Too cold?

Factoring in player safety, when is it too cold to play?

Yappi will become famous soon enough
Interesting this was brought up today. I just got a message that the OHSAA doesn't have a temperature rule. Basically, it's up to the schools (or leagues) to decide.

Personally, under 40 is miserable but even up to 50 degrees can be bad depending on the amount of wind and lack of sunshine. Worst game I've ever been to was 45 degrees and steady 25 MPH winds. Neither side could throw a strike and the game went on forever.

There are teaming playing now as I am typing this post and it is 33 degrees with snow, it is a league game so they need to get it in. The AD of one of the teams just sent this out when a paraent questioned if this was the right call for girls well being:

"Because of Mother Nature, we’ll pretty much be playing a game whenever the weather permits, (meaning no rain).

From the first day we’re eligible to play on March 24 to the start of sectionals on May 5 gives us 35 non-Sundays to play 27 games so we’re packing them in."

So I say why not start the season 1 week later and cut back on the regular season games? Or better yet how about playing on Sundays?

+1

The key would be to get a decent amount of states to sign up for this new calendar as the travel teams/clubs/JO folks will push back because it would disrupt their calendar. They would belly ache for a year or two but they will figure out a new schedule quickly as there are too many $s for them not to get it right.
