New OSU basketball coach

Would love to see Jackson's Kyle Young follow the former Butler coach to OSU -- anyone think this will happen?

Players choose schools because of the relationship built with the head coach and staff. However, why would you leave Butler a team that is going to win, a great atmosphere for every home game and go to OSU? They are in a rebuilding phase and it could be a little while before they are back where everyone wants them to be. The Schott will more than likely be empty. They have to rebuild their roster from the ground up.

However, if he really liked Holtman, then yes, it is a possibility.

New OSU basketball coach

Sources say KY is probably OSU bound depending on what Butler does with their hire and if they promote from within.

Thad's recruiting class for 17 was pretty good.

Butler had their best recruiting class ever with KY as the centerpiece.

If he goes to OSU they have the top 2 ranked players in Ohio for 2017. The turnaround for them won't be as long as some people think

Which program has a higher potential ceiling over the next 4 years? More national coverage? Plus the coach he likes. Let's not forget, Butler does not have a coach.

Really surprised he left Butler- Big East basketball is fantastic. Nate Fowler (Moeller '15) has been doing well at Butler too.

Why go to OSU :
No. 1 and most important he tripled his salary.
No.2 : OSU has been to two final 4's in the last 10 years including a title game so a good coach can win and win a lot at OSU.
No.3 : It does not take long to turn a program around a couple of good recruits plus last year was the 1st year Thad Matta failed to win at least 20 games in a season.
What I do not understand is why Smith gave him such a long term contract if Holtmann does not work out your paying his salary for the next 8 years. Would it not be better to give more money upfront and a shorter contract?

Definitely doesn't take long to turn a program around.

Kentucky does it every year!

My take on it is to get a coach of the quality they were after it was going to take a long term contract as no quality coach wants to hope he can turn it around in a year or two, it may take four or more.

Has Holtman made any move to keep or let go any of last years staff?

With the hiring of LaVall Jordan as the new Butler head coach, it appears that all three of Chris Holtmann’s Butler assistants will join him at Ohio State.

All three of those assistants – Ryan Pedon, Mike Schrage and Terry Johnson – have changed their Twitter bios to reflect they are now coaching at OSU. The university has not officially finished the vetting and hiring process, although those seem to be mere formalities.

One player keeping a close eye on that is Massillon (Ohio) Jackson forward Kyle Young, who signed with Butler in the 2017 recruiting class. He was recruited heavily by Pedon and picked Butler over Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson and Purdue.

I would imagine that Holtman will try to retain student assistant coach Greg Oden.

Not trying to ruffle any feathers here...watched Young play in the State Finals. I know everyone is entitled to a bad game but he did not play D1 like when it mattered most for his team. But again that was 1 game, I hope you are right and this kid is awesome!

That was a tough game for Kyle for sure. He brought the house down with his play in the semis against St Ed and he seems to have a great balance of an inside outside game. He's a pretty good ball handler for a big guy, can jump and plays solid defense. With everything he's had to overcome, I'm rooting for him to succeed.

I think the post you're responding to was asking about Young, not Holtmann. To your second point, Butler has been in 2 Final Fours in the last 10 years also, losing in 2 title games. I think your first point is definitely the most important.

Raymo, you aren't kidding he is working hard. He was left with a Hot Mess and has worked wonders just to stop the bleeding. I am excited what he will be able to do after a few years of recruiting.
