MTV Turns 37 Years Old

Quote:
On this day in 1981, MTV: Music Television goes on the air for the first time ever, with the words (spoken by one of MTV’s creators, John Lack): “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star” was the first music video to air on the new cable television channel, which initially was available only to households in parts of New Jersey. MTV went on to revolutionize the music industry and become an influential source of pop culture and entertainment in the United States and other parts of the world, including Europe, Asia and Latin America, which all have MTV-branded channels.

If MTV had stuck with strictly playing music videos, they'd be completely dead by now. It was actually a smart decision to switch focus to original programming.

integrity is more important to me than $$$ but I guess this wusification of America and soccer mom mentality is all about selling out to their god the mighty dollar as they flourish in their materialistic world while ignoring accountability in turn for excuses.

"Living is easy with eyes closed
Misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone
But it all works out
It doesn't matter much to me

I mean it must be high or low
That is you can't, you know, tune in
But it's all right
That is, I think, it's not too bad"

A socialist who had an $800 million net worth. Who preached love & peace but beat up women and ignored his children.

Solid citation.

That is what he became but not what he was.
It truly amazes me that some of these bands that preach love and peace cannot get along with each other.... but it is not the man it is the words, it is in the words man, wake up.

Any evil leader anywhere is good with words. That's why they're leader.

The words are just an actor's play. It's the actions. MTV is 37 years old in a very competitive fly-by-night business. They're doing something right, regardless it's culturally relevant anymore.

I didn't see it then so I had to take a "look and listen".

The eighties were a blur for me. Come to think of it, so were the nineties, the naughts and, now, the teens!

It's all good.

More impressive than the FOS hair was the working of ‘Aurora Borealis’ into the lyrics.

But before them, there was Gary Numan:

I remember sitting at my buddies house and watching MTV's kick off. He lived outside the city and had access to cable earlier than I did. Those of us in the city (Cincinnati), didn't have cable available until 1984. I also remember watching Night Flight, late on Friday or Saturday night on the USA network.

Some good old videos I remember from back then:

Barnes & Barnes - Fish heads
EBN-OZN - A,E,I,O,U and sometimes Y
Wall of Voodoo - Mexican Radio
Duran Duran - Girls on Film
Golden Earring - Twilight Zone
Ronnie James Dio - Holy Diver
Judas Priest - Breaking the Law
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast

I could go on and on, but it was sure cool to see all that stuff on MTV back then, when it was commercial-free and just played videos with VJ's Alan Hunter, Mark Goodman, Martha Quinn, Nina Blackwood and J.J. Jackson.

Rock n Jock was the best thing to come out of MTV followed by Beavis n Butthead.

Just think, without Gary Numan there would be no Nine Inch Nails!

Never got to see NIN live, but in 1990, saw Reznor with Revco at The Empire in Cleveland, along with openers Skatenigs and The Mentors. Most hilariously-unruly show I ever saw.

This interview was filmed at The Empire on the day NIN was headlining there (two days before the Revco show I saw). Interesting to hear what Reznor had to say about MTV back then.

Thanks for that vid....

I agree with his comments to a point and it is sad that sponsors dictate what can be seen and I am for one totally against censorship. There is nothing wrong with a warning before hand and I still laugh about when those things popped up on album covers.... that turned that album into a must have.... !!!!!

He was right, the SIN video never made it to MTV.

For those who may be interested into what actually went on behind the scenes at MTV as it relates to the 5 original VJ's you may want to check out the book, "VJ, The Unplugged Adventures of MTV's First Wave" by Gavin Edwards.

Four of the original five VJ's, (J.J. Jackson died of a heart attack on St. Patrick's Day in 2004) share dozens of interesting stories from their days and nights at MTV.

Pretty interesting stuff . I can remember how the advent of MTV served as a night-light in our household, pretty much 24/7 for the years of 1981 thru 1987 known as the "early years". MTV definitely had an impact on my purchase of vinyl during the 80's.

MTV has lived in spite of my actions. I have never watch MTV for longer than a minute or two and then turn to something better to watch. The fact that MTV has turned 37 is not my fault. If it was up to me they would have been gone many many years ago.
