For the kids with the potential to play high D1 or make the NBA, I don't see this as an issue. They need to do what they have to do to make it. It's always been this way with the truly elite players.

The problem is, there are so many average Joes (kids that will never play past high school), that think AAU is their platform as well. They think they're going to "get recognized" but the reality is, they're high school talents, and they mimic the actions of the truly gifted basketball studs.

The elite have always done their own thing because they're....elite. If you're not, just focus on your season, train hard, get better, and make your school team better. You're not getting recognized.

Select baseball and basketball have been around forever. If you're not on a top team, you're just paying for social hour.

These tournaments have expanded because people are getting rich....not because there's a high influx of basketball and baseball studs.

RadioDave's really on top of things. It's a wonder why his blog hasn't taken off. First, most of these students aren't really paying much at all if it's a legit Prep School with their own campus including dorm and cafeteria. Other students may pay full tuition but the school uses athletic teams as their advertising. "Students" receive assistance based on "needs"/ability. Nothing against the rules because they don't under state guidelines.

Second, a lot of college coaches either suggest a boarder line recruit go the prep route or encourage a verbal to go that route to further their game. Out of all sports, basketball has the least amount of community loyalty.

Prep schools also offer different graduation requirements and NO state testing! The state legislature in OHio recently eliminated the alternative pathways to graduation in Ohio. There will be a large number of students and athletes effected by this change. A year in prep school eliminates that issue and virtually guarantees graduation, allowing the athlete to concentrate on the ACT!
