Early 2018-19 GMC Outlook (before transfers)

With the league champion Princeton Vikings bowing out in the Regional semi-finals vs. Wayne the GMC season ends as it did last year with Mason losing to Moeller in the Regional semi's at Wright State. 2nd place Oak Hills was a District Runner-up for the 2nd consecutive year and Lakota East returned to UD Arena after a years absence. Overall a pretty good showing for the GMC in the 17-18 season.

To get our loyal GMC posters looking ahead to the 18-19 season here is a breakdown of returning points for each team and the top returning varsity players for each school:

#1--Hamilton 47.8 ppg --returns 4 starters Robinson @17.8, Howard @17.5, Reid @5.9 and Pennington @ 3.7

#2--Colerain 35.1 ppg--returns Jones @11.1, Hatter @8.9, Wiley @8.6, and Wright @ 4.1

#3--Mason 34.2 ppg--returns Long @12.1, Howard @6.7, Cooper @4.4

#4--Fairfield 31.3 ppg--returns Turner @9.3, Brown @6.0, Caldwell @5.5, English @5.4

#5--Lakota East 26.1 ppg--returns Weiland @12.0, Mangold @5.9, Johnston @3.3, Metts @1.8, Johnson @1.8

#6--Lakota West 25.1 ppg--returns McCorkle @7.1, Oehler @5.7, Combs @5.5

#7--Sycamore 24.0 ppg--returns Yuskewich @12.4, Niblack @7.4

#8--Middletown 21.7 ppg--returns Jones @8.9, Stallworth @5.5, Powell @4.4

#9--Oak Hills 20.9 ppg--returns Moeller @9.4, Berkemeier @7.3, Hayes @4.2

#10--Princeton 19.1 ppg--returns Davis @5.7, Kennedy @4.3, Ward @3.7, Henry @2.2

The league definitely has no teams that are in single digit returning points like Middletown was following the 2016-17 season. Also it's ironic that the top 2 teams from this past season (Princeton and Oak Hills) return the fewest points, but also had the two best JV teams from this past season, so they each have talent ready to move up.

That said Hamilton should be the pre-season favorite with 47.8 points returning and 4 starters as well--will the Big Blue commit to guard well enough to win a title. Colerain showed improvement with 7 wins and return enough points to be a factor next season. Mason, Fairfield, East, Oak Hills, and Princeton had some strong seniors graduate, but also return 3 or more solid players and good JV talent moving up to be in the thick of the GMC hunt. West, Sycamore, and Middletown will be toward the bottom 3 of the league, but not far behind teams in the middle of the pack--the 2018-19 GMC should be a year of no team having a for-sure win.

Can't wait til next December!!

How did last year's "returning points" list compare to the final standings?

Returning Points from 2016-17 GMC Stats (not order of finish):
1) Colerain 44.9-- ended 4-12
2) Princeton 40.0--ended 16-0
3) East 35.1---ended 11-5
4) Hamilton 27.9---ended 7-9
5) Sycamore 26.6---ended 7-9
6) Mason 20.4---ended 11-5
7) West 20.3---ended 2-14
8) Oak Hills 16.1---ended 12-4
9) Fairfield 16.0---ended 5-11
10) Middletown 5.8--ended 5-11 (did not factor in EJ Williams return)

Most on Yappi felt that Princeton, East, Mason, Oak Hills and Hamilton were the top 5 and it did shake out that way--Sycamore tied Hamilton for 5th place at 7-9. Oak Hills clearly over-achieved at 12-4 based on only 16.1 ppg returning compared to East at 11-5 and 35.1 returning ppg--Mason 11-5 and 20.4 ppg was right there with OH and East.

Obviously Colerain went from 1 GMC win to 4 due to players returning at a big #, but still not top-level talent but getting better--EJ Williams unexpected return gave Middletown a fighting chance as they notched 5 GMC wins which tied them with Fairfield--West was not expected to be very good, but just 2-14 in last place was below expectations with 20 points returning.

Returning PPG is only one method to project for the next season, but it does give some indicators of how good a team can be the next year.

Does the Hamilton job opening up make the Big Blue more/less of a pre-season favorite to win the GMC title in 18-19 season? Comments--

We might be able to have a better prediction when we hear who gets the job. The way this year went, there has to be an improvement. My apologies for being Mr. Obvious.

Good Comet...before transfers...
We know Mason won't have any, in all likelihood neither will most others excluding Middletown. I guess FF and HHS are possible as they have had a few over the years. Respect the schools that play with their own.

Agreed Rick--my gut feeling in April is that the GMC tightens up next year from top to bottom based on the returning players each school has right now--all could change if players leave/ or new ones come in--time will tell. Whoever gets the Hamilton job will have the "target" on their back with four returning starters.

Hamilton could be a very good team. The rest of the GMC teams will have new pieces. Is this the season Colerain is treated like a Varsity team? Timing could be right.

Despite the losses, I would expect Princeton to still be a favorite. They return six players with decent varsity experience and had a dominant JV team. I have no reason to think he won't, but I hope Darrion Henry continues with basketball as he's racking up tons of high level football offers.

oxat I didn't follow the JV that often this year. Do they have any size coming in from the JV. I do remember the Jones kid having some dunks and athletic plays but got hurt or something

I followed the 2017-18 JV season somewhat (wish they posted records on GMC site), but Princeton (good JV squad) and Oak Hills (17-5 overall) had the best records in league play----look for Ryan Fleming (Dan Fleming's son) OH JV coach to be in the mix for the Hamilton job. Lakota East, Hamilton and Mason also had decent JV teams in league play from what I remember.

Didn't see any JV games, I recall looking at some rosters and I think many schools had some freshman playing JV. A few more than usual.
