Many alum prefer Lakewood over First Energy. I don't care either way.

Erie Cathedral Prep is a better opponent...more disciplined and a better challenge for the Eagles as they prepare throughout the regular season to contend should they make the post season.

I prefer to see any Eagles vs. Wildcats contest in a smaller venue (although I am certain the young men are excited about a professional venue). The crowd involvement and their electricity can help make the contest more exciting.

Go Eagles!

Looks like a very tough schedule. Any update on what we can expect from the Eagles in 2018?

I think expectations should be high. The offense brings back a good bulk of the production with Dzuro, Castleberry and Kent, and I expect a number of talented skill guys from last year's JV team to contribute. Defense loses a lot from last year in terms of starters, but there are a handful coming back who played meaningful minutes on a rotational basis. Could be a very good year, but they will be tested early and often. With the addition of Prep, the first four weeks will be brutal.

News to me, but it the dates fit I imagine it’s just a matter of Hoban saying yes.

Must not have been a firm commitment

Stop making it look like Hoban was ducking Ed's. They are setting something up for 2019. Hoban didn't have week 3 open until Ursuline asked them to move there game to week 4. So when Ed's did call there was no opening to play.

As far as I know, there are no “commitments” with the DC team. They are one year deals where we pay them to come and play us to fill voids on the schedule. There has never been a home and home with a DC public that I can ever recall. As you can see from the emergence of the game with Erie Prep, it’s usually just a matter of telling them “game off,” maybe we’ll call you next year.

I think they were both ducking each other so that's why no calls were made.

Not sure if anyone's seen it yet but today St. Ed's announced that Coach Urbas would be retiring as a full time faculty member and head coach of the wrestling team. He is staying on as a math tutor and still a part of the wrestling program, they did not mention his football duties though.

What can be said about the guy? He's a legend in so many ways, a coach, a teacher, a presence in the building, everyone seems to have a Coach Urbas story. Fantastic coach and a spectacular human being.

Since its a football forum, I just want to say I hope that Coach Urbas will stay on as the head freshmen coach. I think one thing that is a great benefit to the program and school is that for many young Eagles, their first experience as Edsmen is being a part of his Herb football team. He teaches you a lot about what it means to put on the green and gold, work hard every day to improve yourself so you can help the team out and pushes students to be a part of the high school in many ways. If he does not want to, he's completely earned it but I would love to see him on the sidelines there a la Coach Bossu at Bennie for so many years, just let him be a part of wrestling and football for as long as he wants to be.

I have a pretty reliable source within the St. Edward football program.

Prior to the 2014 season, this person told me that Cole Gest was going to be a star. (This was before Gest had played a down of varsity football.)

In the days leading up to the 2014 season, none of you (St. Edward posters) had even mentioned Gest's name.

So, I posted my source's opinion on this forum. Two state championships later, I guess he was correct.

Well, I had a recent conversation with him regarding the upcoming season.

He tells me that the incoming freshmen football class is so talented that it has the potential to be the best class in St. Edward history.

We are so very fortunate to have this class and the coaches to bring the best out of them.

St. Ed's is a program that is blessed to have a lot of talented players and a history of them as well. While Cole was a great player, I think you are overlooking the talent of the team he was on his junior year, loaded with D-1 talent including himself. I'm not sure he was a surprise as much as he was just a footnote on a team that had so many different players that made an impact. His rise allowed for Andrew Dowell to focus more on defense, which helped immensely though. The next year he was the star with a solid offensive line and they rode him until the rest of the offense caught up to Varsity speed. He played his way into a scholarship for Indiana, I think most of us were a little surprised by it, definitely a MAC school or something like that but not Big 10.

The 15’ class was loaded by any normal standard as well. It’s unfortunate that the skill and big skill kids of 14’-15’ didn’t match up chronologically with the Kalis, Orlowski, Render, Kuhar O and D lines. That would have been a pretty okay football team.

I would have guessed with all of the talented offensive linemen the eagles have had over the last 15 years that their would have been one more player besides Alex Boone to make it to the NFL.

Just goes to show how hard it is to play on Sunday’s.

Quintel Kent landed an offer from Michigan after taking the WR MVP at their recent camp. I believe this is the first Power 5 offer for the class of '19.

Looks like promising junior RB Alain Trice has transferred to Cleveland Heights. I expected him to be a contributor this year even with the return of Castleberry, allowing the Eagles to keep fresh legs at the RB position.

Anyone know if Mac Wainwright will be playing this fall? I know he participates on the baseball travel circuit all summer. Already being committed to play baseball for OSU, I wasn't sure if he was going to hang up the football cleats.

Unfortunately transfers are the price of success sometimes. In the early 2000s, St. Ed's had three great running backs, Rashaun Stover was the only one who remained at Ed's and wrote some of the records in the program. The other two went on to star at Rocky River and St. Peter Chanel. It happens and continues to happen when you have a big program that wins a lot.
