2017 Senior World Team Trials

Itís the grand finale, the biggest domestic tournament of the year: the senior world team trials. As with Juniors, the winner of the US Open will sit in the finals here and have an important bye against whoever makes it out of the challenge bracket.

57kg:
A resurgent Tony Ramos is in the finals here; seems like the move to Chapel Hill has paid off so far. Tyler Graff grabs the one seed in the challenge tourney, with Nahshon Garrett, Nathan Tomasello, and Nico Megaludis rounding out the top four. I think Graff faces Tomasello in the challenge finals, and Iíll take Graff to lose to Ramos for the world team spot.

61kg:
Monroevilleís own Logan Stieber has a bye in the finals due to winning the World championships in December at 61kg. This 8 man bracket has three NCAA champs (Maple, Ness, and Brewer) and will include an interesting couple of matchups. I think Kendrick Maple wins the bracket, he looked awfully good at the open, and he will lose to Logan in two.

65kg:
Since Jordan Oliver decided to get busted for the juicy juice (failed drug test), 2016 Olympian Frank Molinaro gets a bye into the finals (which is weird, since Zain and Frank had the same loss at the open and they didnít wrestle a true 2nd, but whatever). Penn State rising senior Zain Retherford gets the one seed, with names like BJ Futrell, Kellen Russell, and Evan Henderson filling out this bracket. Zain will win, and I think itís a toss up between him and Frank, but Iíll take Frank.

An aside: this weight is extremely weak compared to last year. This weight had Pico, Green, Stieber, Metcalf, Ness, Humphrey, and Kennedy at the Olympic trials last year. Weird how that happened.

70kg:
2015 World bronze James Green torched the field at the open and gets the bye here. I think the winner of the Jimmy Kennedy-Jason Nolf semi will face Green, where Green will beat either one. Iím taking Kennedy based on size and freestyle experience. Also at this weight are the always exciting Dylan Ness and 2016 Junior world team member Alec Pantaleo.

74kg:
The king stays the king: Jordan Burroughs beat Kyle Dake in a tight and controversial match at the open and gets the important bye to the finals. There are only 6 entries here but you know them all: Dake, Dieringer, LeValley, IMar, Marsteller, and Anthony Valencia. Really excited to see Chance Martsteller, really excited to see IMar, but Dake will win and have to face a fully rested Burroughs. Gimme the champ in 3.

86kg:
After some questions on whether he would wrestle, JíDen Cox gets the bye here due to the Olympic bronze he won last year. The one seed in the challenge tourney is one of the hottest freestyle wrestlers in the world: David Taylor, who recently beat two previous Olympic champs, including pinning Iranís Hassan Yazdani Chariti. Interesting names in this bracket: previous Greco world teamer Joe Rau, the always opinionated Pat Downey, and Ohio Stateís Nick Heflin. For the first (and only) time this weekend, I think the challenge winner beats the wrestler with a bye: gimme Taylor in 3.

97kg:
Boy Wonder Kyle Snyder will be an overwhelming favorite here in a weight class without a challenger. Kyven Gadsen is the one seed, with Ohio wrestlers Ty Walz and Dustin Kilgore challenging on the bottom. I think Snyder takes care of Gadsen in two.

125kg:
With six time world teamer Tervel Dlagnev retiring, this weight was ripe for taking, and NC Stateís Nick Gwiazdowski did so at the open. 2015 World teamer Zach Rey will be his biggest competition, but look out for Dom Bradley, who has been wrestling well of late. Any one of Rey, Tony Nelson, Bobby Telford, and Bradley can win the challenge bracket, but Iím taking Bradley over Rey, with Gwiz beating Bradley in two for his first world team spot.

It's so tough for guys to come through the challenge bracket though. Maple will have to beat Dardanes, Ness/Brewer, then someone like Colon or Wright just to get to Stieber, who will be rested and up in weight, both huge advantages.

OH update:
Tomasello beat Perrelli 7-3, will face Waters in the semis
Heil lost to Futrell 4-3, has Mario Mason in the consis
David Taylor teched Joe Rau 13-0 in 36 seconds, has the unattached assassin Pat Downey in the semis
Heflin just pinned Austin Trotman, will probably face Richard Perry
Walz has Burak coming up, Kilgore has Blaize Cabell

IMar is getting better acclimated at freestyle. Think he would have gotten teched last year by Dake, this year wrestled all 6 minutes and scored a couple pushouts. Hope he stays with it, I think he's in the hunt for 2020.

Gilman says. "I know how to beat him and he know's it."
Ramos says, "I'm gonna 'stomp a mud hole' in him."

Molinaro may have been better off wrestling his way into the final?

Hopefully Burroughs retires while Dake still has a chance to represent. Won't be tonight. Or will it?

DT has looked pretty sharp regardless of the 'close' match earlier. Cox is a specimen.

Is Gadson the last American to beat Snyder?

Bradley had no problems getting there.

What a comeback for Stieber. Holy crap he was just being owned for the first 2.5 min and scores a last second TD to win it 9-7.
