Mrs. Monte drags me in about once a year for some MSG-infused, overly-marinated rubber chicken she likes. I've noticed the clientele to be decidedly more "urban."

My "urban" cousins took me there, some function we were attending nearby, I forgot what it was. I liked it alright. But way too many comparably priced options for me to go to any business school designed menu restaurant.

Trust me, I am no food snob. Quite simply, their food generally doesn't taste "pretty good." Most often, it is in fact tasteless.

If you want to defend that place be my guest.

The four times I have ever been have been some of the worst dining experiences I have ever had.

I have not been there in a while but I would say it is okay but nothing great just like Friday's. I was at Chili's last week and it was probably better than Applebee's.

The place is so terrible that you only went back three more times?

None of them by choice. All of them were travelling in college for tennis. Coaches choice, he loved the place, he was almost 70 had no taste buds. All four were different locations

My impression has been that they probably don't actually prepare too much food at an Applebee's. I think they just thaw things out, open packages, and warm things up.

meh

I like Applebees. Affordable, decent food, and I always see people there from the community, especially late on Friday nights after football games. But I wouldn't go there for my birthday or when I just want really good food.

Applebee's, Chili's, and Friday's are all pretty much the same and I rarely see them busy in Canton. The Rail seems to be doing a bit better than all three of them.

Seeing some of the really negative comments against Appleby's and other fast-casual chains, I'm curious: do those folks have finely-developed gourmet palates, make their own sushi and pasta with seasonings from their own herb garden, or do they frequent 4-star French restaurants on a regular basis?

I don't think you need a refined palate nor frequent Michelin-rated restaurants to think Applebee's is mediocre at best.

Of course it's mediocre, when you make that comparison - it's fast-casual, and not in the league you mentioned. In that context, "mediocre" is the same as "eh, pretty good" or "okay for now, since we're not using white tablecloths".

I'm talking about the adjectives of awful, sucks, terrible, lousy, etc. being used, which seem to be at a lower level than mediocre. Was just curious if they were really referring to the food itself - hence the exaggerated cuisine comparisons - and if so, do they typically choose a tonier establishment when they don't want to cook on a Saturday night.

LOL. Don't mind me, I'm just bored today.

Speaking of which - I'm still having trouble on that other forum, trying to comprehend that other folks have different tastes in pizza then me .

Applebee's, Friday's and the like are not fast casual. Fast causal means the restaurant does not offer table service and you typically order your food then sit down. So yes, when you compare Applebee's food which is usually fried or microwaved it's significantly worse than other sit down restaurants, imo. I'd really only consider going there if I had a gift card. The food isn't horrible but you can do much better and also stay in the same-ish price range.

Thanks, I used the incorrect term there. Should have just said "casual".

You can tell I've lost my couth. Mrs. Zunardo and I went to TAT in Columbus recently, first time in a while, and I kept getting restless because there wasn't a TV to watch during our meal.

I'd rather have fast casual from Chipotle or Five Guys than Applebees.

I forgot about Red Robin...their burgers are surprisingly good. Everything else is alright. Still overall better than Applebees for sure.

Texas Roadhouse is probably my favorite casual sit down type place. There are none near where I live though. Good food and pretty good price.

I almost forgot - my wife refuses to go to RR anymore. Twice, someone at the table across the aisle from us has thrown up on me in the middle of dinner.

True story - actually, they just splashed my shoe both times. I still can't believe it happened to us twice. The second time, my wife just got up and walked out.

I still like their burgers, though.

My palate is far from refined. I'm usually either grabbing fast food to eat at home (often Taco Bell or some local Chinese take-out), or I'm eating at a more local establishment that serves better food than what I'd get for the same price at Applebee's. I'm not a big fan of most national sit-down chains. When it comes to pizza, I'll take the local joint over the chains - even if I'm away from home.
