St Edward vs St Ignatius

Cats vs Eagles.

Ignatius has to win the game to make the playoffs. The Wildcats had a nice win against St X.

Eds is coming off a very impressive win against Moeller.

The Big Green Machine is the heavy favorite. Ignatius needs to make this a shoot out to have a chance IMO.

Maybe Ed's can somehow bring Crawford back to return punts? That may be the Cats' only chance.

Crawford more than made up for those junior year punt return drops in last year's game. Kid is a special talent.

You have to go back all the way to the 2008 season to find a home team victory in this series.

Can't wait for The Game! Best of luck to both teams and the seniors who will possibly be playing in their last rivalry game. IMO this game will be a battle all the way to the last possession.

Ticket sales will be brisk this week, should be an interesting game. Iggy is playing great football on the offensive side of the ball. Hopefully the Eds D can limit their trips to the end zone.

Has anyone figured out what Ignatius' playoff status would be if a 10th game had been able to be held with an Ignatius victory?

I think against a bad team it actually would have been negative, at best a wash when comparing higher divisor vs. more L1 and maybe some L2's (maybe)

If Ignatius can keep the game close and not get worn down like most Eagle opponents have in the 2nd half, then this could be an interesting and pick-em game. However, I do not see Ignatius staying with them for all 4 quarters. Their defense is simply too weak. They will bring a great effort and I expect that, but their season ends on the 31st... Eagles win 49-24.

This game always scares me a lot. There have been lots of games in the past where St. Ed's has been a more talented team heavily favored to win and then ended up losing. I would also think that after last year's 41-10 Shaun Crawford show, the Cats are going to have some revenge on their minds all week.

Add in that a playoff spot is on the line and the rivalry aspect and its going to be a showdown on Saturday afternoon.

Good point. There were years when Ignatius was very good and the Eagles made it a tough game. Talent ultimately wins out. Both teams will bring it.

The simple answer is Tony Butler. Obviously the Eagles top cover corner and a coveted D1 prospect, but a guy who has really lived up to the billing with his play on the field this year. Rarely have offenses gone at him this year, and when they do, Tony has won most of the matchups.

But the Wildcats present a unique challenge as they bring two high caliber receivers to the table. I don't know that Butler will be tasked with shadowing Cook when a guy like Grbac is just as capable of taking the top off a defense. If anyone has noticed, Carl Jones has been playing quite a bit of corner lately in addition to his receiver role to matchup with taller receivers. Mel Jackson is a very capable corner, but gives up some size. So it's quite possible we see Jones on the taller Grbac and Butler on Cook. I imagine we see both Cook and Grbac moving around quite bit to try and get some matchups against safeties and LB's in the slot.

Pressure always helps secondary coverage and overall play. Grosel is a very good athlete and extends plays with his legs. When the Eagles have struggled in the secondary this year (like in Q1 against Moeller) its when the QB scrambles to extend plays... tough for a DB to cover a receiver for 4 + seconds and keep an eye on a QB that might advance past the line of scrimmage.

Lombardo has shown a liberal attitude to blitz indiscriminately this year... it cost them once or twice against Moeller. IMO, O'Malley and Reynolds will need to play exceptional to control the prolific St. Ignatius offense this Saturday.

Go Eagles!

No way SI will slow down SE's offense. Gest could have the biggest game of his career. 42-14 Eds

I hope I'm wrong. I'd like to see SI in the playoffs.

Tickets go on sale 9am Monday at St. Edward, and I expect them to disappear very fast.

I think the 2pm kickoff is a smart idea due to Halloween.
I'm sure the Lakewood Police also appreciate the game time...they will have quite a day.

I'm curious...when was the last time (if ever) that tickets were available at the gate for a Holy War game?

2002 -
The Eagles were 7-0 and the Wildcats 5-2, also in need of a win to make the playoffs

Hats off to the Eagles. You are clearly and uneqivocally the best high school football team I have seen this year. GCL-S champs to boot. GBM (next year of course)

The biggest problem is the game doesn't matter to St. Ed's (outside of pride and playing against your rival) as much as it does to Ignatius. They need the win for the playoffs, they've got the chip on their shoulder from having a rough year for them. Even with a loss, I think St. Ed's is the top seed in region one.

Just sets up as a situation where the Eagles get blitzed early on, taken out of their comfort zone (running the football) and being frustrated the whole game offensively. Now I don't think its anywhere near a given that something like that is going to happen but its possible. Someone listed the 2002 game, I remember that well, Carney and company could not move the the football all game and the Wildcats just made the most of their opportunities as they won 25-2.

This version of the Big Green Machine has more big play capability than that one which creates match-up issues but Kyle always had a knack for taking away certain options on offense, at least until last year's 41-10 game.

I was at the 2002 game. After JJ Boone had the safety on Van Der Oord it was all downhill from there.
