Boardman (2-0) @ Jackson (2-0)

Both teams once again are off to pretty good starts. Jackson has wins over Akron East and Mayfield, while the Spartans have wins over Youngstown East and Howland. Probably an edge to Jackson with the opponent difficulty so far but this will tell us a lot about both teams. Each has a highly touted QB at the helm with lots of talent to go around and this one has the makings to be a shootout...

With the exception of the 97 season, the two teams have played annually since 1995, spanning the time before and after Boardman was a member of the Federal League. Other than Fitch, no team has been a constant on Boardman's schedule since 1997.

Jackson leads the all-time series 11-10

1995: Boardman 31-0
1996: Boardman 13-6
1998: Jackson 24-10
1999: Boardman 40-23
2000: Jackson 10-7
2001: Boardman 22-19
2002: Jackson 21-13
2003: Jackson 35-2
2004: Jackson 14-0
2005: Jackson 15-13
2006: Jackson 28-16
2007: Boardman 28-0
2008: Jackson 20-16
2009: Boardman 41-7
2010: Boardman 41-6
2011: Boardman 42-21
2012: Jackson 38-20
2013: Jackson 35-28
2014: Boardman 17-14
2015: Boardman 20-10
2016: Jackson 21-14

From the other thread, edited...

Despite having played each other for 20+ years, Jackson and Boardman are very rarely good at the same time. This looks to possibly change this year. In 1998, both were their respective conference co-champions. In 2001, both were very strong, with Jackson winning the Fed and making the second round of the playoffs, and Boardman likewise getting to the postseason but running into state semi-finalist WGH. After that, they both kind of dropped off the radar a little bit, with Boardman having a brief spurt of success where they made the playoffs a couple times and grabbed their sole Federal League Championship, while Jackson went through the wilderness for almost 10 years until the end of the Balderson era/beginning of the Budd era. The last four games have all been decided by 10 points or less, with the teams splitting the decisions 2-2, and each making the playoffs once.

My early take is that this will come down to the trenches (as usual) but perhaps more importantly who steps up around Pallotta and O'Horo. Seems like Childers has been a strong back and the Ieraci (some WR)/Jennings combination at tailback has been impressive for the Spartans. O'Horo threw for 220 yards in the first half last night but outside of one completion the second half offense was all on the ground for the Spartans.

The biggest questions are: can Jackson put together a four-quarter defensive performance (especially against a talented QB), and can Boardman hang overall when the competition level goes up?

I'm feeling a shootout too, which is out-of-character for this game -- mostly it's a low/medium scoring affair, unless one team is really bad.

Jackson found their kicker during the Boardman game last year, we probably can't kick a FG beyond 25-30 yards which will give us a disadvantage. Punting should be fine, but we've only seen that once. Boardman struggled defending Howland's 2 returners and they were starting between the 35 and midfield (or more) every series...

Upon catching the TV replay of Boardman-Howland, I will revise my opinion of the defense. I think Howland had only 1 or 2 first downs the entire second half, and no big plays...Jackson will still have plenty of opportunities to exploit them though. The other reason this could be a shootout is that both teams are playing up-tempo on offense this year. Last year's game was leisurely paced to say the least lol.

Last Q, does the 6'7'', 450 pounder play somewhere?

Boardman is more of an air attack than ground attack these days. Really because of O'Horo being a special QB and some nice weapons around him. Have about 5-6 guys who can get open and catch the ball. But the Jennings/Ieraci combo is a nice RB duo to pound with. Can Boardman hang in the trenches ? They average about 250-255 across the line so we'll see. Love that these schools still get together year after year.

Yes he's used on the defensive line.

Is O'Horo considered a duel threat QB or more of a traditional pocket passer?

This will be a huge test for our db's

This year it seems like he prefers to throw much more but he will run and do a good job of it when he takes off. The whole Howland game (BSTN scoreboard feed) is already up on youtube but I believe the full WKBN broadcast will be as well. May already be on their website.

O'Horo is a pure passer but has a good knack of running with the ball and will keep it when he needs to. Kid is a good wrestler so he's tough. Doesn't shy away from contact.

Usually would be up on Youtube by now, but here's the TV broadcast of the Howland-Boardman game for those interested.

That big kid is a definite liability for the Bears. Against East, a few times the Dragons didn't even block him because he wasn't going to move to make a play, so they just used the extra blocker to get on a linebacker or pulled him to get around the corner.

Big game points wise. Last year, the loss vs Jackson started a downward spiral for the Spartans.

Boardman's arguably 3 most important games are 3 of the next 4, and the one that isn't is a surprise to be quite frank...

@Jackson
@Steubenville
Canfield

http://fantastic50.net/team029.html

Win 2 of these 3 and it's hard to see Boardman not making the playoffs, even at 5-5. We almost are a lock at 6-4 (perhaps a home game even). I can't see Steubenville losing more than a game outside of us if we were to win. Canfield probably doesn't lose a game besides us potentially if they beat Chardon Friday, and Jackson as a D1 should win at least 6 games.

While Mooney, Fitch, and Ursuline are all very important, I just don't see them winning a ton of games between them. Hard to read the Cardinals at this point, as Cleveland Heights just lost to a Canadian team.

This should be a good one. I think the difference will be Jackson's speed on the outside and being tested a little more in the first two games. Defense and consistent run-blocking are still question marks, but I'll guess Jackson 31-24.

Region 7 is so bad, that a 6-4 Spartans team is currently projected as the 4th seed.

The downward spiral risk is much more prevalent on Jackson's side this year, at least when considering the playoffs. It's not the end of the world if the Bears lose, but a win over Boardman gives them a massive advantage over Perry since Perry's out-of-conference schedule will provide them very few L2 points. A 7-3 Jackson team almost always beats out an 8-2 Perry team in Region 1 should the Bears finish their non-Fed schedule 4-0.

Anyway, I'm going to go with 31-21 Jackson. I think the Bears are putting together their finished product. The yards-per-carry against the Jackson D dropped significantly from the East to Mayfield games. Jackson will not be world beaters in that category and Mayfield is Mayfield, but that's exactly what you want to see and all they need is a serviceable defense so long as the offense stays healthy. Boardman looks solid, but I think by the end of the 3rd quarter/beginning of the 4th they run out of offensive weapons and the Bears pull away from a close one.

Weather looks good and it should be a great game. Good luck to both teams.

Should be a good one. It will be interesting to see how this new-look Boardman offense fairs against a pretty good D-1 opponent.

O'Horo and the passing game was pretty sharp vs Howland. And there's a lot of quality weapons at WR and some speed there w/ guys like JaJuan Forte, Keyshawn Coleman, Joe Ieraci, and East transfer Maurice Pickard. Also, the 2 young TE's - Alex Huzicka(JR) and Conner Miller (SO) were very pleasant surprises catching the ball. Not bulky TE's - but 6'1"/6"2ish, looked to be sure-handed, and good running after the catch.

I think Boardman's focus on D needs to be stop the run. As, although the Bears look to be able to throw the ball well. they've racked up a lot of rushing yards.

Based on the first half of last week, Boardman seems totally comfortable throwing nearly every play, as they were something like 17 of 20 passing in the first half.

Boardman basically shut down the offense in the second half. Jennings was getting basically whatever he wanted on the ground so it will be interesting to see the offense against a good D1 team. O'Horo had 222 of his 228 in the first half, after he threw the last TD on our first series of the third quarter he threw only 1 more pass I believe...

Jennings may be a difference maker. Listening to Jim Ballard on WHBC talk about the game yesterday made it seem like both teams are nearly identical. Joe Childers seems to be like Ieraci in terms of size and athleticism, but Jennings is a solid bruiser with a non stop motor.

Boardman is more equipped to defend the pass this year than they have been in many recent years so we'll see.

The heck of it is, Childers is a senior. He's been at WR for three years. Had the Bears had a dual rushing threat last year, I could see them notching an extra win or two out of their close losses.
