Not sure why Funderburk was let go, but I am sure it was a good reason. The more the onion is peeled back the more we see how bad this program was becore the coaching change. It is going to take a while to clean this mess up, but I am glad they made the change now instead of after this season. Glad the new coach is doing some house cleaning even if it is going o be painful in the short term.

The thing that hurts the most for next season is Trevor Thompson unwisely going into the NBA draft.

Anyway, it looks like Goodwin is headed to Notre Dame.

Not sure why it was unwise for Thompson to go into the NBA draft. Already 23, been in school for 4 years, zero chance of improving his draft stock. Program in dysfunction, new coach. Good move on his part even if he doesn't latch on to a team. Goes overseas.

I think Thompson leaving says a lot about program issues and culture. This was an even worse early entry than the Ross draft entry a few years ago.

Another big recruiting hit. Bazely and Nance are already off the board as well.

How do you know he wouldn't have improved even more with one more year in college, and maybe even enough to get drafted? I would think a new coach would make it an even better opportunity for improvement versus another year with Thad.

He would still be able to go overseas after next season, so it's not like that window of opportunity closes by staying.

He could also have a career ending injury this coming season. Only one player was drafted at age 24 (the age of Thompson at next year's draft) and that was a 42.7% 3 point shooter. NBA drafts on potential. Thompson is what he is at this point.

Good point on age. From an age standpoint, he would have had to of been all-world next year to get drafted. Going now gives a leg-up on an overseas career, and ensures he doesn't bust a knee playing for scholarship at OSU next year. Smart move in that context. Really smart if he graduated this year.

Bucks have a new strength coach, Quadrian Banks. Recent NFL background with previous college experience at places like Ole Miss and Richmond.

One of the Bucks most glaring problems in recent years has been the apparent lack of physical development of four year guys. Hopefully this is a good hire.

Great pickup, and good to see some hope injected into the program. They now have the #1 class in Big Ten, up from 11 at the time Matta was let go

Doing good to grab a recruit out of Indiana, from Indiana. This more than the others might put nerves to rest on whether or not the guy will keep the ship steady at the least.

It is obvious a "sense of urgency" has been re-introduced into the program with the hiring of Holtmann. I think Thad was satisfied with trying to bring in a monster 2018 class, and "saving" schollies for that class.

I'm perfectly fine with getting guys in immediately, and using up some schollies now, even if it means losing some guys from the 2018 class. Very few fanbases want to hear, "wait 'til next year."

I think it's strategically much better for the program to spread classes out anyway. That way you're not beholden the success or failure of one class, and you keep scholarships available for the next round of prospects

I agree. It's odd that Thad seemed to be heading down a path that looked a lot like 2015, even after that 2015 class blew up in his face. Perhaps he just thought, "This is going to work this time."?

Holtmann staying busy or rather luring former Butler offers.

6'5" 4-star SG Torrence Watson out of St. Louis becomes the first 2018 commit. OSU wasn't even in his top 8 but Butler was. Seems he likes Holtmann & staff.

And here all I was hoping for in the short-term was for Holtmann to convince Young to change his commitment. Things are progressing much better than I expected at this point, at least on the recruiting trail.

Unfortunately, Picktown North's Jerome Hunter picked Indiana. It's interesting that there are Indiana kids coming to Ohio State, and Ohio kids going to IU.

Holtmann and Archie Miller will be going head to head in recruiting battles for many years. This one went to Archie, but Holtmann will win his share.

Considering the Buckeyes have gotten guys like Mike Conley, Greg Oden, and Deshaun Thomas out of Indiana over the years, I'm happy to make some of those trades, especially when it means getting guys now, rather than later.

Holtman and Co. have extended a couple more in-state offers in the last couple days. The Bucks have offered '18 PF Jaxson Hayes (Moeller) and '19 SF Alonzo Gaffney (Garfield Heights via VASJ).

Hayes has exploded this spring/summer in AAU. When the recruiting site rankings update after the summer season ends, he's probably going to skyrocket from unranked to being at least a high 3*, maybe even a 4* recruit. Last winter he was 6'6-6'7, and he's grown to 6'10 over the past few months. Great length and athleticism for a big. I believe I read this is his first year of playing AAU, and he's picked up around 25 offers over the last two months. Texas, Purdue, Xavier and Butler have also offered to this point, along with just about everybody in the MAC and Horizon League. IMO, this appears to be that late bloomer type of kid that everybody will wish they had gotten 2-3 years from now.

Apparently, there is now a pipeline from Ohio State to New Mexico. Who knew?

It looks like the secret is out about basketball talent in the Columbus area.

http://www.dispatch.com/sports/20170...north-carolina

The team added a couple of walk-ons, presumably to have enough guys to practice effectively.
