Usain Bolt takes bronze at world championships in his final race

Quote:
Usain Bolt's farewell party was spoiled by a pair of Americans.

The Jamaican great finished third in his final 100-meter race, with Justin Gatlin and Christian Coleman taking gold and silver Saturday at the world championships.

In a tight finish, Bolt was punished for his slow start and Gatlin fought back to nip everyone at the line in 9.92 seconds. Coleman took silver in 9.94 seconds while Bolt got bronze in 9.95.

Looked like he was stuck in mud. Wonder how long his world record will stand. Step aside for the youngsters...

The Bolt era is officially over.

Nice run at the top of the heap. Longer than anyone since Carl Lewis ?

That was my thought. Bolt must be off the juice . I always wondered how a small country could have so many fast people. You could hit one once in a while, but they seem to have them lined up waiting their turn, men and women both.

Or he's 30 and most sprinters start to decline by 30.

I once saw a documentary on Jamaican sprinters. Track and Field is one of that nation's main sports. Much like distance running is in East Africa. Also, there is a chapter in a book called The Sports Gene that discusses the genetic ties that many of these Jamaican sprinters have to one another, i.e. their ancestors all seem to have lived in a certain area on the island.

The irony in all of this is that the winner (Justin Gatlin) was a convicted doper (he served a 4-year suspension) who is 35 years old. I'm actually more surprised that Gatlin won than I am that Bolt lost. Bolt didn't look to be as "into it" at these World Championships. He wanted to retire after the Olympics. His world records may last awhile though.

Almost all the sprinters in the world train here in the US somewhere

They're all essentially americans that run for other countries

How old was the runner that beat him and took first place? After 35 things must take a up turn.

Not true of the Jamaicans. The Jamaicans feel the American college athletics system involves too much racing, so many of them do not come to the U.S. to attend college and train.

You mean Justin Gatlin, who has been caught doping twice in his career?

And he paid the price for getting caught did he not? I am sure they test him extra close. So off the juice and 35 makes you faster, who would have guessed.

would you say most sprinters train in the US, regardless of nationality?

I'm sure not taxing the body for 6 years during his bans haven't contributed his longevity.

Andre Agassi and Roger Federer performed well st older ages because of them taking time off and taking care of their body. Certainly can be done but I wouldn't be surprised if Gatlin had better drugs

Too bad Bolt didn't step and run the 400 more at some point. Mid 42's or faster would have been cool to see.

I really thought he would have shortly after his first Olympics. Given his weakness is his start, it wouldn't have been nearly detrimental in the 400.

Bolt's career ended on Saturday with him blowing out his hamstring while running the anchor leg of Jamaica's 4x100m relay. Jamaica was trailing both the USA and Great Britain when Bolt received the baton. He took a few strides before pulling up, dropping the baton, and somersaulting onto the track. He refused immediate medical assistance before eventually rising to his feet and walking across the finish line with his teammates.

Very sad to see him have to go out this way.

Incidentally, Great Britain's anchor overtook USA anchor Christian Coleman to win the gold. Japan won the bronze. The USA women's 4x100 won gold ahead of Great Britain and Jamaica.
