Lancer - is the Nicholas time from the UK indoor meet that year? I don't seem to recall George ever running that fast out of doors.

Check old Mansfield results. I seem to remember George running 8:11 for 3000 there.

Mansfield records show Zishka as the meet record holder in the 3000m with his 8:13.9 from 1980. Nicholas holds the 1500m record with his 3:53.0 from 1981. He also won the 3000m in 1981 with a 8:18.5. Not questioning how great of a runner George was, but, if his inclusion on the list is a result of a converted 3k, that's a little sketchy.

Pete Kummant's Sub 9 minute 2 mile is from the Sectional meet at Elyria in 1975, and is viewable on youtube:

Pete would go on to be junior national champion at 5000 that year in 14:35.

The athlete who would finish 2nd in that video - Jeff Wilhelm - ran 30:36 for 10,000 meters on the track that year in the same meet. At the time, it was a national junior class record at the distance.

Obviously, all three of those times are still our school records.

Coach Cooley was an absolute legend.

#1. Nicholas's converted time is not an indoor time.
#2. Nicholas's converted time is not a 3,000 time.
The time comes from a list of Outdoor 3200/2 mile times compiled by Craig Whitmore. Maybe we should delete it if we can't verify it like we have all the others.

tmk, thanks for the update on Kummant. I have updated his mark in post #1. Now we are down to one to ccomplete with a venue and an exact date--George Nicholas.

Are we certain that 1981 is the year Nicholas broke 9:00? He didn't do it at the sectional or district, and he didn't run at state in 1981 due to mono. He also apparently didn't run at state in 1980 due to an upper leg injury.

I found an article in the Xenia newspaper from April 25, 1980. The article was a preview of the Bellbrook Invitational to be held the following day, and it claimed Nicholas had already broken 9:00 in the two mile.

Here is George Nicholas's bio from the OATCCC Hall of Fame. It has him with a 9:01 two mile. He was inducted in the class of 1996. Someone had to submit him for induction. If we could find that person, we might be able to find out where he ran his 9:01 two mile time.

In Craig Whitmore's listing of 3200 progression but no idea where he ran it. It is on his outdoor list though.

This shows an indoor performance from 1981:
9:01.5-George Nicholas-Dayton Meadowdale-2-7-81-Mason Dixon Games,Louisville,KY

8:56.35 Chris Kollar Strongsville 2003
8:57.5* George Nicholas Dayt. Meadowdale 1981
8:58.5* Les Nagy Niles McKinley 1970

(* = 2 mile time X 99.42%)

FYI to all - Nicholas' 9:00.6 2-mile from 1981 is listed in the July 1981 issue of Track & Field News. I know from personal experience that in the pre-internet days the editors there required copies of meet results in order to be included on there lists, and even with that, there were some marks that they wouldn't list due to some discrepancy or another. I'm very confident that Nicholas ran that time outdoors that year. I'll track it down this week.

Regarding Nicholas' 9:01.5 indoor 2-mile, I HAVE FOUND THAT. That took place at the 1981 Mason-Dixon Games (Louisville, KY) on February 7, 1981 in the 2-mile open race. I do not know the order of his placing as I don't have the results from that meet. It is listed in the April 1981 T&F News issue.

Nice work on Kummant's video. Outstanding performance!

That 9:00.6 makes sense as that would convert to 8:57.5
