Will the U.S. Go To A Cashless Society?

Will the U.S. go to a cashless society?

Quote:
For years, small businesses have asked customers to pay cash, set credit card minimums, or added a surcharge onto card transactions, in an effort to defray the premiums imposed by companies like Mastercard and Visa. Now, an increasing number of businesses are doing the opposite. Head out of Slate’s offices for lunch and you might wind up at Dos Toros, a local burrito minichain; for coffee you might pick Devoción, a Colombian-born coffeehouse with an airy storefront. In either case, you’d be confronted with the same demand: Pay with plastic.

Stores are eliminating cash registers and coin rolls in pursuit of what they say is a safer, more streamlined payment process—and one that most of their customers want to use anyway. At Dos Toros, co-founder Leo Kremer said that more than half of the shop’s customers used cash when its first location opened in Manhattan in 2009. By the beginning of this year, that number had fallen to just 15 percent. At that point, the various hassles of dealing with cash—employee training, banking fees, armored-truck pickups, and the occasional robbery—outweighed the cost of credit card fees on those transactions. The shift wound up being more or less revenue-neutral, Kremer said, but saved a lot of time and trouble. Dos Toros’ New York locations have been fully cash-free since the winter.

Sounds like a logical step just before Revelation 13:17 becomes a reality. Plastic is actually just a temporary phase.

Not in the foreseeable future. Heck they can't even agree to get rid of the penny.

I only carry plastic. Most of the time they credit card companies give me a % back on usage of their card so why not?

What gets me is that there are still a lot of folks that have a stash of "mattress money" in case of an emergency. A cop told me that most intelligent home burglars not only go right to the jewelry but also check a couple key areas for a stash of cash: mattresses, sock drawer, freezer, and kitchen jars are at the top of their list.

Sweden got to the point where it was nearly a 100% cashless society. Now the Swedes are having serious second thoughts about this. With cash, the government controls the amount of money in circulation and how the economy functions. In Sweden by going plastic, the economy was in the hands of six or seven banks. So who do you trust more, the government or the large banks, and think about what Wells Fargo was up to.

Just eliminate accepting personal checks at stores and we'll all be better off.

I had to wait at the cash register yesterday for a woman to transfer money, via phone of course, to her debit card account so she could finish paying for her groceries. A check would have been much quicker.

Wells Fargo: the hits just keep on coming.

Count me in. I may use cash once a year.

I never use a debit card. I use credit cards most everywhere I can if over 10 bucks, and I pay the cards off every month. Pay cash any place it can get me a better price.

The untaxed underground economy is exactly why they want to kill cash.

There's nothing for the government to gain from plastic unless they legalize everything in the "underground" economy.

My wife and i visited our daughter a few days ago, and she wanted to let us know she had found the greatest spot to hide a spare key to her house that no one would ever find it.

It only took us about two seconds to find it, under the lone rock three feet from the entry door. She had no idea that was a common hiding place.

Rare cash user here too. All CC, which I pay off completely each month. Lots of free airline tix over the years that way.

I generally use cash to pay for parking or babysitters and whatnot. I think there are some apps and such I could use to eliminate even some of that.

I was Executor of my mom's estate and about 6 months before she passed she took me to her pantry and showed me the fake can of soup that had $10,000 in it.

Good thing she told me because my brother swept all of those cans into a bag and took them to the local food pantry.

Us too. If someone gets my CC number, which has happened a few times, the most I am liable for is $50, and each time I was not charged for any of the fraudulent purchases.

If someone gets my debit number (which I never use) they can empty my account.

Use someone else’s money for free, and get spiffs on top of it ? It’s a no-brainer.

Anyone that joins the Pentagon Federal Credit Union can get a VISA that kicks back 5% of gasoline, 3% of groceries, and 1% of everything else in a STATEMENT CREDIT! One can buy Lowes, restaurant, or Amazon gift cards at Giant Eagle and get $0.10/gallon off for every $50 spent and get the same 3% bump as for a package of steaks. Debit card my azz.
