I think these games are crazy. Why risk injury? Being named to the team should be recognition enough.

What risk of injury are you in? Bring a ring for your hemorrhoids. Some of the best football efforts I've seen were kids from less known places having opportunity to show their skills against the recruited and the name. I doubt many of these kids achieved what they have living life afraid of "risk." My preference is to enjoy that last bow for many of these kids and families and fans.

Exactly!

Practically, it's normal to fixate on the story of the one star maybe that got hurt but I've seen few field injuries over the years. I've seen more on a college rec floor, where the skill level is not the same. It's a heck of an opportunity for players to compete with others of their or higher skill level. For our local all-star game, I imagine it's the first time many of these city, suburban and rural kids ever met, let alone play with and against others from those areas. It's encouraging to me, seeing how well they get along. The sport and competition seems to transcend at least for a bit, social differences.

I understand there may be an upside but I don't see where it outweighs the possible downside. These kids can't be in "football shape".

I was involved in an All Star game in the late 70's in Western Pa. I came out unscathed but one kid on my team and another on the opposing team had serious knee injuries. I believe one had a D1 ride and never played as a result. My son had an opportunity a couple years ago the HC prefers that his guys not play and I agreed.

By definition, isn't every upside outweighed by a "possible" downside? Players and families make their choices, I don't know that there is anyone forcing them to participate? Me personally? I have no respect for a college coach that forbids their recruits from participating, none. That IMO DOES cross the "ownership" line that is such a controversy now. Players and families I think after 6 or more years of football, are well informed on the risks taken by walking out the front door.

Have all-star games had their day? Again I'd say "no." The local one, and we're not exactly top dog in the state of football, seems to have great participation and crowds. Probably helps that it's well run, the coaches respected.

I think if you already KNOW you have a scholarship, it's stupid to play in an all-star game. But if you're still on the fringe looking for either a walk-on spot or a D3 school or maybe you've played your last game and know you won't be suiting up in college but want to have one more game under the lights, I don't see the issue at all.

Shouldn't you know where you are going to college by now? I guess I can see if you want to play just for the heck of it but if you are playing college at any level I don't see the point. Agree to disagree I guess but I've seen first hand how it can backfire.
