Adult Basketball League

I'm thinking of starting an adult basketball league. I've run a youth league for 4 years and have been asked to start an adult league. Just curious how the games are played at this level.

How much to join a league?
Do you join as a team or as an individual?
How is the clock run during the game? Running clock? Regular stops?
Do you buy your own insurance?
And the most important, how aggressive do the games get? Any fights?

Not sure it's a headache worth taking on.

Aggression depends a lot on the age group. I know younger guys that have played in leagues in Toledo and Dayton that were very, very competitive. If you want to avoid the headaches that come with that, I'd suggest making it a 30 and over league. Maybe have 1-2 spots per team for younger players.

I'm not sure about costs or insurance, but I think in most leagues participants register their own teams. For clock, I'd guess either 20 minute halves with running clock and stoppages in the last minute of each half, or 14 minute halves with traditional stoppages.

Big difference between 25 and 45, attitude-wise, in a lot of cases. Good officials will make or break an adult league, I would think. Charging enough to have two refs will make a difference in both the character of the games and in the players that show up. I would start there, because the guys that coordinate blocks of refs will no doubt have seen things run a few ways.

I've played in adult leagues at different YMCAs around Dayton area. The price for the one I play in now was $425/team. It's a nice combination of young and older guys. I'm in my late 30's and enjoy playing. You have the option to join as a team or individual and they put all individuals on a team, if there is enough. It's two 20 minute halves with running clock until last 2 minutes of second half.

In my experience - you'll have more headaches with the adults than you ever had with the kids.

Doesn't having this board give you enough headaches LOL

I just go to an open gym one night a week. 20-50 yr olds show up, usually enough for two courts.

Cost $2/week.

Good enough for me, but yea...def a big diff between 25 adn 40 yr olds!

I play on Wednesday nights at my parish. It's free. We have anywhere from 15-25 show up each week. Must belong to church.
