Residents of exclusive SF street didnít pay their taxes. So someone bought the street

Quote:
Can you buy a city street? Is that even possible?

Residents of Presidio Terrace, the oval-shaped privately owned street commonly known as one of the most exclusive communities in San Francisco, learned the answer the hard way.

Tina Lam and Michael Cheng of San Jose said that in 2015 they were looking at parcels being auctioned online by San Franciscoís tax office when they saw a description of ďthis odd property in a great location.Ē

ďPart of Pacific Heights, the right location, land in a good neighborhood. We took a chance,Ē Cheng told the San Jose Mercury News. He said they bought the land sight-unseen, beating out 73 other bidders and dropping $90,000 for the street and its common areas.

I didn't read the article, but I understand the home owners' association had not paid taxes for several years, stating the bills had been sent to the wrong address. (Uh, duh. Do you think we should check into this)? Now, the residents are worried about the possibility of having to pay for on-street parking. Tears. Good for the Chengs!

If I read the article correctly, the HOA owed a whopping $994. A tax bill of FOURTEEN dollars a year went unpaid.

As much as I would enjoy smugly telling a millionaire to get bent, I think they have a valid argument.

It seems like the city never did due diligence to actually contact the HOA, instead continued to send letters to an accountant/lawyer that no longer worked for the HOA. No noticed were placed. And decided they could sell off a $1,000 debt for $90,000. A return on the debt ridiculous in scope.

Thought I had heard the $14/yr. correctly, but was not sure enough to post.

Yeah, sounds like the city dropped the ball on this. And, in retrospect, unless the new "person" received at least one invoice/statement, they may not have realized the HMA was responsible for any tax. Not knowing what the new accountant/lawyer was told - or asked - about obligations, I'll withhold judgment on that person(s). Now, I wonder if there are grounds to void the transaction/contract, putting the parties in the position they were in at the outset. Could be interesting. Thanks for reading and filling me in.

I don't know what government you have been interacting with In your lifetime, but the one I have you are responsible for paying your taxes, and updating the contacts and address changes.

Now, I don't agree with this outcome, but past practices by the government will make this legit.

I lol'd reading the article when it explained they owed $994.

That's exactly the bureaucracy Feistein and Pelosi aim to create. Well deserved IMO

LOL Yes, from a legal standpoint. That is, if there is any legal recourse.

My wife handles property taxes for 12 different businesses and an estate that holds a lot of property. Over 600 parcels in one county alone. They do a little more than just mail letters when they want to auction a property and it's happened many times due to the sheer number of properties on file being paid and the county misapplying payments or checks just not being deposited at all. It happens.
