Eastern Relays

Possibly the best meet in the area during the season is today and tomorrow at the University of Louisville.

I would have the Wayne Invite at #2.

Any predictions?

It seems as if the Ohio entries are down a bit this year. All of the entries can be seen here if you select the event.

Tonight's boys 3200 should be good with Dustin Horter, Matt Scrape, Titus Winders of Kentucky, Zach Kreft, and Chad Johnson. I thought that Gabe Fendel of Hamilton SE in Indy was going to run but apparently is not. He's 8:58 a 2-miler and has gone 14:47 for 5K in XC. I wouldn't be shocked to see Kreft or Johnson take the win in what will probably be Horter's only 3200 this season.

Troy's Morgan Gigandet and Creek's Taylor Ewart should have a battle in the girls 3200. It looks like some other good talent is running as well including Claire Steigerwald of Gahanna Lincoln and Jenny Seas of Peebles.

Four Ohio boys sub-9, led by Horter's 8:48. Wow!

For those that have followed Ohio distance running longer than I is this senior class the best distance class ever to come out of Ohio?

The ones that could rival this is one of the 1992, 1993 or 1994 classes. I believe one of those classes had:

JJ White- went to Stanford-All American
Brian Hesson
Josh Ritchie

Doug Bockenstette
Matt Shady
Jason Rexing

There is also a class in 2004 range that was also ridiculous.

I don't know if this class is the best but it's probably one of the best. Old guys like psychodad probably have a better sense of the history and would know.

This class is incredible. Scrape, Johnson, Kreft, Horter all under 9 last night. Plus Jha and Bons who have run 4:08 and 4:09. I'm certainly no expert historian, but in the 20 years or so I've been around Ohio track, I can't think of a single class that deep. Heck Andy Payne is a beast (9:10) and he has to wait in line to be mentioned in this 2018 class.

Your comment made me think about some of the great Arcadia 3200s over the last 15-20 years.

In 2013, there were 6 heats of the 3200 where:

* 18 boys were under 9:00, 16 in the fastest heat
* 33 boys were under 9:10
* 65 boys were under 9:20
* 161 boys were under 10:00
* 3 boys were not under 10:00

http://www.arcadiainvitational.org/e...folder_id=1033

I had forgotten Nick Elswick and Sam Wharton were 18th and 19th in the fastest heat running 9:02. I don't think Sam had raced much the during indoor that year (injury, swimming?)

Crazy but exciting when that many kids run well.

Anyone remember the duo of 1980, Rickey Pittman (East Tech) & John Zishka (Lancaster), having run 2-mile times (converted from 3200m) of 8:49.4 & 8:53.0, respectively? Zishka also ran a converted 8:52.2 in '79, and the mile in 4:03.85 at GWI & 13:55.65 for the 5K at TAC Jrs in 1980.

These last posts make me wonder how many Ohioans have broken 9:00 in the 3200 meter run (Two miles). Should we try to put together a list. To be on the list, I want a location where it was done and a date. JAVMAN83, do you just use the standard amount of 3.2 seconds for conversion or the formula 0.9942 time the yard time. List manual times to the tenth but only fully automatic times to the hundred.

This was my one of my early years coaching in Ohio and I wondered if every year was going to be that tough. Also in the '80 class was Hallabrin, Zilles, Frost, Marchand, Roosevelt Jackson, Jeff Johnson, Ron Rick, and others. Most of these guys and others went on to very good college careers. This was a very tough class with some very good juniors like Nicholas also in the field.

The 0.9942 would be the correct conversion formula to use when converting 2-mile times to the current 3200m. Do not convert any MT recordings to FAT, and as always, FAT takes priority over an equivalent MT time where the tenths digits are equal.

I don't have a large database on 2-miles, but I'll throw in what I've got under 8:50 for a 3200m. I've got bigger projects I'm working on, including a database of national record progressions. Below is a listing of boys' PV records (regardless of NFHS listing or not) - only criteria is the athlete hasn't entered college or gone pro prior to leaving HS. I believe this listing is close, maybe missing a few marks, but I've only been compiling this since Jan. Dates back to 1905.

Lancer, from my info it looks like you've got a nice listing there. Scharsu's time was evidently FAT at 8:44.03 in winning the '78 GWI (according to HS Track 2011), so it would be appropriate to list it as a converted 8:40.99.

Now, where did Pittman run that time at?

Zishka also broke 8:50 - and did not win - in 1979 at Bellaire. Pittman's time was considered a national record at the time, even though many 2-mile times were faster (there was no 3200m split available).

Well done, SeekUp! Indeed, it was at the Bellaire Relays. Take a look at the following https://oh.milesplit.com/meets/52124...w#.Wt0t83xrzcs . For some reason, they list Pittman as being from Glenville instead of East Tech, but he does still hold the Bellaire Relays record. Unfortunately, the automated software in use added .24 to his 8:46.3 MT. No addition to MT times are made beyond 400m.

Once again, outstanding memory there, SeekUp!

Alan Scharsu

I want to revisit what happened with Alan Scharsu.

Beginning around 1983, the OHSAA listed him as the all time state record holder at 8:45.8, only one list for all classes.

Beginning in 1986, the OHSAA began to list by class giving Scott Fry the AA record of 8:46.7 in 1985 at a meet in Oak Harbor. Alan Scharsu is shown holding the AAA record at 8:45.8 done in Kent in 1977. Evidently, the state would not accept his time from the 1978 season done in a post season meet in California called the Golden West Inv.

In 1998, the state struck his record and installed Doug Bockenstette as the holding the state interscholastic record at 9:07.25 even though Doug ran a 9:03.25 the following week at the Midwest Meet of Champions. No reason was ever given for throwing out Scharsu's record nor for not accepting John Zishka's state meet winning MT of 8:57.5 in 1980

No reason was ever given for throwing out Scharsu's record nor for not accepting John Zishka's state meet winning MT of 8:57.5.
Wow, I didn't know all that. Reminds me of what Kansas did with Jim Ryun's 3:58.3 MT mile record set in the '65 Kansas state meet (and on YouTube). Looking at 2017 results across all divisions of their meet shows none of their 1600m records gets within 15 seconds of Ryun's mile run. Even Ryun's teammate in the '65 meet would've beaten today's 1600m records as listed.

Another record of interest is the 4x400m Division I Region 4 record (Dayton) of 3:14.80 was set over a mile relay in 1980, not the 1600m distance as it is now. The Dayton Regional, now Huber Heights (? - why the change?), didn't switch completely to metric distance until the 1982 meet. For some reason or other, Dayton has chosen to ignore the difference and need to convert times for 38 years.

The big question I have is what was Scharus's distance run at GWI. In 2000 when La Salle's Steve Padgett took third in 8:54.90, it shows the race as 3200m and Scharsu's record as 8:44.0. Every result I have seen shows the one mile but not the two mile. It shows the 3200m race as being run there. Then the very next year in 2001 the results show the record as 8:40.99 http://ca.milesplit.com/meets/5819/r...w#.Wt1H8S7waUk. It also still has John Zishka holding the mile record at 4:03.85

http://goldenwestinvitational.org/gw...lts-1960-1979/

just do a search (CTRL+F) for "scharsu" in the link above and you'll see that GWI's info lists the distance as 2 miles. It is in keeping with California trends at the time as their state meet was also still run in yards in '78. HS Track lists his mark as 8:44.03 over 2 miles.

Here are GREAT resources for most things California & some national HS track:

As an aside, Jim Ryun did a 9:04.0 / 4:04.3 2-mile/mile (in that order) within 2 hours of each other at the '65 GWI. Pretty impressive for 1965!

Updated list. Might as well complete a top ten. JAVMAN83, as usual, you are as "tenacious" in your results gathering as always and unparalleled on this site. Any issues with the 8th, 9th and 10th marks I added. Can anyone help complete Scott Fry's 1985 mark with the name of the meet and the full date.

3200 meters (* = 2 mile time X 99.42%)
1. 8:40.99*, Alan Scharsu, Youngstown Austintown Fitch, Golden West Invitational, June 10, 1978
2. 8:46.3, Ricky Pittman, Cleveland East Tech, Bellaire Relays, April 26, 1980
3. 8:46.72, Andrew Jordan, Watkins Memorial, Eastern Relays, April 29, 2016
4. 8:46.7, Scott Fry, Sandusky Perkins, Oak Harbor Region 6 meet, May 24, 1985
5. 8:48.62, Dustin Horter, Liberty Township Lakota East, Eastern Relays, April 20, 2018
6. 8:49.1, John Zishka, Lancaster, Bellaire Relays, April 26, 1980
7. 8:49.7*, Chad Balyo, Springboro, Nike Outdoor Nationals, June 16, 2006
8. 8:50.59, Gavin Gaynor, Hudson, Eastern Relays, April 29, 2016
9. 8:52.07*, Zach Wills, Mason, Nike Outdoor Nationals, June 19, 2009
10. 8:52.91, Chad Johnson, Colonel Crawford, Eastern Relays, April 20, 2018

Fry's 8:46.7 appears to have taken place at his Region 6 meet (now at Lexington). It is listed as the meet record (along with his still-standing 1600m record).

With regard to the exact date, I offer the following possible dates from the 1985 May schedule (from www.timeanddate.com) :
Thursday - 23 May 1985
Friday - 24 May 1985
Saturday - 25 May 1985

Maybe someone here can elucidate as to which one of those days/dates that region's races were on. I believe the Cincinnati Class AA meet finals were on Friday evenings back then?
