Why am I not surprised that Massillon backed out of its contract? And my personal congrats to Mentor for picking up Ed's. Anticipate a round robin for the three best teams in the Cleveland area.

Massillon didn't back out. They fulfilled a two year contract and didn't want to continue

Also Mentor didn't have many choices in who to schedule. Publics avoid us like we are a private school.

Next year Mentor will eliminate 2 more elementary schools and 1 middle school (Ridge)

Shore vs Memorial will now be the battle of Mentor at the middle school level

Tough way to start the season. The last eight games are winnable, but Mentor will almost certainly start 0-2 considering the hits to graduation they are taking. Most of the offense has graduated. Two key lineman return (one with offers from most major programs, another with multiple MAC offers) as well as Luke Floriea. That is about it on offense. The team was heavily reliant on seniors in 2017. At the skill positions, Mentor should have enough talent at RB and WR - especially if Floriea stays in the slot. Trubisky, Saginario, Gallo, and Gefert (depending on which side of the ball he plays) are potential starters that could make an impact. Current sophomore Varney Spansel looked pretty good in garbage duty this season. I think he has a great shot to be the primary RB. But with Mentor, the success of the season will ride on the play of the QB. Current freshman Ian Kipp will be the favorite unless Triv elects to go with the speedy Floriea.

Defensively, Noah Potter will return at defensive end. He should have another strong season. A few other key defensive players return - Paglio, Gorka, Bischof, and Pedley. Last year's playoffs showed glimpses of an actual defense. Maybe this side of the ball will start to improve next season? That would be nice.

Mentor is losing a lot of great players but don’t under estimate the kids coming up! Some obvious studs in Senior class coming up and the Junior class has done nothing but win on all levels, undefeated the last 2 seasons in JV and Freshman. They will start 1-1 at very least, not afraid to say 2-0!

I know it's early, but does anyone have any updates on who are the early favorites to replace some of the seniors that graduated? There's a lot of holes to fill, but I'm excited already with Jacoby committing to OSU and Potter getting offers from everyone. This may be incorrect, but here's what I have so far:

QB - Kipp/Floriea/Baird (anyone else in the mix?)
RB - Spansel/Saginario
WR - Floriea (I would like to see him stay at WR unless he's the best QB on the roster)
WR - Gallo
WR - Trubisky
WR - Gefert (? - I'm not sure if WR or FS is his best position)
LT - Jacoby
LG - Samac
C - ?
RG - ?
RT - ?

Key losses: Taturunas, McDougall, Edmund, Shea, Hartmann, Baird, Kleinhenz, Schonauer, Kidner, Churney - Last year may have been the best O-Line Mentor has ever had. QB/RB/WR were solid and will be tough to replace.

DE - Potter
NT - ?
DE - Pedley (DE or OLB?)
OLB - Benz
ILB - Bischof
ILB - Adams
OLB - Paglio (OLB or S?)
SS - ? (Paglio?)
FS - ? (Gefert?)
CB - Gorka
CB - ? (Kipp played here as a Freshman - he may play here if he's not QB or WR)

Key Losses: Brey, Garcar, Laganke, DiFranco

Student enrollment has been going down some and it made more sense to combine some schools and restructure

Seem to be pretty decent. I only follow varsity football. I'm not a parent

Most of the varsity talent came from shore or memorial but ridge has had standouts. I'd think the 2 middle schools would only get stronger by splitting talent 2 ways instead of 3.

The only scrimmage on Arbiter right now is the middle one at home against Jackson on 8/10. They have been doing the multiple team scrimmage involving Kenston for a few years now, so I expect that to continue. The other team or two that joins has changed over the years. No clue about third scrimmage. Last year they scrambled for an out of state team. Not sure what they will get at this point. With Massillon off the regular season schedule, I would like to see a return with them as the final scrimmage.

That's a good point on Massillon. Yeah I check arbiter often as you know but sometimes people here hear things. Especially parents

And half our regular season schedule isn't on arbiter for some reason

The nice thing with three middle schools was that more kids received plenty of playing time before they went to the high school. Ridge was always solid but lacked the numbers for depth.

Pickerington Ridgeview 7th Grade team which is the feeder Junior High for Pickerington Central had 55 players this year. The coaches try to play everybody but it is really difficult especially when the clock is always rolling after half time.

If we divided the 55 players into 3 teams, we would have been the best 3 teams in the league. The games are so lopsided and not really any fun for either team. The games get so out of hand that the refs start calling holding on every play to bring back touchdowns. We had 5 straight TD runs called back for holding and finally the ref let the 6th one stand.

It is so bad that some players are considering playing in the Columbus City League next year rather than play for the Junior High. We are hoping that we get to play at least one different/competitive team next year. That is why I asked about how good your Junior High teams are.

I think I see , C-Bus public schools don't have MS programs so they go to the Columbus city run program, that's probably it

I am not sure when the N-H game is, but some of it could be due to college (or college-related) obligations

At QB itís either Florea or Kipp, probably Kipp but I know Florea really wants to play QB.

WR, donít rule out Nolan Vernon and Justin Luke, both going to be Juniors.

On the Oline, looking at Jacoby and Samac at the tackles. Three preseason leaders for the other 3 spots are probably Byron Floyd (Junior) Platt (Senior) and Sam Williams (Senior). Floyd can play all 5 positions on the line and is probably best sized for Center at 6í1/2 240. However, Williams is undersized and will probably play Center. Platt has some injury issues so letís hope he can get and stay healthy. So probably Floyd and Platt at the guards.

Nose tackle, Frank Schmidt (Junior) not sure who else would rotate in.

Thatís all I got right now..

This is good for Cleveland HSFB.

Now ditch glenville and put a GCL team on the schedule. Worst case scenario youíre still making the playoffs at 7-3.

They already play Ed's and Ignatius, and there are usually 2 or 3 playoff caliber teams in their conference schedule. Glenville is a perfect game for them, garunteed 7 wins and a good test of athleticism.

If itís really St Ignatius, St Edward and Mentor then none of your conferences games should even be an afterthought.

Over the weekend, lineman Nick Samac committed to Michigan State. According to the News-Herald, Samac was a 6'2, 225-pound lineman hoping to play varsity as a junior just 12 months ago. Since January, he piled up tons of college offers and committed to a top 25 program in the nation. Great for him! Samac joins fellow seniors Noah Potter (Ohio State) and Ryan Jacoby (Ohio State) in committing to the Big Ten. Mentor has some serious talent on the lines for 2018.
