Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington commits suicide

Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington has committed suicide ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us the singer hanged himself at a private residence in Palos Verdes Estates in L.A. County. His body was discovered Thursday just before 9 AM.

Chester was married with 6 children from 2 wives.

The singer struggled with drugs and alcohol for years. He had said in the past he had considered committing suicide because he had been abused as a child by an older male.

Chester was very close with Chris Cornell, who himself committed suicide by hanging in May. Today would have been Cornell's 53rd birthday. Chester wrote an open letter to Chris on the day of Chris' suicide.

The band has had a string of hits over the years, including "Faint," "In the End" and "Crawling." Linkin Park crossed music genres, collaborating with Jay-Z.

The band's albums, "Meteroa" and "Hybrid Theory," were two of the biggest alternative albums in music history.

Bennington was 41.

RIP

I seriously hope JHubbs is ok. I'm pretty sure he hasn't posted anything since Cornell committed suicide. It's kind of bothering me.

Hopefully this doesn't cause a rash of suicides or car accidents in the area

Sorry, no compassion for these guys that commit suicide leaving their friends and family to suffer.

Cowards way out. The only ones I have some sympathy for are those suffering from immense amounts of physical pain like Junior Seau. At the top of the chicken list are the many Nazi leaders who would rather take this way out than face humanity for their actions.

So sad to hear about these things. I'd never heard of the dude. I've heard of Linkin Park, but don't know them or their music well.

It's funny that in society, we try to "fix" problems. Car crashes...wear seat belts/ air bags...in sport, specifically football, concussions, we have a whole concussion protocol program now, even in high school and colleges...

But for some reason, we have many people in music who get involved in drugs (nothing new) and either overdose or commit suicide because "life" gets too much for them...
Why don't we ever try to fix these problems?? Instead, we now want to legalize marijuana and make it more possible for people to get addicted to drugs?? SMH...

Good on you for announcing you have no compassion for someone who a) you don't know, b) didn't know you, and c) is already dead.

I'm sure that meant something to someone. Or something.

Could you conceive of 'immense amounts of mental pain' enough to sympathize?

Oddly I have the exact opposite view. I think checking out because of physical pain is far more cowardly than someone dealing with emotional/psychological issues.

I have sympathy for him (physical or emotional pain). Not sure why someone wouldn't empathize with someone struggling with whatever that they contemplate suicide.

Yeah, pretty stupid to say it's the coward's way out. Mental pain/depression is far more serious of an issue than physical pain.

I'd say severe pain that makes someone comtemplate suicide is of equal concern.

Ask someone what it's like having depression so severe that they'd rather kill themselves than live any longer.

I don't disagree, was just speaking in general. Mental disease is a huge problem that really gets pushed aside by a lot of people. As evidenced by some of the responses here.

Pretty sure he was abused as a kid and had been dealing with it through substance abuse.

Yeah I read he was molested by his uncle or something and used drugs/alcohol to cope.

A lot of his lyrics talk about depression and dying too.

I listened to Faint yesterday and followed the lyrics. Pretty obvious he was hurting. As someone who has had a virtually pain-free life, I can't imagine what others go through. The best I can do is empathize. RIP.

We disagree. That's ok, we are allowed to. I respect your opinion to sympathize with someone that chooses to end their life and leave their family (he had 6 children) behind to suffer. I, however, believe that cowards commit suicide and that it is the single most selfish act that a human being can do.

Madge tells the widow and kids that their mentally ill father and husband was selfish. Nice guy.
