Salem's boys won the final NBC league meet topping Alliance and West Branch. Salem scored 137, Alliance 108 and West Branch 97. The usually powerful Louisville Leopards finished a distant fifth, but they did lose a boatload of talent to graduation. They will have a lot of talent coming up from the middle school. Salem's girls finished fifth behind powerful Louisville and very talented runner up Minerva. Salem's Caitlyn Marx broke the record in the girls discus with a toss of 147-7, eclipsing the previous record by just over ten feet. She seemed to struggle a bit until her last throw when she broke the record. Carrolton's Alivia Bentley was leading with a mark of 136-10 until Marx had her winning throw.

But the team that can figure out how to break through that....is golden.

Yeah, I think Coventry boys scored in every event too, besides the shot put, and the 800 (we didn't run Skaggs). Problem is the relative lack of standout athletes with us this season. We had to rely on too many 5ths and 6ths places to scrap those 87 point together, although we did do decent in the short relays; you don't need standouts for that. We wont represent as well in regionals as we did the last couple years, and we would need some major luck to get anything to state. But we will see. Look for us in the jumps and 110 hurdles.
We get all the other sports out, just don't fill out the events like the CC kids do. CC kids in long jump, HJ, PV, Disc, 400 up and even 200 / 4x200.

Yeah, XC kids can be serviceable in 200's at least in the relays. Our head coach, Danny Savage, ran track for Hoover, as well as XC. ran sub 18's in XC. A record holder for Hoovers 4 by 200 (sub 1:30). He was a 21 ft long jumper. And a proficient thrower. They are rare, but there are freaks of nature out there that can excel at just about every event in track. Nick Jones was our best example of that.

An excellent battle shaping up at the Salem DII district. The Salem girls lead Marlington by four points with two events to go. This should come down to the 1600 relay for the championship. If things go as they should in the 3200, they will be close to being tied before the relay. They have been battling back and forth throughout the meet. Marlington beat Salem in the 1600 relay at their conference meet. The Salem boys have already wrapped up the title, leading by 37 with two more races to go.

Wasn't a bad showing for us, I thought. We got a fair amount of athletes to regionals in several events. We competed well in some areas, like the sprint relays and jumps and hurdles. Distance was disappointing for us however. I was hoping we could have gotten Ray out in the 1600 but, his 4:38 was only good for 7th this year. 4th place ran a 4:25. I mean, what can I say. That's the way it is. All in all, I think our young guys did very well, and I look forward to seeing how they develop going forward. Even our girls, who also have a fairly young team, have looked decent in the sprints and hurdles. If we can build on that, we could actually put together a nice girls team in the next couple years, for once. Anyways, Im satisfied overall with our performance. Congrats to Salem on their title.

Some surprises and some disappointments at the Austintown Div II Regional. A record was set in the girls 100 prelims by Mia Knight of Beachwood at 11.90. She was also very close to the record in the 200. Maybe the conditions will cooperate and she can get that on Saturday. Salem girls and boys did not qualify anybody for the final in the 400 which was a bit of a surprise as they were more than capable of doing so. Ke'aijhan Strong of Tuslaw looks tough again this year in the 400, striding to a 57.91. She looks fit enough to break the record she set last year. She is one of those athletes who is just plain fun to watch. Salem girls finished 3rd in the 4x8 at 9:38.2 (their best this season) behind Chagrin Falls winning 9:25 effort and just ahead of fourth place Woodridge and fifth place SVSM. Salem girls also qualified third in the 4x4 at 4:04.73. All eight teams are separated by just a few seconds so it should be a great 4x4 final. The boys 4x800 was a battle to the finish with the top four separated by just eight tenths of a second. CVCA won in 8:01.06, Salem was fourth in 8:01.88 just a few tenths behind SVSM and one second in front of fifth place Orange. Salem boys ran by far their best 4x100 of the season qualifying for the final with the third best time of 43.84. A lot of fast teams out there though that ran just to qualify. We'll see what happens in the final. Salem qualified fourth for the 4x4 final in 3:27, but Warrensville and CVCA looked strong battling it out in heat one, cruising to 3:24's. Salem's Cooper Stockman continues to improve in the discus. He qualified for state by finishing third at 146-7 behind Haywood of Perry who threw 160 on his first attempt for an easy victory. Good luck to all the athletes in their attempt to qualify for state.

Coventry had a mixed showing. Our 4 by 200, which ran a 1:32.12 at districts should have made the finals, but got DQ'd. Our 4 by 100 also failed to make the finals, although that was not much of a surprise. In the 110 hurdles, we had a guy, Damian Jackson, who ran the 6th best time overall in 15.13 seconds. He is only .06 seconds off from the second best time, so I still like his chances of getting to states.
