Obviously Horter is the best 800m runner in the entire state, but that's beside the point here. What I'm saying is, if Mason wants to make this a legit sub-4 attempt for Dustin, they need to have a designated rabbit in the field -- preferably someone who's at least capable of, say, 1:56 for 800m. This person needs to run 29-30 second 200m splits for as long as possible.

Yes, the race would be fast without a rabbit, but the pace will lag on laps 2 and 3 if there isn't one. Dustin cannot wire-to-wire a sub 4, which is what he's said he wants to run in this race. His chances of running sub-4 in optimal conditions with perfect pacing are relatively low to begin with, but he'll have no chance without a rabbit to tuck in behind for at least 800-1000 meters.

So cometcoach, is the meet still on for today (Friday)? Was the Thursday night late call ever made to change it to Saturday?

Looks like Mason has 4 rabbits in the field.

The dream mile will be closer to 10pm which the wind is decent at around 5 MPH. But 5mph is still a heavy load for Horter.

With 4 possibly rabbits in the field, I wonder if they will take some of the East African rabbiting techniques from the 1980's.

Have 1 kid rabbit the first 800 and the 3 other rabbits jog and get lapped. After the 800 the 3 other rabbits run the last 800 as rabbits.

Ethiopia was successful with this tactic to dethrone Kenya at 2 Olympics. It looks dirty and unsportsmanlike, but 100% totally legal.

camera

Yes, the meet is still on. We may have to dodge some weather.

We are hoping the mile goes off around 8:45ish. (later if delays occur)

This just in! We have a 2nd camera.

Finish Timing will provide an extra FAT camera at the 1600 split, and will use this to document the official 1600 time.

There will also be a camera at the mile finish and all data will be up on their site later that evening.

4:15 field events
5:15 running. 4x800 - Hurdles / Dash
5:45ish - Senior night - 40+ minutes with 63 seniors.
6:30ish - meet resumes with the 4x200

The FAST mile will be right before the 3200. (8:45-9:15ish we hope)

Any word on that video stream for those who can't make it? Again, I know unlikely but would love to watch if possible.

live stream

Live stream?

Well... the only way I could see that happening is a facebook live thing. Maybe we can ask an athlete or assistant coach? We may look into it, but our biggest priority is keeping the track 100% clear and good weather. We want great conditions and a great situation.

We will have play by play, clocks at multiple points on the track and lots of cameras going.

Come out and see the show.

OMG, Dustin Horter could set four new records in the same race. He already holds the 1600m Cincinnati city record of 4:07.52 set at the GMC meet on May 13, 2017. He could also take down the city record in the mile run held by Colerain's Mason Ward of 4:07.2 from the Golden West Inv. on June 10, 2000. He could take out Bob Kennedy's all time state record of 4:05.13 run at the state meet in 1988. He could wipe out Brannon Kidder all time mile record of 4:03.12 set at the Adidas Grand Prix.

I need my statistical advisors to weight in on this monumental issue: JAVMAN83 and Seek Up are you guys out there. Would it be acceptable to give Horter credit for breaking both 1600 meter and mile records from the same race?

ABSOLUTELY. An electronic clock at 1600m qualifies absolutely. That would be recognized by ATFS. Alan Webb's 1500m HSR was set enroute to his mile record as there as an electronic clock at the 1500m point in Eugene.

unless they actually jump on the track or run slow and pace him after being lapped......Its really hard to believe that Mason has 3 or 4 other guys that can hang with this pace for more than 1k. leaves 600 meters solo.

When Horter steps to the staring line, will he get a single, double, triple or home run with all four records.

Mason had a guy leading the mile at the first lap in 57. Horter went by in 59, then took over the race on his second lap and led the rest of the way. As I can best determine, his splits were 59, 62, 62, and 61. His mile time is the leading time in the full mile this year in the country at 4:04.82. Mason does a great job with the mile. They put hurdles on the track and people line the track. Each athlete in the race is introduced separately and then jogs up the track to the starting line slapping hands with the fans on the way up. Each person's best marks are announced. What a way to give each runner recognition as they are introduced to the crowd. I love this race at Mason. There is no other like it anywhere.

Yes, there was an FAT clock at 1600 meters. Will that be enough for the state to give Horter the all time record in the 1600m breaking Bob Kennedy's 1988 time of 4:05.13. http://ohsaa.org/sports/staterecords/tf

An interesting aspect of the girls mile was Sam Bush of Turpin won it, then came back in the very next event, the 3200m run, to win it also. There couldn't have been more than 10 minutes or so in between them.

Coach must submit a record application to the OHSAA, with meet official sign-off, by fax and hard-copy to Tim Stried. Form is on-line at the OHSAA website. Get it done!

I have tried to summarize what Dustin Horter has done in the last two weekends which culminated with his taking down the state record in the 1600 meter run. I have put it on the home page of the coaches web site along with a great photo of Dustin coming down the home stretch chasing history.
