Number of schools in each District

The southeast district has 8 teams in it. While in central Ohio, there are 3 districts each with 17 teams. Can someone explain why this is? Shouldn't all districts be pretty much the same size, give or take a team or 2?

8 teams in a districts is really small. Must be nice to get a free ride to the regional

Look at the qualifiers as they do not get as many out to regionals.

It's not a free ride. It might be easier, but it's not free. Kind of like it's usually an easier ride if you're DII or DIII than if you're DI.

As long as we want representation from the different geographic regions of Ohio and from schools of different sizes, there will be no system that is "fair" to everyone.... Of course, the biggest hurdle to creating a fair system would simply getting agreement on what "fair" means in this context.

Madman. 100% agree with you.

Fair by definition in track is that top 4 individuals or relays qualify to the regional meet. Unless otherwise noted with smaller districts.

Unless OHSAA would open it up to a times/distance standard and just skip the district meet, then this is our definition of fair.
But OHSAA has no desire to have the best 16-18 athletes in each event. They want a geographical distribution of fair at the state meet.

Just looked it up on SE district website for D1 and 4 still make it out to regionals. Girls 9 boys 8. So yes they do have twice the chance to make it to regionals.

Girls Schools:
Athens,Chillicothe,Logan, Marietta. (4)East District Schools:Carrollton,Dover, New Philadelphia, Tri-Valley, Zanesville (5).
[Four (4) qualifiers to regional.]
Boys Schools:Athens, Chillicothe,Logan, Marietta.(4) East District Schoolsover, New Philadelphia, Tri-Valley, Zanesville. (4)
[Four (4) qualifiers to regional.

The only option would be to do like they do in CC that have unbalanced representation at regioinals/state.

There are athletes in the Central Region and SW Ohio, specifically girls middle distance runners, who will not make it to the State Meet, while runners with slower times from other regions will be there. 5:02 1600 did not make it out of Pick North last year. There was a sub 5:00 1600 that did not make it out of SW Ohio. Is that fair?

The southeast district in D1 sometimes has enough schools (8) to have their own district. Sometimes they have not and have been folded into the central. It is what it is. They have to go through the regional like everyone else in order to get to the state meet.

In 2016 all four 800 qualifiers from one district in the central made the state meet podium, and there were two other kids who might have made the podium who didn't make it out. (Odd fact, three of those six became teammates at MIT the next year.) In 2012 a girl from our district ran 5:03 and did not make it to the regional. There were times when I was a soccer coach when the team in the state semi-final in D1 out of the SW had been soundly thrashed by one of the teams in the central or NE that did not make it to the final four. There was also a year when the Pickerington regional had just about the slowest sprint times in the 100 and 200 and then dominated in the state finals. (Bad head winds at Pickerington.) Unfair things happen every year. I think it's great to acknowledge them. In 2012 I was standing with a bunch of other coaches watching that 1600 and one of them said "Oh man, one of these girls is gonna run a 5:03 and not get out." We were all amazed. But that is going to happen in some events every season.

Yes because the rules stated before the meet that the top 4 qualified.

The rules did not change.

Fair and even are two different vocabulary words.

Have to agree with Euclid here...." The top 4 qualify" and everyone knows that ahead of time. IMO that is the definition of fair.

That's a nice sentiment and all, but doesn't look at the whole picture. The manner in which it is decided matters. When there are unbalanced districts in the numbers of schools, it becomes a bit silly. Someone earlier mentioned that you are only allowed to run slower than 3 people. That fails to consider also that some will have to run faster than 29 people, while others may only have to run faster than 12.
