's 4x800m - Kings' boys ran a great 7:53.88 for 12th place

Attached below is the summary of Saturday's Championship events for Ohio athletes.

Updates thru the Girls' Mile (Unseeded)

Girls' WT - Emma Kowalski & Kaila Barr just miss finals with their 9th & 10th place finishes, respectively. Both were within a foot of their personal bests.

Girls' PV (Unseeded) - Morgan England placed 7th in the unseeded division with her 12' 2 1/2" clearance.

Boys' TJ - Del'Mario Hairston had another competition over 14m with his 46' 6 3/4" jump - currently 7th in the ongoing event.

Girls' 800m (unseeded) - Carina Napoleon finished with a 8th place finish in 2:11.87 in unseeded division. Maddie Ulom was close behind in 11th with her fine 2:12.44

Girls' 60m (semis) - Kaylyn Heath finished the best in 14th place of the semis with her 7.61. Serena Clark was a DNS.

Girls' Mile (unseeded) - Samantha Bush finished in a fine 4:58.25 for 7th in the unseeded division.

More updates to come about 1:30pm.

The most anticipated race of the meet will be the fast section of the girls 800 at 2:49 PM, featuring junior Athing Mu in her first race since breaking the American record in the 600m at the USATF championships. Sammy Watson's high school record(2:01.78) would seem to be in serious peril. Mu's 1:23.57 for the 600 suggests she should also have a reasonable shot at breaking 2:00.

Very true.

The girls 2 Mile should be interesting between Tuohy...throw in Ewert in there as an unknown in a fast race.

Beavercreek's Taylor Ewert moves to #3 on the all-time Ohio girls' 2 Mile list (indoor) with her 4th place 10:19.14 personal best.

Twinsburg's girls' 4x400m place 7th overall with their fine 3:55.94 clocking.

Boys' TJ - Hairston placed 16th overall.
Boys' WT is underway.

ATHING MU - LOSES! Holy Smokes, Batman, few saw that one coming! Stevens Point (WI) Roisin Willis edges out Athing, 2:05.70 to 2:05.86! Wow!

She paid for a quick opening 200, and exhibit A that the 600 isnt the 800. Still undoubtedly a fantastic talent with many fast 800's ahead of her.

I didn't think a 28.5, 59.5 opener was all that fast for her given she's already a 52+ 400m talent.

That said, however, there are some athletes whose best distance is between the 400 and 800. Fast, but not fast enough. Strong, but not strong enough. She might fall into that category.

Anyone remember that the HS from which Roisin Willis is from, Stevens Point, WI, is also the alma mater of one Suzy Favor Hamilton?

For a girl with a 2:03.98 PR it was fast, especially that 28.5. 2:01 was there had the pacing been a bit more conservative, but she's still just a junior so will definitely be well situated to go after it again next year when she's a year stronger, and a year more seasoned.

It will be interesting to see what she does outdoor, especially if she races the senior USATF championships.

SPASH is also the alma mater of Chris Solinsky, former American record holder at 10,000m, and of Curt Clausen, multi-time olympian and former American record holder in the 50k walk.

Tremendous tradition.

One of my favorite cross country books over last few years is this:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...animal-keepers

It says an awful lot about the transformative power of a team, in this case Steven's Point squad from 1985.
