Shawn Contos Named Head Coach at Toledo St. Johns Jesuit

Copied from SJJ Website:

St. John's Jesuit High School & Academy Director of Athletics, Bob Ronai, has announced Shawn Contos as Head Wrestling Coach. After most recently holding the position of Wrestling Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Penn State University, the 1993 graduate of SJJ is excited to return to his alma mater and lead the wrestling program. "I cannot tell you how honored I am to be back at my alma mater. It is truly a dream come true to come home," said Contos.

While at St. John's, Coach Contos was the first 4-time City League Champion. He also was a 3-time state qualifier and Catholic Invitational Tournament (CIT) champion.

In recent years, Coach Contos qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trails in 2012 and was ranked in the Top 10 in the country. He was also a 4-time USA All-American wrestler, Freestyle Junior National Champion and Greco-Roman Junior National Champion.

Prior to coaching at Penn State, he was the Assistant Wrestling Coach at Iowa State University helping the team to a Big 12 Championship and 3rd place in the NCAA.

Ronai believes, "Coach Contos brings an incredible amount to the table for SJJ with his knowledge, experience and work ethic."

Coach Contos will also serve as the Assistant Strength Coach, assisting not only wrestlers but all St. John's Jesuit student-athletes.

Welcome home, Coach Contos!

I believe Shawn and Kevin are brothers - Kevin Contos at Genoa would be Shawn’s nephew

That is correct they are brothers.
That does surprise me because Eric Cubberly was coaching their and doing his camps a month ago.

Eric Cubberly took a position with a company that will not allow him the time necessary to be a head coach. He will be a Volunteer Assistant Coach at Clay HS when time permits.

Congrats to Shawn as the new head coach at TSJ he will do great. We look forward to seeing him and competing against his teams in the TRAC.

Good article. Kind of surprised Justin Wilcox from Oak Hills (‘98 I think) didn’t make the top 10.

I wonder how St. Johns is going about building their program. As 1 of 4 parochial schools in Toledo (Central Catholic, Cardinal Stritch, and St. Francis are the others) it will not be easy to build it from the ground up. With the Toledo Public Schools having virtually no wrestling base either, it is going to be even more difficult. Central Catholic has dropped off substantially and I believe only had 6-8 varsity wrestlers last year. Stritch no longer has a team (they had won a couple of team state championships in the past - as has St. Francis. Not sure if St. Francis has a team any longer either - or is about the same as Central with half a dozen varsity wrestlers. The only point is there is a lot less talent to pick from and I don't believe there is much going on with wrestling at many of the Catholic grade schools. Probably makes the coaches at Springfield, Anthony Wayne, and possibly even Wauseon and Delta a little nervous with the commitment to build a program that St. Johns is showing by hiring Cubberly and then Contos.

Good for them. Competition is always a good thing for everyone.

I know Shawn has big plans on how to develop and grow the team. He will have a ton of support at the school. Good Luck Shawn!
