Abby Steiner - News

For the track & field purists among us, you'll all be glad to learn that Ms. Steiner has decided for put her soccer cleats on the shelf and is now focusing her athletic life on the track. For good.

This is probably the best move for Abby. Her ceiling is much higher in track and she will have better opportunities for a post-collegiate career in the sport if that is something she chooses to pursue. Soccer is very hard on the body, particularly a woman's body, with a very high incidence of orthopedic injuries. The chances of soccer being a cause to a curtailed track career are too great. Undoubtedly this all went into the decision making process.

Another factor in the decision may have been the status of the Kentucky women's soccer program. It is, quite frankly, a program in disarray. The manner in which the current coach came to power was looked at by many as an auspice of where the program was heading. Sure enough, that seems to have come to fruition. The team finished 5-14 last season and 1-9 in conference play. At least three players, and possibly another two, are transferring to other schools. The incoming recruiting class, while having some talented players, is thin. Within the program there is a lot of distrust and uncertainty. Some have described the environment as "toxic." Unless the team has a miracle turnaround this upcoming fall, with that being an almost near impossibility, the current coach will most likely be fired at the conclusion of the season.

Given all circumstances this is a great decision for Steiner and one that should serve her well as a student-athlete and beyond. Good luck to her.

She is simply enjoying track more now, and is wise enough to go where her heart is. She has had a good first indoor season, the the NCAA meet still to go.

To me, that's all that counts at the end of the day. We can all sit on this forum and act like either XC or track and field is the end all, be all for everyone, but that's not the case if the person doing the sport isn't passionate about it.

Plenty of kids out there who play soccer on bad teams at their HS. It's easy to tell them they should come run XC or some other fall sport, but if they love to play soccer, why shouldn't they play as long as they love it?

Well said.

If a lot more coaches of all sports had this attitude there would be a lot more positive experiences for athletes.
