Wasn't there a house on Cleves Warsaw (maybe just a few houses up from Covedale and not to far down from Glenway) that used to put on a little Halloween horror story each year on Halloween night only? They would take small groups into the front halway and put on a 5-10 minute horror skit? I remember going when I was a little kid.

Anyone.......

Does any one remember Elder closing in the fall of 75 or 76 for energy conservation due to the oil crisis. I remember going in every so often for assignments. As I recall we did more work being off school than we would have in school!

I was there those years but don't remember them closing because of the the oil crisis. I do remember being out of school for what seems like a month each year for blizzards in winter of 76 and the winter of 77.

The only thing I remember them doing for the energy crisis was turning down the heat to the bare minimum, just enough heat to keep the pipes from freezing. We had to wear coats all day in school. On the bright side, with coats on it was easier to sneak food into class!

I have not been over to the West Side in a while but here goes. Anyone out there remember.......

"Officer Redmon"?

Indoor festivals at St. Dominics

I remember when some of the subdivisions were being built off of Mt. Alverno in the late 70's.

Saturdays at Phillips

Dante's!!

LaRosas on Boudinot before the Italian Inn side was built

Trashy movies at the Dent. "THE SHERRIFS OFFICE HAS RULED THAT NO ONE WILL BE ADMITTED WITHOUT PROOF OF LEGAL AGE."

The Bridgetown Inn up near Glenway & Race by the old LaRosa's, complete with "Naked Lady" pictures behind the bar. It was owned by a guy named Mario I think. Everyone swore he was mobbed up!!

What was the little Bowling Alley on Race right past Glenway. It had about 12 lanes.

Playing baseball up at Harvest Home.

Shooting Pool at Western Bowl

Danny's Den, TJ's and of couse Eddie's

Julio's Pizza at Greenwell and Delhi

Gravy Fries with friends at Delhi Chili in the early A.M.

Delshire being a nice area

Schuller's Reception Halls. We used to show up at random reception's uninvited. Now I hear that a movie is coming out with that same theme.

When "Stormy's" in Cheviot was a family bar.

Weekend fight nights at the Hofbrau

Daily Donuts up on the Delhi. I swear I got food poisoning there 2 or 3 times.

Turtle sundays at Greaters followed by Globe Records and House of Adam at Western Hills Plaza

Sight & Sound on Queen City

Was it Habigs or Window Garden that was the place to go for Saurbraten?

My girlfriend(at the time) getting Fried Chicken Livers at Walt's.

Trying to get a beer at The Harvest Home Festival

"West Side Story" in Monfort Heights

Ollie's Trolley? Down on River Road close to Anderson Ferry I think.

Twin Fair at Delhi Plaza and the Post Office at Hader Hardware.

For the Diamond Oaks people......

PARTIES AT DAVE"S LOUNGE!!!!

A few things (forgive me if they have been discussed)...

Van Ludens on Delhi

The popcorn machine and the little bowling alley game in DelFair Bowl --> I used to fake stomach aches to go to my mom's wed afternoon bowling league

Burger Chef and Jeff on Delhi (Hardee's took over it...not sure what is there now)

Central Hardware

Po Foks

Golfing all day at Dunham/Woodlawn

Western Roller-rama skating parties (moonlight skates)

Overhill Swimclub

Sandy's

Thinking driving from Delhi to Visitation for games was like going to Indiana

The old Gap in Western Hills Plaza

Sledding in Rapid Run Park

King Kwick

Kolping Society dances and drunken nights (not really westside...except for me and my friends)

Price Hill Chili when it was in one building. Next door was that Italian place whose name I believe started with a 'B".

How about this concept: walking 1/2 mile to St Teresa along Glenway ave from North Overlook to serve the 6:00am mass.....alone. No parents, buddies or brothers. Who would dare to do that now?

I recall that energy shortage Elder Alum referred to. I was at St Teresa's at the time and we were off for some time and I remember all that snow too.

Also we used to actually shovel snow in the winter and cut grass in the summer to earn money. Do you see kids doing that now?

How about Crookshank ave when it used to be primarily industrial and seemed to be real scary with the city dump and railroad tracks.

Best Buy and Richard's (aka Dicks) is located where Swallens used to be. Was there a trailer place behind it or something?

Also, someone older might be able to resolve this one, but I remember Frisch's being in it's current location, complete with carport, since the late 60's.

Frisch's was where the new one was and next door along the glenway and ferguson rd connector was Roy Rogers

There was a driving range there? That's wild.

I was talking to my uncle last night about all of the things I have read on here. He told me that there used to be another train track that ran up the hill and went right where Gamble Nippert YMCA is now. He said that there was some kind of machine that they had to maually turn the trains around. I guess it was used just to get things up the hill.

First the place was called Bella Napoli

Secondly, a kid can still can walk that same stretch alone at that time and be fine. I live near that strecth and it is not as bad as you are painting it to be.

If you come up Glenway from 8th and State and you go past the big curve right past 8th and state you can see one of the concrete columns that used to hold up the track.

I remember going in there, to buy records and other assorted goodies . The place was called Woodstock. BTW this is a great thread, one of the best I have ever read on Yappi, Great job to all!!!

those pictures are awesome! Kind of a shame it is gone when you look at how cool it looked. Think about what kind of a tourist attraction that would have been today if it were still there. Just imagine a nice restaurant at the top of the incline, with a view down into the city.

Now you're talking about MY TURF! Me and my best friend used to take a variety of colored markers, and we would "forge" the stamp they used to designate that you were of legal age.

One other time, we got a keg of beer, and since we had never tapped one before, we weren't pushing the tap down and turning it fast enough, so we kept getting sprayed with beer, and then someone from inside hollered out that they were calling the cops, so we got out of there, went over to St. Bart's, tried to tap again, same thing, again somebody yells they're calling the cops, so we finally got it tapped behind Brentwood Bowling alley, and eventually went back over to the parking lot and sold $.25 beers to whoever wanted to buy them. Good times!

The truth is I had know idea where Kolping Society was located until I was in college. I was drunk coming and going to those dances. Thinking about thursday Kolping nights makes me wonder how I am still alive today. We were stupid stupid stupid kids.

The trailer park was located behind Swallens. The Frisch's was in front of where Phillips swim club is before they moved across the street. This is probably well before any of our time.

Probably early to mid 70's. It used to be a Baskin Robbins ice cream shop before then.
