Centerville Girls Lost

When was the last time the Centerville girls lost a race?

No talk about this. I am pretty sure they haven't lost since the state meet in 2013. That is 4+ years without a loss in Ohio. Has to be one of the longest streaks for a girls team ever.

Just a 1 point loss. Beavercreek won, but also just as impressive was #3 place team Hilliard Davidson girls were just a couple of points back too.

With losing, they still ran very impressive times:
Bucher 17:17
Walsh 18:07
Kilroy- 18:24
Lowe- 19:03
Whitehead-19:07

I'm not surprised by loss. With Ewert's extraordinary abilities leading the way, Beavercreek has been coming on. Just take a gander back thru their races of the last couple years.

In a smaller field Centerville will probably beat Beevercreek, because of the 40 second gap between their #5 runners she usually runs in the 20 minute range. At the State Meet that would be a 35 to 40 (19:40’s) point spread. The team winner will probably score in the low 120’s, that 40 points by BC’s fifth runner will be too much to overcome. The other top team Hilliard Davidson will only have an advantage over Centerville’s4 and 5 runners by only a few seconds. That should not be enough to win. IMHO. Throw all these stats out the window is someone gets hurt or just has a sub par day....

1 Mason 76 7+8+14+18+29 (31+39) 0:35 1-5 Split | 19:11 Avg
2 Beavercreek 107 10+11+20+22+44 (45+58) 0:45 1-5 Split | 19:19 Avg
3 Ursuline Academy 123 2+4+16+32+69 (91+97) 1:42 1-5 Split | 19:15 Avg
4 Centerville 126 1+6+25+35+59 (65+84) 1:32 1-5 Split | 19:18 Avg

I did some research and this is the last time I could find Centerville losing to an Ohio team. 2013 state meet in which they finished 4th.

They then went to Nike that year and again lost to Mason. Mason was the last team to beat them almost 5 years ago. Pretty impressive record.

8 Mason 260 24+30+38+77+91 (107) 1:20 1-5 Split | 20:39 Avg
10 Centerville 275 21+35+67+70+82 (86+129) 1:08 1-5 Split | 20:42 Avg

Research failed me.
2014 Regional title they lost was the most recent loss. I believe this was the infamous Regional that went from 50 and cold at district race to high 80's and windy at the regional. This regional was taxing on many kids, if I recall correctly. Still one awesome streak.

1 Mason 56 2+7+9+18+20 (24+52) 1:19 1-5 Split | 19:21 Avg
2 Centerville 75 5+14+16+19+21 (23+42) 0:48 1-5 Split | 19:37 Avg

What about last fall at districts when they ran their JVs and placed 5th (top 8 advanced) or the 2016 district when they did the same thing and placed 3rd or the 2015 district where they did the same thing and placed 5th?

To add to the "I just have to get used to the fact that most people don't watch a race like I do", I have to finally give in and accept that times matter more to people than place. When I read that Centerville lost, but they ran good times,,,My head nearly exploded... That mentality escapes me, but I'll have to realize that is where the sport is at. It's not about place anymore, it's about time and fast courses. Not my cup of tea, but I still love the sport.

When I watched my sons' races the coach would often ask me how we did because he knew I put a lot of effort into observing and noting the places of our team and our closest competition and did a pretty good job of making some quick calculations. I don't ever remember us discussing times. I am in your camp on this topic.

Are you and CC609 related? You just spout off things that aren't even close to being true.

4+ years?!

2016 Centerville Saturday Night Lights...

1 Woodridge 133 14-25-26-27-41(118)(121)
2 Centerville 142 13-16-24-29-60(92)(103)

Low score wins in CC right?

Nice research. I knew it would be hard for them to go 4 years without losing.

There's no defense in racing. You can't control how another team performs. No one is setting world records in high school. What you can control (to some extent) is if you're improving and racing well. Times help demonstrate that a lot more than place for most schools. Placing second or top 5 or top 10 at big invitationals is not the same as losing. The first or last mentality is harmful to the participants and the sport.

Centerville has a giant team and has been dominant in D1 over the last 4 or 5 years. It's impressive that they ran well and BC still beat them. That's what "lost but ran good times" means. They still didn't get the first place trophy, and no one is suggesting they should. It just means that BC beat a really good team.

"Where the sport is at" is an all-time high in participation and athleticism (especially for girls). The nature of cross country is such that everyone can celebrate their accomplishments, even if they aren't on the one team out of 30 that wins that weekend's invite. An uncoordinated basketball player might work all year-round to improve, but never see the court and not know if his work paid off. But in running, it's right there in black and white. Times matter.
