Applebee's Gives Up On Millennials After Failed Rebranding Efforts

Quote:
Applebee's announced this month that more than 130 of its restaurants will close by the end of the year.

The casual dining chain rebranded itself in the past few years as a modern bar and grill.

Applebee's executive John Cywinski recently told investors that the company had hoped the effort would attract a new kind of customer.

The chain aimed to lure "a more youthful and affluent demographic with a more independent or even sophisticated dining mindset, including a clear pendulum swing towards millennials," he said.

They clearly didn't rebrand enough. From what I could tell it was a minor face lift, didn't really do anything to attract a new type of customer.

You will continue to see a churn of all restaurants, the market is flooded by them. You have good food, at at reasonable price, and above all, give good service, and you'll be fine. Every restaurant has major staffing issues these days as fewer and fewer are willing to work evenings and weekends. A good waitress / waiter can make really good money now because the bar is so low.

In my opinion the major expansion of wing restaurants have really hurt Applebee's over the past 15-20 years. It used to be where everyone in a 10-15 mile radius went after a game/school event. The adults could grab a drink and there was affordable food. Then every city got a wing joint and why drive if I can get a beer and food in my own city? Just a theory

And there you have it - two critical factors impacting Applebee's predicament, as well as the rest of the industry

I think their food food is fine, but the glut of chains in the Grove City area where my wife and I usually head when we go out for a "casual" meal makes it less likely we go there.

Another sub-factor brought on by the "chicken chains" is actually a sobering commentary on our "need-to-be-constantly-entertained society - Applebee's has a dearth of TV's set to sports channels. You know what that means: I actually have to carry on a conversation with my wife during the meal.

One restaurant chain we've come to like is Miller's Ale House near OSU. I don't know how prevalent they are in Ohio elsewhere, but it has several pluses that draw us there:

- Almost no wait-time
- a large menu, we're still trying different items after 2 years
- roomy booths
- separate dining area with a fireplace
- large selection of craft and popular-label beers

- and of course, a plethora of 60" TV's that can be easily viewed from any seat.

Good point. My son works 3 or 4 evenings a week as a server in one of the eateries at the Arena District in Columbus. He's well-groomed, knows how to present himself, busts his rear, and makes decent tip money for a 4-hour shift (he has a full-time job during the day).

One reason we love the Roosters chicken-wing place in Grove City? That particular store has mastered the art of training their wait staff to be friendly, fast, and efficient, and they keep an eye on you from a discreet distance without bugging you every 30 seconds while you're trying to eat. On their slowest times of the day that place is still half-full, so their servers know they're going to have plenty of customers and tip opportunities every day. The net result is that the GC Roosters doesn't have problems filling server jobs.

I went to Applebee's once, years ago. Asi-asi.

I worked in grocery retail my first 15+ years after high school. There were too many of that type of retail establishment then (and I doubt it has changed) - just like the proliferation of restaurants where - I believe - more food dollars are now spent (vs. groceries). Margins are thin, making profitability a tough go. It's a game...

I honestly dont know how chains like Applebees, o'charley, Friday's, etc. are still open. Haven't been to one in probably 10 years. They all basically sell the same Sysco supplied food.

I always chuckle when I see statements like this. Maybe it's because I'm not a food snob, but how is their food 'lousy'? If you order a hamburger or a chicken breast it's gonna taste pretty good.

What's so 'lousy' about it?

I'd rather seek out a good 'mom and pop' local joint than a chain type place.

I can't remember the last time i was at applebees, olive garden, ruby tuesdays, tgifridays or any place like that. Same goes with pizza places, steak places, whatever. It's all slop and poor service.

Applebees food is clearly a step below even a Friday's or Chili's. I'm no food snob either but even I can clearly acknowledge that.

Every one of their pasta dishes uses the same style of pasta. Come on.

I had an incredible cannoli at Mellow Mushroom in Charlotte a few months ago. Have not been to any similar restaurant since. Did I mention the cannoli was incredible?

Convenience. I bet they get a lot of business from people who travel.

Chains are pretty popular down here in the south because it's where people go when they want a fancy meal lol

Owner run, locally sourced (as opposed to out of the freezer ubiquitous Chinese) are popping up all over here. They're not the mom and pop family run of old (a few are) but more entreprenureal efforts meant to reach people across the entire region. And they're good, conpetitively priced but generally not located in the lower economic neighborhoods so, it's still fast-food if you want variety.

I hope we're not at the saturation point because the number of both types is growing quickly and I don't think the owner run ones can win against the franchises.

That's saying a lot because Friday's is awful, IMHO. Haven't been to Chili's in nearly 25 years.

^ - It was a jab at BJF. He is the perceived "liberal" flag carrier on this site so comments like this are thought to offend and/or annoy him.

I actually chuckled a bit. I know a couple big lesbian chicks who detest "riblets" and prefer a full rack.
