Week 10: Lake Catholic (3-6) @ Walsh Jesuit (6-3)

LC hits the road to end the season looking to play spoiler and keep Walsh out of the postseason. The Warriors are coming off a tough loss to Benedictine 26-7 in Bedford. The Cougars defeated Padua 31-26 last Friday evening in Mentor. Looks like Walsh needs a win against LC to qualify for the playoffs in Region 4. Let's hope we see a good game on Halloween night as this series has been the most competitive series LC has had with any other opponent.

Lake Catholic and Walsh Jesuit have played 24 times with the Cougars holding a 13-11 advantage in the series. Walsh defeated LC last year 24-14 in Mentor.

Kickoff is at 7:00 Friday night in Cuyahoga Falls.

I didn't realize how close this series was.
This is definitely a must win for Walsh after the disappointing loss to Benedictine. According to Drew Pasteur Walsh has a 99% chance of making the playoffs with a win. Hopefully the game will be injury free for both teams

A must win for LC too. At 3-6, they still have a shot at the #8 seed with a win and alot of help.

More like a miracle, but I like your attitude.

Go Cougars!

Like I mentioned earlier, this has been a very competitive series between these 2 schools. The 2003 regular season game was an unbelievable game with the Cougars going for 2 after a late TD run to tie the game. That was the last year LC played at Memorial Junior High.

Another great game was the playoff game the following season. We crushed Walsh in the regular season only to lose when it counted in the playoffs. Walsh won the playoff game 31-28 out at Twinsburg. Chambers caught a TD pass with like 50 seconds to go in the game to take the lead. That was Stanzi's junior season I believe.

I will give the nod to Walsh in this one. While WJ is not the most athletic team they do have a strong running game and front 7 on defense; I can see Lake Catholic wearing down as the game progresses.

You have to go all the way back to 1984-89.

Good luck Cougars.

It happens, believe me Benny fans can relate.

It just goes to show that there are many factors as to why a catholic program rises and falls. The folks down in Wayne County would have you believe it is only about open enrollment but many factors go into a success of a football program. Lake will be back it is just when and what will the program look like once back.

Lake needs three of the five teams ahead of them to lose along with an LC win to get in. Not quite a miracle but the odds are not in their favor.

3-6 has been disappointing until you realize they have the sixth hardest schedule in the state and the five above them are all DI. Week 1 Strongsville loss continues to hurt 9 weeks later.

So you're saying we're 3-6 because of the schedule? I'm going to assume you've not been to many LC games this season. The Cougars were beating Strongsville at halftime. Along with the SVSM game and Hoban game, those were 3 winnable games. You certainly make a valid point about the schedule as we play the toughest schedule out of any Division III team, but it's not like we don't belong on the field with these teams. It may not show it, but there is a lot of talent on this team and a lot of young talent. I've been saying since the 2012 season ended, the 2015 team can be very special. It will be interesting to see how next year unfolds. I will tell you this...the schedule is not going to get any easier anytime soon. In fact, the schedule is exactly the same next season except for Strongsville.

The defense has been terrible for 3 straight years. IMO, that's where it starts. Again, there is a ton of talent in the sophomore and junior classes so it will be interesting to see how 2015 unfolds. Also, the 7th and 8th grade Gabes classes are loaded with talent. It will be interesting to see as well where all those kids decide to go.

Halftime scores for all LC games this season...

Week 1: LC 21 Strongsville 10....lost 32-31

Week 2: LC 7 McDowell 7....win 13-10

Week 3: SVSM 17 LC 13....lost 23-13

Week 4: Ursuline 24 LC 14....lost 39-14

Week 5: Mooney 14 LC 0....lost 31-6

Week 6: LC 14 NDCL 14....win 38-28

Week 7: LC 14 Hoban 14....lost 28-21

Week 8: Benedictine 7 LC 2....lost 29-15

Week 9: LC 14 Padua 6....win 31-26

My point is we have been in every game in the 1st half. The 30 point clock running rule has never happened to LC this season. Not once. There were plenty of opportunities to win games this season.

Lake's team this year could have beaten Hoban. A mis-timed fumble and a great int in the end zone took away 2 TD's from LC.

Lake is 3-6 because they have no weak links on their schedule, except for the weak conference opponent each year.

Please don't talk about the skills of 7th and 8th grade kids since those can change so much once they all grow up.

And Lake's 9th grade team really had problems this year, while NDCL's freshman team was really good (and big).

That is one of the keys for Lake Catholic moving forward, to retain area CYO players. This year's Lake Freshmen team is not very good and there was some decent CYO players coming out of parishes that usually dump into Lake Catholic yet they went elsewhere. Also of note, the top 2 QBs on varsity and I believe the best Freshmen QB at Iggy all come from the Lake Catholic footprint schools.

LC traditionally has never done that great at the freshman level.

So you are also saying we need to lighten up the schedule?

LC has not had a real QB since 2009 in Ronyak. Then you gotta go back to Stanzi and Petro. There are some very good QB's living in Lake County and they are all not playing at Mentor.

Walsh has a new field this year. Did they happen to get more stands for the visiting side?

They did not.

New field is very nice. Getting in and out of new field (ie traffic) still sucks if they have any type of crowd.

Looks like CVCA is at home on Friday so that will not help the cause.

The bleachers and other improvements will be done the next two years. An access road to old route 8 is part of the plans

I think MLC pulls the upset and possibly knocks Walsh out of the playoffs. I have seen Walsh and MLC play twice. If MLC can avoid stupid penalties the game is close at least.

I have seen both play too, I just cannot see Lake moving the ball on the Walsh defense unless they can air it out. Not so sure the Lake pass attack has it in them...

Honestly, I'm more concerned about the Cougar defense being able to stop the bruising Walsh run game.

Don't forget about the ensuing kickoff after the 2pt conversion. I believe it hit a WJ player after being poorly kicked (no intention of it being onside) and bounced right into the hands of a Cougar, ball game. The 04 playoff game was a heartbreaker. Go Lake finish strong!

The Walsh defense has been good except for two games - Canisius and Benedictine. Their offense could be so much better. They have several good athletes who are way under utilized and they only run about 5 plays. This game will most likely be a hard hitting, low scoring game. 17 points should be enough for either team to win it.

I don't think this game will be game over in the second half against Walsh. They had Hoban. A KO return called back, penalties which caused Hoban to get first downs and a fumble returned 80+ yards for a TD killed their playoff hopes.

I hope next year they play Lake Catholic football and are back in the hunt for the state title. This game will be a tough one.
We shall see. Something tells me the Cougars will come ready to play this Friday night. I don't think they will be getting blown out. Maybe I'm wrong.

Go Cougars

Thats a good point lchsman, Walsh ground game is formidable and the weather forecast portends a running game evening. Second half of Hoban/MLC Hoban ran the ball pretty well. My experience over the years Walsh tends to choke and MLC rises to the occassion. We'll see soon enough.
