Huricane Irma

After a nice break from hurricanes the US gets wacked in a couple weeks by a 4 on the gulf coast and potentially a 5 in Florida. Baton down the hatches Florida, Irma could be the real deal.

With another following it. Not to mention the one in the southwestern gulf and the ones in the Pacific. It's that time of year.

SC has declared a state of emergency. Hopefully, Irma will stay further to the east (out to sea would be good) as it moves up the coast. States as far north as Maine sometimes feel the effects of this type of storm (Nor'easter). Prayers.

I was in Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) for a wedding in early June, and I can only imagine what the resort will look like after this storm goes through.

No idea. Someone above mentioned South Carolina declaring a state of emergency. I'm only about an hour away from the SC border so I can only assume we'll see a bit of it. Some areas near me got hit hard during last year's hurricane season.

The way it looks, Irma is going to travel right up the eastern coast of Florida and hit the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina. I know multiple people in Hilton Head and they all are freaking out

Hilton Head could go from zero hurricanes since around 1885 to getting punched in back-to-back years

NC has declared a state of emergency starting at 8:00am. Storm could go to the left (mountains) of the Piedmont Triad (my home) or to the right (coast). Right now, most likely it will split the difference and come our way. Wish the coast no ill, but I hope she goes as far east as possible. Turn baby, turn...

So this was cool. Must have been some pretty extreme turbulence but you don't get to fly into a hurricane everyday

Just enough of a bowling alley to fly through, as long as you don't go into the gutters!

Was watching some Youtube videos this morning of the hurricane hunters fly the Hercules plane back and forth through hurricanes. Pretty impressive. You see all the techs in the back, strapped in with 4-point harnesses, and you wonder if anyone has ever thrown up on an expensive computer array.

The control tower in San Juan evacuated almost immediately after the flight took off. Crazy

I'd imagine motion sickness is an immediate disqualifier for getting a job like that

Looks like Irma's going to take the westward track towards Cincy. No worries - the mountains should reduce the punch.

Witty.

The Governor's office out of Columbia, SC is suppose to issue a statement sometime Friday regarding the state wide cancellation of all SC schools for Monday and Tuesday.

I-26 between Charleston and Columbia starting Saturday morning will move to one way traffic. After that people can continue heading north on 26 or head north on 77 or west on I-20.

Should know more by the end of the school day today.

Still a moving target but the new national weather service model has this thing taking a right after Cuba and heading right up the middle of Florida Sunday, basically a worse case scenario for the state. Then it remains a cat 1 Monday into Tuesday until just before Atlanta where it becomes a tropical storm until it reaches Nashville on Wednesday early AM still as a tropical storm: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...T.nav=top-news

Good news is the Carolinas may be spared but who would think a tropical storm could potentially make it to Nashville?

That's what I was thinking looking at the latest cone prediction. As you say the mountains should pretty much kill the wind but the rainfall may still be intense. I'm thinking the Tennessee & Ohio valleys could be in for some serious flooding.

After Ike came all the way to Cincinnati and beyond, I think anything is possible with these things.

Looks like the storm path is to the West of Ohio. I'm guessing this means it will start going East at some point after it gets to Kentucky, Indiana, or Illinois. Probably looking at alot of rain in Ohio next weekend.

Rush Limbaugh, who apparently spent week claiming Irma was media hype to sell things and further the climate change discussion, evacuated Florida today. What an ahole.
